Pour is a darker copper toned amber with a tight creamy off white head. The nose has a very webby funk to it with a yeasty spice presence up front. Tons of candied sugars dominate the bulk of the nose with some faint sour cherries in back with a touch of booze. The taste is very sweet, dusty up front but light, overly sweet candied sugar and caramel. faintly sour cherries in the back. lighter creamy body with a grentler carbonation and bit juicy with a faint driness. (471 characters)

Appearance - Deep hazy orange. No head.

Smell - Kinda funky. Orange. Dry grass. A little lemony acidity.

Taste - Much more sour than I thought. Lemon. A bit of vinegar. Woody. Some deep brown sugar. A bit of oxidation.

Mouthfeel - Medium body. Medium carbonation.

Overall - I thought this would be terrible, but it's pretty good. Very sour. (384 characters)

Thanks to largadeer for sharing. Deep golden with a frothy white head. Aroma is musty, with notes of dark fruit, oak, candied sweetness, and mushroom. The nose displays moderate acetic notes and caramel. The flavor has a moderate candied sweetness accompanying traditional wild notes like earthiness, mustiness, and some wet leather. Citrus is evident, and there are lesser notes of dark fruits and a light acetic character. Lightly tart and moderately sour with oak and tannins in the finish. An interesting and enjoyable beer. (538 characters)

Thanks to Jeff (ipa247) for this one. Poured from a 750ml corked and caged bottle into a Captain Lawrence snifter. Shared with schen9303.

A: Standard pour yields a .5 finger powdery white head with good retention. Beer is a cloudy orange-bronze. Lacing is stringy and thick with nice legs but no cling.

S: Nose is unlike anything I've ever smelt before. Brett, caramel, slight tartness, and candied brown sugar. Also a baked yam richness. Funk is noticeably present but covered by an odd deep sweetness.

T: Opens sweet spice. Coriander, clove, and cane sugar. Tartness comes on a bit towards the middle along with cobwebs and Brett. Some peach and brown sugar graininess. End is sweet tea mixed with tartness and caramel. Finish is drying with a spicy aftertaste.

S: Light to medium bodied with low carbonation. Silky and oily in the mouth with a slight dryness. Goes down with some slightly rough edges and a nice crispness. Finish is dry with a sticky aftertaste.

D: Having a faro for the first time, it's a bit of a combination between the traditional sour lambic style and the Lindeman's fruit beers loaded with sugar. That being said, this is pretty enjoyable. Not overly sweet and with a light tart character. Worth trying if you get the chance. (1,256 characters)

The #1 Faro shared by me at a recent tasting. I love Drie Fonteinen a lot. This beer...not my favorite from them.

Beer is amber and mostly clear with a lazy head, moderate to low carbonation and no lacing.

The aroma is mildly acetic but sweet with malt at the same time.

It is sour but not overly so, kind of sugary sweet / malty at the same time. A bigger body than expected, a decent beer but not my favorite. I'd have it again but I doubt I'd buy it again. (462 characters)

This is not a Faro. Belgian candy sugar was added to the beer before fermentation.

Turbid amber hue, khaki head.

Earthy Brett, caramelized malt sugar, acidity and a vibrant green/crab apple aroma.

Tastes very similar to sour crab apples. Some malty sweetness and tea. A little heavier than your normal lambic, probably due to the different malted barleys that were used. It makes me think these could be bottle bombs in a few years if there is a good amount of residual sugar left for the wild yeast to eat up. (513 characters)

Pour hazy orange with a flimsy white head.

Lactic sour and more than enough funk.. but some brown sugar essence really seems to me to be the defining quality.. the sugars pull the yeasty elements out swinging.. musty brett.. and decaying compost combines with too much sweetness... plenty of sugars leftover and even a bit of vanilla.

Caramel or brown sugar sweetness makes me think "Faro", but what do I know? The sugars seem too heavy for the dank hay and moderate funky cheese... there is some sorta spiciness that screams clove, but it easily gets lost in the other flavors.. a bit of acetone and acetic acid prime the EtOH with warmth.. Really interesting and really odd.. seems sweet/funky and obviously alcoholic... but the sweetnes seems to dial in the funk and never lets it escape the way I was hoping it would.

Thanks Eric... wow... odd and complex.... I want a bottle or two to forget about for about 10 years... otherwise, I think this will be a chintzy review.

750ml corked and caged bottle, Jan 2008 bottling.

Copper colored, hazy at first and then muddy toward the end of the bottle. It's very well carbonated, though only a small head forms.

The nose is fruity, funky, mildly sweet. The combination of musty oak and caramel is unusual. Dark berry tartness and balsamic vinegar comes through strongly as it warms.

Very different from the aroma, it's quite sour and dry on the tongue. Though there's a solid malt backbone, it doesn't lend any sweetness. Fruity, tannic and vinous with more acetic acid than I would expect from a 3 Fonteinen beer, it reminds me a lot of the first bottled batch of Consecration. Sourness is moderate, and the finish is quite dry. An interesting experimental beer, it seems to be more of an American sour than a strong lambic. (800 characters)

Thanks to Chris for sharing this one. It sounds interesting if nothing else.

A: The pour is quite dark, an amber sort of color with a fair amount of brown notes. The head is rather large and off-white in color.

S: The nose is only mildly funky, for a Drie Fonteinen beer, anyway. A very slight hint of their usual sweaty sock aroma along with some grass and earth. Quite a bit of sweet candi sugar like aroma, which I was not expecting at all. And there are lots of fruit notes to this beer as well.

T: A fairly aggressive grassy quality comes through on the palate, as well as some straw. The tartness is there, but only a slight lactic/lemon character to the beer overall. Again, the fruity sweetness shows itself, but it provides a very interesting contrast.

M: The body is medium, perhaps what you might expect for a "lambic". The carbonation is soft, but present enough.

D: If nothing else, an interesting experiment in fermentation. I would be interested to see how this beer develops over time. (1,006 characters)

Thanks to MaxxDaddy on RB for bringing this bottle to Campground Brewdown. Yet another Drie Fonteinen off the list.

A - Pours murky brown with a small one finger tall off-white head leaving very small trails of lace down parts of the glass.

S - Smells of very light funk, dark candied sugar, dark fruits, oak, caramel and a light mineral quality. This one isn't as funky as I was expecting.

T - Starts off with some sweet caramel malt and plenty of dark candied sugar that never really go away. Hints of dark fruits, oak, light musty funk and some minerals help to break up the sweetness. Finish is pretty dry, lingering on the palate long after the finish.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation. Kinda sweet with some lingering dryness.

O - I enjoyed this one for what it is. It definitely sports some interesting flavors but it really isn't my style. Fun to try but I wouldn't actively seek it out. (909 characters)

a - Pours a murky amber color with one finger of white head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells sugar, apples, some definite brett, and some dark fruits, raisins and figs. Definitely a bit sweet, but enjoyable.

t - Tastes of apples, brett, oak, sweet fruit, orange, sugar, and dark fruits. Again sweet, but not too much.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

o - An enjoyable beer from Drie Fonteinen, though not my favorite. It's a bit sweet from the sugar added to it, but nice if you split a bottle with a few people. Something I would be itnerested in having again for sure. (730 characters)

The beer is dark yellow and slightly hazy, with a small head that leaves virtually no lacing behind. The aroma brings sugar, with a mild funk. Personally, I would never choose a faro over a gueuze, as I much prefer sour to sweet when it comes to beer. That being said, this is the best faro I have yet had, though my experience in this genre is quite limited. The beer is lightly sweet, and still brings a helping of funk, albeit muted by the sugary presence. A decent beer and a fun experience, I would have this again. (560 characters)

Pours a moderate golden-yellow color with a good white head and some mild lacing as it goes down. The nose contains a good amount of breadiness as well as some yeast and spice. Light sugary character along with a moderate amount of Brett funk. Its profile is pretty similar to 3F Oude Gueuze, but a bit subdued. Flavor is nice with a bit of apple and barnyard funk. There's is a touch more sweetness than a normal wild, though it's really more noticeable in the mouthfeel, where a mild sugary sweetness coats my palate. Good carbonation. Overall, quite a solid effort and something I thoroughly enjoyed. (700 characters)

A soft pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip produces a two-finger thick, lightly amber-tinged, tan colored head. The beer is a dark amber color that shows a hazed (despite sitting in the fridge for a month or two), plum, light amber with gold highlighted hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells tart and fruity up front and really reminds me of plums with a caramelized apple backdrop to it. There is a certain mustiness to it as well as some damp, barnyard aged, musky cloth blanket notes, perhaps a touch of phenolics / acetone and a certain spiciness that I can't quite tell if it comes from acetic acid or not. I poured some for my wife in a 25cl tulip glass and a note of overly-ripe cheese and perhaps a touch of rotting fruit aromatics even, or is that a rotting vegetable like note (baby puke even :-).

Dry tasting up front, but quite carbonated, though it doesn't get very fizzy as the body of this brew is quite thick (at least if you were expecting something Lambic like in texture). Woody oak notes and a touch of spiciness show the barrel influence. This is actually quite dry; there is not much of any residual sugar as all the Candi-sugar has been fermented out completely. The darker malts used (the label mentions Munich malt and amber malt) add some nice malt character to the finish; it is subtle underneath the more dominant Lambic-like character, but provides finishing touches of biscuit-like malt, a touch of toasty whole grain character as well as a chewy brown bread crumb (crumb being the part of the bread inside the crust and not crumbled dried bread) notes. Nicely tart tasting, but it is not nearly as bracingly tart as one would expect from a regular strength Lambic (extra alcohol does tend to inhibit lactic acid production) and the acidity couples with some phenolic notes to produce some light spiciness in the finish that intermingles with the spicy oak notes. A touch of vanillin character is contributed by the oak aging and maybe even a hint of coconut. I do like the texture of this beer, the ample, but not over-whelming carbonation mixes quite well with the medium texture that has a certain creaminess to it. Perhaps a hint of sweetness comes through as this warms up, but really it comes through as a boost to the fruitiness rather than as an actual sweetness; notes of plum, fragrant apples (like Macintosh) and perhaps a hint of caramelized melon are just barely noticeable.

This is not over-carbonated yet, and I don't really see this being a future problem for this beer; there is very little residual sugar left here and I would guess that this will age gracefully well past the January 2012 best by date. This is a nice alternative to a lighter Lambic / Gueuze, definitely a bit more appropriate for the winter time, though this is certainly not heavy, but I am not sure that I would ever choose this over a more traditional Lambic. Worthwhile as an experiment, but I can't see myself stocking up on this particular batch; with the variation between batches and given this is a first time thing, if future batches took a different turn than this has it might be worth picking up those; I wouldn't mind if there was more lactic acidity and perhaps even more character from the darker malt or even the candi-sugar. (3,354 characters)

Bottle (4 years old): Poured a murky deep amber color faro with a small bubbly head with minimal retention. Aroma consists of funky yeast ester and some barnyard notes. Taste is a mix between some candi sugar notes mix in with some funky notes with loads of barnyard and wet leather notes with some tart notes at the end. Body is quite full for style with limited carbonation which again is to be expected. Funkier then expected with less residual sugar then I had anticipated. (477 characters)

750ml bottle into a tasting glass. It poured dark orange in color with a thin white head clinging to the edge of the glass.

The aroma has a mix of funky,sour notes and sweeter, sugary flavors. More tart and funky but with a little acidicness. Pretty good balance between sour and sweet.

The taste shows more of the tart, funky and sour characteristics up front. The sweeter, candi sugar, malt flavors come out more in the finish. I get some musty, basement like qualities to it in the finish as well.

The mouthfeel is a bit heavier then I expected but medium bodied overall with carbonation being high. Overall it had some good sour and sweet characteristics to it and was a pretty tasty beer overall. I don't think I'd choose this one over any other Drie Fonteinen's Lambics or Gueuzes though. (800 characters)

From a 75cl bottle into a mini-flute.

APPEARANCE: Pours a small white head that vanishes almost immediately. Looks still pretty quickly. Hazy burnt orange with medium levels of carbonation evident. No wisp or ring remain and no lacing. Looks pretty flat by the end, which is disappointing.

SMELL: Hay and some funky notes in there, with green apples and other green fruits. A nice toffee hint comes though as well, which adds a very nice touch. Nice nose.

TASTE: Sour green apples and lemon notes up front, with some nice candy sugar and toffee sweetness coming through after the swallow, offering some very nice balance to the taste profile. Hints of oak come through as well, along with touches of floral bitterness after the swallow. Bold aftertaste of sour apples, sweet sugary toffee and a touch of bitterness lingering nicely on the palate. Very flavorful and balanced for sure.

PALATE: Light on the palate and medium-high levels of carbonation. Creamy and vibrant on the palate, goes down fine and finishes quite dry.

OVERALL: Next to Hommage, this was probably the beer I enjoyed the most. The sweet tones from the sugar accompanied the sourness extremely well, and I really appreciated the light bitterness at the finish. This is one I’d gladly stock up on for future consumption. Really enjoyed this, and found it extremely approachable for a sour rookie. Good choice on this one guys. Thanks again! (1,503 characters)

A: . Pours a murky, deep orange (bordering on brown) body with a small white head. Nice.

S : Aroma is subtle and complex: candy sugar, brett notes, barnyard funk, dried fruits, almonds and some nutty, woody notes.

T : Taste is matching: smooth brett tones, sweet malts, candy sugar, hay, yellow apples , wood and baker’s yeast.

O : The added candy sugar makes this a sort of crossbreed between a Belgian ale and a classic lambic. Which I do like. A really, really nice brew and a truly original lambic. (559 characters)

Bottle courtesy of mothman. Poured into a tulip glass a slightly hazed orange amber color with pretty much zero head, almost looks like a heavy herbed tea. The aroma is sour and tart, cherry and fruit with some earthy funky notes as well. The taste has notes of fruit, grape, some barnyard, and light toasted malt. The tartness is fairly strong upfront with a nice semi malty background. Lots of lemon zest as well. Light mouthfeel with very little carbonation. (461 characters)

Appearance: Nice off-white head, pour is a dark brown-mahogany-amber that grows increasingly cloudy as I descend through the bottle.

Smell: Plum, dates, caramelized apples and other fruits with a light sourness and enjoyable barnyard / horse blanket mustiness. A bit of brown sugar and balsamic vinegar as well.

Taste: Plums, dates, apples, figs with some nice horse blanket barnyard mustiness with a hint of oak. Not that sour or tart. Extra points for being an unblended lambic; reminds me a bit of consecration.

Mouthfeel: Dry, perhaps a bit over-aggressive carbonation that sticks around

Drinkability: Lower sourness makes this one perhaps not one of my favorites, but it disappears very quickly because of it. Was best when it hit room temperature. (757 characters)

Sigh. I guess I'm not going to Jackie O's after all. Bottled 25th Jan 2008, consumed 02 Dec 2010.

A clear copper with a dense, off-white head that recedes to a thin disk, leaving some lace. Plenty of carbonation is visible. The nose is completely unconventional, especially for Drie Fonteinen. Tart, vinegar is present, along with some moderate fruitiness, bringing to mind strawberries and black cherries. Vanilla is present, along with quite a bit of oak. Mildly cidery and grassy, there isn't much funk. In some ways, this is a cross between Rodenbach and Le Terroir (minus the dry hops).

The palate opens with quite a bright acetic character, tart, juicy and refreshing. Again, I get some fruity, berry character, and there's a very prominent tannin character, especially on the finish which lends a moderate bitterness. That wet wood character is signature Drie Fonteinen, but the acetic character isn't. A touch of sweetness is present as well. The lack of funk is rather disappointing, but approached as a Americanized-Flanders Red, this is a lot better. Drying on the finish with some alcohol, the sweetness is noticeable as well. Carbonation is soft and supple, this feels spectacular on the palate. I really like this, but I was hoping for more. Unlike your typical gueuze, the acidity does hamper drinkability just a hair. Complexity is high, but ultimately, this could be better.

**Edit: An hour later, once my nose has gotten a chance to get used to the moderate acetic character, I do get a lot more funk. To my palate, the delicacy of a cheesy funk is easily overcome from the brightness that acetic acid brings. Adding the yeast does increase the funkiness of this brew (1,689 characters)

The beer pours an orange-amber color with a white head. The aroma is heavy on the lemons, apples and caramel malt. There is a good bit of tartness to the aroma and a little bit of funk.

The flavor is similar, but a little bitter in my opinion. I get light to medium farmhouse funk. as well as some sour apples and lemons. There is also a little bit sugar mixed in, but the beer is still a lot more sour than the other Faros that I have tried.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very good beer. Drie Fonteinen never disappoints. (610 characters)

Opened on 12.31.2010 to usher in 2011. Opens with a pop.

Brick red with a barely off-white, pinkish head. One and a half finger head.

Lots of vinegar and funk in the nose, but there's a light malty sweetness as well. I pick up on underripe strawberries, lemons, vanilla, and lots of soft oak character. Taste is an interesting interplay between sweet, sour, and musty funk. The berry notes are reminiscent of dried lingonberries which combines with the wet woodiness and [a good amount of] cheese rind; finishes tannic, but with notes of sweet honey from the addition of sugar. Surprisingly malty and sweet, with notes of vanilla.

Lightly funky, lightly tart, with a nice sourness. A great beer. (699 characters)

Pours a cloudy orangish-amber color with a small off-white head that fades.

Funky aroma, almost fruity and cherryish, with big leather and oak.

Great flavor too. Mild sourness, and rather acetic. Oak, leather, earth, and barnyard funk.

Medium-bodied with low carbonation and average acidity.

Orange/amber body with a thick white foamy head. Big funky, sweaty, acidic, somewhat spicy aroma. Very sour beer.
