12.7oz. bottle -- dated December 10th, 2009 -- into a tulip glass

Pours a wheaty yellow-orange color. It's hazy, but not so much that you can't make out the carbonation streaming up to the head. And boy oh boy is there a lot of carbonation streaming here: it's like a swirling vortex. Greater than one finger of white foam -- on a very gentle pour -- with excellent retention. This is about as good-looking a gueuze as there can be.

The aroma is pretty complex, with its waves of varying fruit. Fresh-squeezed lemon is dominant here, of course. And not lemon juice, but lemon pulp. Tart but also fresh. There's some tart pear here too, and maybe a touch of pineapple. Banana was honestly the first fruit that I smelled when I reflexively smelled the cork, and that banana-flavored Runts aroma comes across in the nose in a minor way. Of course there's an astringent oak quality here. There's not as much funk as I was hoping for, but this gueuze certainly has its horseblanket going on. It's like smelling a lemon grove next to a used saddle and some old, decaying grass.

The taste follows the nose, but with more plasticky phenolic flavor. Like PVC and chlorine, this flavor. It subtracts from the intensity of the funk (which is lightly horseblankety on the palate). It plays nicely with the abundance of lemon and pear tart fruit flavors here, though. A touch of oak on the finish, along with a mineral/flint component not unlike that of many French white wines. It's complex yet light. And while I want it to be funkier, this is undeniably well-blended.

The mouthfeel is pretty soft, even with all of that visible carbonation. It smoothly delivers the waves of flavor here. Overall, this is a masterfully-blended bottle of gueuze. I still very much prefer Cantillon Classic Gueuze, but this is excellent.

The beer comes in a hazy reddish orange color with a large bubbled large white head.

The aroma immediately has this aggressive funky character of farmyard, some slight stinky sock, with lots of fruit character in dried apricot, lemon peel, white grape peel with a substantial white breadiness in there. With some salinity as well.

The flavor follows with that dried fruit apricot and peach. Tons of white wine character. A lemon tartness throughout with some funky quality of farmyard and hay. Tons of champagne like carbonation that goes throughout.

I had this blind against Tilquin and this clearly won for its zesty fruit qualities and complexity with this beer.

Wonderful Aroma coming off the top. Let the beer do its thing and then shortly after poured into a snifter. Tart cherries, barnyard, hay, and spicy yeast on the nose. Taste of spicy yeast and horse blanket. Nice dry finish that really leaves your palate unscathed.
