Reviewed from notes. Bottled on Jan. 5, 2012. Poured into a Tripel Karmeliet glass. The body was brassy gold and the head was white, leaving no lacing. The beer was pretty clear.

The smell was earthy and sweet with hints of pear. Bell pepper faintly and lots of Pixie Stix candy. Bright pleasant aroma.

The taste was very tart! Lemons and limes. Dry but not chalky. Light peppercorn flavor. Very interesting and delicious.

The mouthfeel was medium to light bodied with a fine carbonation. This one exceeded my expectations!

375 bottle poured into tulip glass, Bottle reads 2012, dec 5th.

This is my first 3 Fontienen and Gueze, it was excellent.

A: Pours a really nice deep golden coler with a bit of haze. There is a big white head that recedes quickly to a small lingering ring.

S: The Aroma of this beer is just awesome. Really big funkiness front and center. I'm not too refined to pick it apart too much but a tart funk that has a lot of citrus/fruity sweetness. I could smell this all day.

T: The flavor follows the aroma and expands on it. There is a great big tartness with the funk. The citrus type fruit flavors are more apparent, lemon and grapefruit, green apple flavor and tartness is there in the back of the drink. Some of the oak comes through.

M: This is a very dry, champagne like beer. Big carbonation and dryness really add to and intensify the tartness.

O: As my first true lambic/Gueuze this is incredible. The smells and flavors of this beer are big and tart but at the same time have a wonderful drinkability. There is a lot of flavors that round out the tartness and really make this a wonderful beer.

375ml bottle poured into a geuze glass.

A: Tawny in color though it shifts more to the golden side of things. Hazy, though some yeast may have accidentally been poured. No head at all and no lacing.

S: Tart lemon, sour green apple and green apple skin, lemongrass. Lightly funky and rustic with the traditional horse blanket smell. Undertones of caramel and dark honey. Mild dusty oak scent.

T: Cider vinegar. Puckering lemony acidity, tannic, green apple skin. Whispers of oak. Barnyard and horse blanket are more apparent than they were on the nose. Caramel and walnuts, dark honey. Well balanced. Sour finish of lemon juice, apple skin, and funk.

M: Medium to medium-light body. Full in the mouth and slick. Puckering, acidic, and tannic. Curiously flat though.

O: For whatever reason, this bottle was flat. I've had this beer many times and never found it to be like this. My score reflects the undesirable quality in this sample, but I'll say that this is easily one of my favorite sours under normal circumstances. Some of the other more highly rated geuzes out there are far more sharp and sour. This one showcases a perfect balance between funk, sour, and malt sweetness, with a touch of oak thrown in for good measure. Tannins are there, but play more softly on the palate than most do. A must-try beer.

Pours a hazy grapefruit orange color with a fair amount of egg shell head that faded fairly quickly. No legs and light lacing. Good thin collar. Aroma is very much like when I would march in my highschool homecoming parade and the floats were all covered in straw. I also pick up some lemon and grapefruit. The flavor provile is very citrusy tart up front, then some dry grass. Nice silty mouthfeel, very dry, and that tartness stings the tongue. Very glad I got to try this, but I wouldn't put it in my top 5, maybe not in the top 10.
