** Feb 2008 bottled on date, 375ml **

It's Christmas Eve in these parts, and so I naturally reached for two of my favorite edibles for a festive lunch alone: clam chowder (Whole Foods), a crusty grain baguette, and a geuze that has been patiently sitting in my cellar (read: garage) for a while.

Poured all at once into my Tripel Karmeliet big glass. A huge 4 finger head erupts, sporting large, rocky bubbles and sticks around for a long while, leaving lace. The geuze is an effervescent old gold and clear (having left the sediment in the bottle).

Heavens. This smells gobsmackingly, achingly tremendous. Armand has got inside my head and pulled out what I think is the most perfect, balanced geuze smell possible. Massive apple-cider sharpness, wonderful, disgustingly juicy funk, lemon-tart, hearty oak, pungent, hints of must and dust, acidic, warning, cleansing, vinegar, the famed "horse blanket" nose... it's all here, and it's all balanced. There are sharper, more pungent and more strident geuze noses out there. There are none that work so well.

Flavor is again a masterwork of complimentary classic flavors that are actually blended. The art of geuze is really the art of blending, and this Drie Fonteinen is supremely balanced. Dancing flavors of lemon and tart Brett-funk skip across the palate, hand in hand. Wild yeast funk and a grin-tugging, moderately aggressive acidity dash at you and then peel off to the side, giggling. The oak dryness just stands there, stalwart. Nothing is out of place. This is a fun, joyful beer that never gets too bracing or tiresome.

The carbonation here is again, expert. Fizzy and full bubbles deliver the goods straight to your senses and the finish is clean and long, letting you down gently through fields of lemon trees and filthy horses. The acidity is perfect, by gum. This is why we drink wild ales.

I love this beer. I love how classy it all is, how well crafted it is put together. Moreover, I love that I can buy it 5 minutes away from my house. God bless Drie Fonteinen! May your funk live forever!

I am in funky bliss. Gueze and chowder may well turn into a minor tradition around my home. Merry Christmas.

One word: dirty.

Authentic, old-school dirty blond colored brew eminates a barnyard funk that mostly reminds me of an old dish rag or a bucket of water used 2 days ago to clean the floor of a kitchen. Uniquely subtle but not subdued. Mouth-watering, to say the least.

An earthier lambic than many, this gueuze has a special apples-rotting-on-the-pavement sort of tartness. A bit bitter through the finish, lemon makes a strong appearance here in all its forms -- mild lemon acidity and flavor early on and very slight citric and plant bitterness at the end. Either I'm getting better at plucking nuance out of a potent style, or this simply has a lot of unique, subtle characteristics. I'm guessing the latter.

A - Beautiful, crystal clear pale straw. Half an inch of head dissipates quickly with little lacing on the glass. Medium carbonation maintained throughout the pour.

S - Citrus (esp. lemon), soft leather, barn-yard funk, and just a bit of sulfur behind.

T - Sourness first, followed by large citrus component with lemon foremost. Gorgeous funk rounded out with leathery and slightly tannic finish.

M - Light, crisp.

D - Absolutely flawless.

Overall - No better gueuze available in the US, IMHO. This is my birthday bottle, so I'm happy to say that I don't need to finish this by writing "I could drink a 750," as in fact I will drink a 750. Cheers!

A: Slightly hazy yellow, head quickly fades
S: Sour, apple, oak, funky
T: Tart, less apple than I expected, with some interesting fruits in the finish (I get apricot and white grape), low on the oak but really balanced. Seriously, this is a perfectly balanced beer.
F: Small bubbles, light body

Overall: For a special occasion, this beer is very rewarding. I'd drink this every day with lunch if I were a rich man!

Poured from a 11/18/10 375ml bottle into a Warsteiner flute glass.

A - Gold with quite a bit of head that settled into some lasting lacing. Nothing wrong here.

S - Sour, citrus fruits, acidic. A little bit of grape. Not overly strong.

T - Very sour with some bitter aftertastes. Hints of fruit, especially lemons and apricots. Very acidic. This is a very nice geuze.

M - Very carbonated and acidic, but the taste doesn't linger. Mild lemon rind aftertaste.

This is an excellent beer. I love sours and this is one of the better ones I've had. Thanks again to Douglasjamjak for this awesome extra!

Poured from a corked & caged bottle into a Victory tulip. Bottled on December 12, 2009.

A- pours a very hazy shade of orange with a one finger white head. Looks like...a gueuze.

S- tons of barnyard funk and horse blanket. Love it.

T- the sourness is almost numbing. It's not the tartness you mainly get from wild ales, but it's totally puckering. Just a complete barnyard, musty flavor. Absolutely phenomenal.

M- medium bodied. About what I expected

O- wow, this is fantastic stuff. Aged or not, this is fantastic

Bottled 11/18/2010 and poured into a wine glass.

A: Cork pops before removing the cage (and almost hit me in the face), champagne like carbonation leads to a thick two fingers off white head that lingers as a thick film. Color yellow orange with a nice haze.

S: Smells of oak, champagne-like, funky and sour.

T: Astringent, band-aid, nice sourness that balances the funk nicely, more oak and a wine like sweetness.

M: Medium body and has lost some carbonation but is still prickly.

O: Quite a delicious geuze, one of the best I have had.

12.7 oz bottle, bottling date of 30 nov 2006.

A: Mildly cloudy amber-orange color, with a frothy whitish head that leaves a nice thin layer of bubbles and some splotchy lace.
S: Obviously has a strong sour, funky, dirty smell but also has a very potent slightly sweet, tart grapefruit like smell that provides nice balance to the funkiness.
T: I was just eating some nice, tart winesap apples this afternoon so my first drink of course reminds me of them. Immediately there is a sour apple/grapefruit flavor, but then in the body some more sweetness comes through before finishing very funky and earthy. Nice complex range of flavors and interesting balance of tart, sour and sweet flavors throughout.
M: Amazingly crisp and light in the mouth, with a very high level of carbonation. Despite sour and tartness this very smooth and refreshing.
D: Amazing gueze, I love drinking this, however, there is so much sourness and tart that lingers in the finish and complexity in the body that this is something best enjoyed slowly and on special occasions.

Cloudy orange-golden, low head, fizzy, going fast and having a low retention. The label says "open carefully", and you should do so or you might lose an eye.
Smells great, a big tartness, with citrus, green grapes, sour cherries. Lots of funky hay, barnyard and herbal notes. It really sets the stage for the taste.
And it delivers. Beautiful complex taste:sourness, strong lemon at first, like sugar-free lozenges, then a nice fruity tartness, with cherries and berries, vinegary, acidic green apple throughout, finished with very dry white wine/champagne. Lots of green notes, fresh cut grass, wet hay, mixed with oaky woodiness, "old barrel" scented. Earthy yeasts. Dry in the finish from the mentioned sourness and green grapes, but also with a nice hop presence, bringing in also some pineapple notes (really great) and a mild bitterness.
Personally i found this one too fizzy, maybe a tad lower carbonation would have been less... burpier.
A perfect rough gueuze, (almost) immaculate 5.

A: Pours a murky amber color with a frothy bone white head. Nice lacing and appears to be well carbonated. Significantly less attractive than Tilquin if I'm going to create a comparison. Nothing here gets my motor running. Dirty pond water thing going on.

S: Then I smell the beer. Big oak nose with bright accents of freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Motza bread. Musty. Floral notes of C Howard's violet chewing gum. Powdery and floral. The amount of oak and freshly ground black pepper that emerges as this beer warms is amazing. I've never smelled anything quite like it. I can't keep my nose out of the glass.

T: Broad flavor profile ranging from moderately acidic vinegar, to citrus notes of sweet grapefruit and tart lemon juice, followed by earthy notes of walnut and woody oak noted. By far the most complex geueze I've had as it ranges across so many different flavors. Absolutely delightful.

F: Well carbonated and relatively thin.

O: What can I say? I wish this bottle never ended. So much depth of flavor and nose going on.

Served in a tulip glass. Poured a little faster than I should have. Relatively fresh.

A: Opaque light copper, almost peach color. About a finger of head that very quickly retreats to no film on top, a bit around the rim.

S: Strong sour smell right up front. This is the smell I expect from a top-notch sour/lambic. Yeasty and musty.

T: Sour and tart. No sweetness at all. Medium oak presence. Yeast is present as tartness fades. A little bitter on end.

M: Not jaw-clenching, but getting close. Thin with medium carbonation.

O: THE classic sour beer. This is definately a starting off point for someone who wants to try what a sour should be. I enjoy this beer frequently.

What a presantation for a Geuze. Great and quiet longlasting foam and a beaufull goldenbrown colour. Smell is lots of Brett and beautifully soured. Full of oak and esters make it very complex. Taste is in the beginning litle sour but as soon as my mouth was accepted to that it was a wonderfull and harmonic taste giving you lots of almost everything you want in a beer. Lots of oak and still fresh by the sour and flowery style, nothing of maltcaracter noticeble. Aftertaste is mixture of oak and sournes but fine and begging for another sip. Great beer!

Don't know if I put this revieuw right since the one I sampled had only 5% alcohol. Botlingdate 12-02-2003

2002 vintage consumed in March 06.

Beginning with a rather burning odor of gasoline or wood alcohol, I was rather worried about my expensive purchase. I decided to give the beer some time, as I would a glass of fine wine. It worked. Whether it was the time, the air, or the warmth of the bar, ten minutes of resting in my glass turned this brew from ethanol to exquisite...that or my nose learned to enjoy the smell of gasoline, which could also be the case.

The aromas are completely overpowering. This beer is highly acidic, very citrusy (limes and lemons mostly), and smells strongly of a pig farm. Mango and pear might be in there too but who really cares. This is more about "nose feel" than odor and this beer brings my nose to life, dresses it in a tux, and tangos it onto stage for a performance of Stomp.

Appearance is yellow-peach, very flakey, with a thick foamy off white head. The carbonation is insane but declines to tolerable levels after a few minutes.

Taste is as wild as an Irish brannigan, sour as the sour candy craze of 1991, bitter like an old English librarian drinking quinine, and as pissed as that old monk on the St. Bernie Bottle.

Mouthfeel can be extrapolated from the rest of this review.

Drinkability goes without saying.

Update: 1997 vintage consumed at the brewery on 8-18-08. The bottle quite literally had a spider on the webbed cork when it came to the table. :) It was every bit as good as the newer vintages and then some. This one CAN handle age very well. Buttery with full lemon notes.

Hazy orange appearance, you just know its going to be sour when you take your fisrt smell. Very stinky, earthy smell aswell. This had a very loooooong flavour, covered every part of your tongue, tremendoudly sour, tart acidity, one of my favourite gueuzes, lemony, grassy, earthy, dry, if your a fan of gueuze you must seek this out!!!!!!!

Poured a gorgeous cloudy gold with three fingers of fluffy white head that grew higher as it sat. Quite nice. Scents of sour green apple, lemon juice, barnyard funk, white wine, lactic sour, hints of pear, very faint hints of bubblegum, touches of oak, slight yeasty funk, funk-notes become more assertive as the beer warms, and as it warms further a bit of honey comes through. Very nice, deep, complex, sour and appetizing with a range of scents. Flavor begins with a massive hit of sour, lemon juice, crab apple, a bit of funky musty flavors, some vinegar notes, some slight hits of lemon rind, quite acidic, a tiny hit of herbal bitterness and oak as the sip finishes, extremely dry finish. The beer showcases sourness over all else, the fruit on the nose is not all that present in the taste. It's certainly a very, very sour beer, well blended with an excellent character for those who love sours. Mouthfeel is light bodied with a moderate level of carbonation, a very drying finish and a puckering sourness. Refreshing, tart, and drying, making you want to take sip after sip. Overall this is an excellent geuze. It's a bit single note, not incredibly complex in it's flavor, but the flavor is good. A nice lively sour that puckers the mouth and works with the mouthfeel to make a wonderfully refreshing beer. Highly recommended.

As I untwisted the wire hood, the cork rocketed off leaving a trail of foam behind. Good thing I was wearing safety glasses. I proceeded to immediately decant it into a tulip glass. The dark straw-yellow beer was capped with a voluminous dollop of white foam, which quickly collapsed. The aroma is a wonderful blend of fresh tart apples, grass, fusty funk and a little barnyard.

Effervescence is key to understanding this beer. The beer dances across the palate on the nimbleness of its carbonation, depositing morsels of intricacy. The tartness of the green apple nicely melds with the sourness of a grassy, or maybe hay, component. Horse blanket speckles the flavor. The sourness lingers.

This is a wonderfully complex beer. It is layered, flavorful, refreshing , balanced and very drinkable.

I split a 750 of this with my buddy.

This one was poured into snifters. It was a deep semi cloudy orange copper with a small white head.

Nose is full of all the greats. Funk Funk Funk and more Funk along with some vinegar and a decent amount of tartness. Also a fair bit of barn and some cheese.

Taste on this one is not as sour as some of my favorites, yet it is just as awesome. Musty attic wood, barnyard, hay, sweet and sour sauce with a little citrus fruits, mainly oranges and a little lemons.

This is one for the records. A super awesome beer. One of the most complex and balanced Gueuze I've ever had.

750ml bottle: I've got a real relic here. It is Oude Geuze 1999. The best by date on it is 31-12-2010, and the ABV is 6.5%. I traded for this maybe 6 years ago, and it has been hiding in the back of the fridge since then. It opened with a strong "pop". It pours an orangish-amber color. There was a small head on it, but it dropped away rather quickly. What an aroma. I really don't know where to start on this one. Bunches of sour fruits, and definitely a bit funky. There is some sourness in the aroma. The taste is superb. All kinds of sour fruits in here, that have blended together over the years. A bit of spiciness also, with some earthiness in the background. Kind of hard to explain, but there is a fullness as well as a lightness to the body at the same time. What a nice treat for the new year!

A good friend of mine went on vacation in Belgium, and had this one shipped back for us to try together. I was really fortunate to get to try this one...thanks, Robb!

Appearance: Pours with a huge 3" head of pillowy fluffy bubbles. There is lots of action with bubbles rising galore. The beer itself is an orangish golden color that is clear, but really active and almost makes it look cloudy.

Aroma: How do I describe this? It has a really dry and earthy aroma with some noticeable tartness to it. There is a little bit of wheat noticeable in this beer as you can pick up a real dry and bready aroma. There is also a host of fruit flavors in here also, and it is hard to pick them out individually. I can get Lemons, Oranges, Peaches, Pears, and Red Apples in particular. The aroma gets more citrusy as it warms up some. As it warms even further, there is a noticeable woody character coming out.

Taste: The flavor is just as complex as the aroma. It is really dry and clean overall. It is well attenuated and has a noticeable wheaty presence. There is a whole bunch of fruit flavors in this beer that definitely goes along with the aroma. I can really pick out the Red Apples as it warms. As it warms even further to room temperature, the acidity of the beer becomes noticeable and it leaves a dry and squeaky clean impression on you.

Opinion: I am really enjoying this beer. It is really clean and absolutely refreshing. There is an amazing depth of flavor to this beer, and it just gets deeper as the beer warms up. As I was drinking it, I was comparing it to Cuvee Renee in my mind, but this isn't a good comparison. The Lindemans is quite a bit sweeter like most of their beers, and this one has a bit drier and refreshing palate. You could drink this beer like a lawnmower beer if it weren't for the high carbonation. I would definitely drink this beer again any chance I got!

First review!

A) Poured into a snifter. Poured an excellent hazy, golden straw. Provided a very fizzy head that disipated rather quickly.

S) Very pugnacious with slight funkiness to it. Smelled heavily of sharp fruits, very strongly of apple and lemon.

T) Deeply sour, and rather funky. Funkiness becomes balanced in with the fruit. Tastes strongly of apple, lemon, cherries, strawberry. Extraordinarily balanced and very delicious.

M) Incredibly dry. Finishes clean and leaves the palatte almost imediately.

O) One hell of a beer. Very enjoyable and tart, and ultimately a highly recommended beer for anyone a fan of sours.

Gets more complex as it warms in the glass. Light mouthfeel with effervescent carbonation. Overall, an extremely well crafted geuze.

The beer comes in a hazy amber orange color with a large bubbled large white head.

The aroma immediately has this aggressive funky character of farmyard, some slight stinky sock, with lots of fruit character in dried apricot, lemon peel, white grape peel with a substantial white breadiness in there. Some sesame seed.

The flavor follows with that dried fruit apricot and peach. Tons of juicy white grape character. A lemon tartness throughout with some funky quality of farmyard and hay. Tons of champagne like carbonation that goes throughout. There is also a lingering sesame seed flavor.

In my experience, it goes Cantillon, Hanssens, this, and then Tilquin.

2004 Vintage

Pours very still, with the tiniest skim of carbonation gracing the surface. Nose is a ton of tropical fruit - pineapple, passion fruit, plum, almost like red Kool-Aid. Verrry mild barnyard aroma, considering the age of this one. Taste is sweet, then sour, then a surprisingly dry, minty finish. Not much "funk" to be found in the taste either. Lots of lemon and other sweet/sour citrus flavors, though. These combine with a very moderate level of tannins (from the oak, I'm assuming) to dry out the palate in preparation for the next sip. Carbonation level is a bit higher than the appearance reveals; very Champagne-like, and quite refreshing.

I'm enjoying my second glass of this with Cypress Grove Pepper Chevre, which is a very nice pairing if you're so inclined.

A - Pours a hazy golden orange, with a medium white head.

S - Smells funky, barnyard, tart fruits, earth

T - Bitter mineral taste, tart lemon, green apple, a little sweetness sneaking in with the funk. Excellent.

O - An excellent geuze, although i prefer Cantillon classic.

Taste: In line with the smell. Light green apple notes, as well as some pear, followed by intense lactic sourness and funk. Very puckering and drying on the finish. About what one would expect from a classic gueuze such as this.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with prickly carbonation. Pretty good here. Overall, a great gueuze. Very sour, puckering and refreshing. Had this directly following a '04 Lou Pepe Gueuze, and definitely preferred this beer.
