Bottle dated Dec 12 2009

A - Pours medium gold. Fluffy off white head tops out at just over half inch and sticks around for a very long time. Lacing is surprisingly average. Lots of active carbonation present giving it a champagne like glimmer.

S - Young green apple and lemon on the front end. Kind of a spicy white pepper and oak show strong in the middle which works well for me. Finishes up with hints of horse stall, horseradish, and a touch of peach.

T - Very citrus laden in the flavor. Lemon mostly followed by pink grapefruit and apple. Also very earthy in the flavor. Oak, leather, hay come to mind. Light sweetness towards the end with some malt and yeast. Alcohol is not present in the slightest.

M - Lighter bodied with a very active carbonation level which works well for this particular beverage. Finish is dry and sour.

O - Been looking forward to trying this one for a while and it didn't disappoint. Seems like every aspect of this beer is near perfect. The folks at Fonteinen and convinced me to make the effort to seek out others in their line up. Highly recommended. (1,093 characters)

January 17th 2006 bottling.

A: A slightly hazy golden color with a ton of bubbles leading to a half finger of white head.

S: A nice sour/tart nose. Tons of lacto. Some overripe fruit thrown in there for good measure.

T: While not as tart as other examples of the style I have had I must say this is probably the best balanced example of the style I have had. The tartness was there but it was not overwhelming. I honestly wanted quite a bit more.

M: Just a joy in the mouth. Tons of carbonation.

D: Why can't I drink this every day? This is a jewel. I love the style and they are experts. I wanted to savor this but my glass just kept getting empty. I know it is a low ABV beer but god damn. I would kill you for a never ending keg of this at my house. (757 characters)

375 ml. bottle into a tulip. Nov. 18th, 2010 bottling.

A: Beautiful glowing orange with some yellow highlights. Carbonation is full and lively, pure white head. Has a bit of cloudiness.

S: Mind blown for sure here. Starts with some grassy, hay and earthy aromas that lead to a huge funk. Very citrusy and clean with a dosage of sweaty sock and barnyard. Almost smells like my old treated baseball glove. Leathery with some dirt and grass, a bit grainy. Outstanding.

T: Very drinkable, tartness builds gradually into a sweetness and the funk kind of rides in the sinuses. Hay, lemongrass, wheat, small touch of cherries and grape. Definitely a lot going on here. Enjoyable because it's more towards the citrus side and not the acidic vinegar side. Light and refreshing.

M: Crisp and tart, touch of sweetness on the back end. Fills the palate with a rush of carbonation that dissipates into a lovely, coating beer that lingers quite long. Pulls at the gums and teeth a bit, but who wasn't expecting that?

O: Absolutely impressed with this beer. Outstanding from start to finish. Glad I got to try it and will definitely grab more if possible. (1,146 characters)

A: Poured into a wine glass. Looks like apple juice with a head that dissipated quickly.
S: Can't pull a real smell out of it but smells like sourness.
T & M: Sour that fades into grapes. But not sweet grapes. Kind of tart wild grapes that a grocery store wouldn't sell. Reminds me of my great grandma's homemade white wine in taste and feel.
D: As said above, it reminds me of the homemade wine I grew up sneaking. I could drink this forever. (446 characters)

Acidic/funky nose -- kind of cider-like. Wonderful mouthwatering sourness on the medium-light bodied palate. This has classic gueze character, and is impeccably balanced between the sourness and spice. Medium-long finish of moderate intensity. Although I've had better bottles of this brew, this continues to be the best beer I've ever tasted -- when this is hitting on all cylinders it's a 99-100 pt. beer. This is the *real* "champagne of beers!"

2012 Vintage (bottled March 2012) poured into 3F tumbler. Part of my cellaring experiment, held this at room temperature for a year and a half vs keeping it in one of my wine fridges.

Pours a strong golden orange with smaller off white head that settles to a pretty 2mm layer atop the beer. Pretty clear with just light haze.

Aroma is cheesy as heck. The cheesiest Oude Gueuze I've had and I'm wondering if it's due to the warmer cellaring. Plenty of barnyard musk, white grape, overripe lemon, and a touch buttery.

The palate showcases stronger lemon flavors, apple peel, wet hay, horse blanket, creamy young goat cheese, Chablis wine, tangy herbs, and a slight butterscotch. So unique, the last bottle I had of the same vintage was definitely more sour and astringent. That bottle I had purchased a year after at a bigger wine and liquor chain store.

Mouthfeel is light with ample carbonation but not quite as pushy as say a Goose Island sour (thank goodness). Always a gorgeous mouthfeel in Armand's beers.

Once again I'm extremely joyous to be drinking a Drie Fonteinen. And though this may have developed some off flavors due to the room temp aging, surprisingly they don't take away from the beer but add more cheesy funk which is quite welcome. It's the beauty of lambics, enjoying their longevity and the transformations that occur in it's duration. (1,363 characters)

Appearance - Large white frothy head over a bright, slightly hazy orange-amber beer. Plentiful carbonation is visible.

Smell - A woodsy, sour smell is detectable a foot from the glass. The aroma is very complex with a sweaty, dank cellar funk; wood; and a bitter-sour, almost grapefruit smell.

Mouthfeel and Taste: Tingley, ample carbonation and a medium body highlight the musty sourness. It is tart, but not sharp. The sourness is smooth with lemon rind flavours, chalk, and overripe fruit. It is quite vinous with a tannic, bitter sour grapefruit finish. (589 characters)

Drie Fonteinen: Oude Gueuze (Bottled: 2008) (Tasted 05/10/10)
12 oz. cork & cage bottle, poured into a flute.

Appearance: I must admit, I had to play a game while pouring this beer, a game called "how long will it take for the gigantic mushroom shaped head on this beer to burst." It was a fun game, it didn't burst, bottle poured, hazy golden amber beer with aforementioned puff, off-white head rising up and out of the glass, like a monument to the beer gods. Retention and formation puts many heavily hopped beers to shame.
Odor: As soon as the bottle popped open, the tart aroma of granny smith apple, sharp creamy cheese, waxy rind and phenols filled the area around my desk. Tremendous.
Consistency: Light body, intensely sour palate, literally teetering on the brink of being offensive. Intense carbonation scrubs the palate clean and lends a very lively feel to the beer.
Flavor: Apple cider & lemon juice, hints of fermented honey, subtle phenols, tangy overripe red fruit rolls into a dry, clean finish.

Of the gueuze I've tried, this is one of my favorites. Something about the intensity of the aroma and the distinct cheese-like notes sets this one apart for me. (1,176 characters)

375 mL bottle poured into a goblet. As soon as the cage was untwisted, the cork shot out of the top and hit the ceiling. Nice.

Appearance - Golden straw body with lively bubbles. Huge head that almost overflows my glass. The head is also lively and eventually dies down to a nice pillow of foam. Perfect look for a beer.

Smell - Tons of funk. Definitely more prevalent than the sour smells, which are hardly present. The tartness is more of an acidity that pierces through the funky hay smells.

Taste - Much like the aroma, the tartness is not on display. It's the funk. Great grassy and woody flavors intermingled with acidic sourness. The finish has a peppery oak finish that comes off as the slightest bit bitter.

Mouthfeel - A little heavy fresh, considering how effervescent the flavors are. Not really dry at all, which is what I expected. Strong carbonation, which does help alleviate the weight of the beer. With some age, this beer dries out, cutting much of the sweetness.

Overall - Complex and playful. I would drink this over nearly any gueuze out there. The more I drink it, the more I appreciate its quality. (1,127 characters)

A-Full on gold. Brilliantly clear. Very few bubbles and just a little ring around the top.

S-Funk. A bit of oak, but the rest if funk.

T-Full on funk. Sour but not overly sour. Some old oak. No hops.

M-Fairly dry. Not puckering. Nearly perfect

D-I love this beer. Could drink this everyday. (297 characters)

Poured from a bottle into my Cantillon flute glass

A: A great golden color with a really solid head that fades quickly and leaves virtually no lacing on the glass.

S: A nice funky smell right off the bat that really hangs around.

T: Wow this is fantastic. A good amount of sour and funk that really hits the tongue hard.

M: I absolutely love the carbonation on this beer. It is easy drinking for sure.

Overall: What a great beer. I've heard this beer talked up quite a bit and it did not disappoint. I was blown away by this beer and will have to track down more for sure. (577 characters)

First time I've seen this around. Bottle looks a bit more modern than the one pictured on the site with a big 3 on the side of the label and yellow fonts proclaiming Oude Geuze, blended lambic aged in oak.

Poured into a snifter it formes a fast rising eggshell head that eventually settles to a solid finger of creamy lathered goodness and never fades. A dull orange in color and fine carbonation. Really a treat to look at and very inviting.

Plenty of funky brett type qualities to this. How tart is too tart? well this pushes the limits of tartness but reaches what I think to be the perfect amount. This is in your face up front and gentle on the backside, finishe crisp and dry begging for another pull. Soft, aged dry wood in the smell and overshadowed a bit in the taste and ends up a nice compliment to the overall profile.

Notes: 2 years old and still has some time to go as it comes across a bit on the raw side. Not a knock at all as it was magnificent I just think it needs a few more years. Wish I could find this more often and lay a few down but I couldn't wait to try this. (1,099 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Kriek Belle-Vue tulip.

Appearance- Slightly hazy copper/orange color with a nice fluffy white head that dissipated quickly leaving a nice ring around the glass.

Smell- Lemon and lemon rind, young sour grape, vinegar, funky yeast, earth.

Taste- Nicely bitter and sour with lemon rind flavors. Yeasty. Bitter aftertaste.

Mouthfeel- A lot of small bubbles explode in my mouth. Lighter bodied carbonation. Very smooth on the way down.

Overall- Damn good gueze, but I like Tilquin better. (521 characters)

On an unusually cool July day, this is perfect. The scent is barnyard funky. Taste is tart and bright with an incredibly dry finish. I know that most think of this as an ideal summer beer, but for me it's the perfect Autumn drink. Highly recommended for a lazy Sunday wishing that football had already started. (311 characters)

Poured from the green 35cl bottle into a small flute glass. A bottling date of 22 January 2004 was clearly indicated on the lable. A soft orange hue with absolutley no carbonation to speak of - not one tiny bubble present and no pop from the cork. A super still appearance, no head; the look of orange champaign in the glass.

The aroma immediatley has that super sour gueuze "funk" that I've come to know and love. Yeasty and some citrus rind aromas. Slightly spicey with a peppery corriander.

The gueuze funk hits the palate with a bang upfront. Wow, very sour and yeasty all rolled into one. Some spicy notes hits the back of the tounge and the sourness does not quit throughout the beer. Dispite it appearance some detectable carbonation on the palate, but it's minimal. Very, very dry. This beer sucks all the moisure from your mouth and leaves you licking your gums just to keep things as they should be in there. Soft fruitty taste, not juicey, but rather like licking the rinds of oranges and lemons.

Light body, EXTREMELY dry, and very little carbonation to speak of.

Given the above, its easy to see how many would not like this style of beer. I, however, think its great. This one was spot on for a gueuze and the flavors were just what i was looking for. A super dry mouthfeel and puckering taste that was quite pleasing. I would have liked just a touch more carbonation, otherwise a very well done, albiet a little expensive beer. (1,454 characters)

12.7 oz bottle poured into a wine glass. Pours amber hued and very effervescent. The bone white head quickly fizzes away to a tiny ring. Aroma is signature 3F: musty, cellar like, damp, coal and slight funk. Very likeable!

Taste is lactic and lemony sourness with medium intensity and an exceptionally clean character. While it is definitely sour, the tartness doesn't linger too much and it drinks like a more balanced beer. Although the young age might have something to do with it. Very bubbly and very clean, I loved it!

Having had this (good) and some other (not as good) Gueuze, I am definitely editing (up) my rating of Lente, that is perhaps the best I have had till date.

The beer comes in a hazy amber orange color with a large bubbled large white head.

The aroma immediately has this aggressive funky character of farmyard, some slight stinky sock, with lots of fruit character in dried apricot, lemon peel, white grape peel with a substantial white breadiness in there. Some sesame seed.

The flavor follows with that dried fruit apricot and peach. Tons of juicy white grape character. A lemon tartness throughout with some funky quality of farmyard and hay. Tons of champagne like carbonation that goes throughout. There is also a lingering sesame seed flavor.

In my experience, it goes Cantillon, Hanssens, this, and then Tilquin. (666 characters)

2004 Vintage

Pours very still, with the tiniest skim of carbonation gracing the surface. Nose is a ton of tropical fruit - pineapple, passion fruit, plum, almost like red Kool-Aid. Verrry mild barnyard aroma, considering the age of this one. Taste is sweet, then sour, then a surprisingly dry, minty finish. Not much "funk" to be found in the taste either. Lots of lemon and other sweet/sour citrus flavors, though. These combine with a very moderate level of tannins (from the oak, I'm assuming) to dry out the palate in preparation for the next sip. Carbonation level is a bit higher than the appearance reveals; very Champagne-like, and quite refreshing.

I'm enjoying my second glass of this with Cypress Grove Pepper Chevre, which is a very nice pairing if you're so inclined. (783 characters)

A - Pours a hazy golden orange, with a medium white head.

S - Smells funky, barnyard, tart fruits, earth

T - Bitter mineral taste, tart lemon, green apple, a little sweetness sneaking in with the funk. Excellent.

O - An excellent geuze, although i prefer Cantillon classic. (320 characters)

2008 vintage, poured into a tulip.

Appearance: Pours a fairly hazy, pale straw color with moderate carbonation. About 3" of white head forms on the pour, which has excellent retention and decent lacing.

Smell: Smells of sour green apples, followed by a ton of grassiness, hay, lactic sourness and barnyard funk. Quite aromatic.

Taste: In line with the smell. Light green apple notes, as well as some pear, followed by intense lactic sourness and funk. Very puckering and drying on the finish. About what one would expect from a classic gueuze such as this.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Light bodied with prickly carbonation. Pretty good here. Overall, a great gueuze. Very sour, puckering and refreshing. Had this directly following a '04 Lou Pepe Gueuze, and definitely preferred this beer. (785 characters)

December 2012 bottle.

Ap - Cloudy and lively light amber. Fluffy off white head that hangs around for a while and leaves behind steady lacing.

Ar - Sharp lemons and apples, with bretty horseblanket. There is also some must, and dusty grains.

T - Much more dry than sour. This is probably the closest thing to classic Cantillon I've had. It's similar to the aroma. Sweet and dry apples seem to be the forefront. Followed by a grainy lemon tartness. (452 characters)

A) Poured into a snifter. Poured an excellent hazy, golden straw. Provided a very fizzy head that disipated rather quickly.

S) Very pugnacious with slight funkiness to it. Smelled heavily of sharp fruits, very strongly of apple and lemon.

T) Deeply sour, and rather funky. Funkiness becomes balanced in with the fruit. Tastes strongly of apple, lemon, cherries, strawberry. Extraordinarily balanced and very delicious.

M) Incredibly dry. Finishes clean and leaves the palatte almost imediately.

O) One hell of a beer. Very enjoyable and tart, and ultimately a highly recommended beer for anyone a fan of sours. (631 characters)

Served in a snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden with a quickly dissipating white head. Aroma of funk and lemon zest. Very sour taste, not much sweetness. Finishes dry. Gets more complex as it warms in the glass. Light mouthfeel with effervescent carbonation. Overall, an extremely well crafted geuze. (309 characters)

2002 vintage consumed in March 06.

Beginning with a rather burning odor of gasoline or wood alcohol, I was rather worried about my expensive purchase. I decided to give the beer some time, as I would a glass of fine wine. It worked. Whether it was the time, the air, or the warmth of the bar, ten minutes of resting in my glass turned this brew from ethanol to exquisite...that or my nose learned to enjoy the smell of gasoline, which could also be the case.

The aromas are completely overpowering. This beer is highly acidic, very citrusy (limes and lemons mostly), and smells strongly of a pig farm. Mango and pear might be in there too but who really cares. This is more about "nose feel" than odor and this beer brings my nose to life, dresses it in a tux, and tangos it onto stage for a performance of Stomp.

Appearance is yellow-peach, very flakey, with a thick foamy off white head. The carbonation is insane but declines to tolerable levels after a few minutes.

Taste is as wild as an Irish brannigan, sour as the sour candy craze of 1991, bitter like an old English librarian drinking quinine, and as pissed as that old monk on the St. Bernie Bottle.

Mouthfeel can be extrapolated from the rest of this review.

Drinkability goes without saying.

Update: 1997 vintage consumed at the brewery on 8-18-08. The bottle quite literally had a spider on the webbed cork when it came to the table. :) It was every bit as good as the newer vintages and then some. This one CAN handle age very well. Buttery with full lemon notes. (1,537 characters)

Hazy orange appearance, you just know its going to be sour when you take your fisrt smell. Very stinky, earthy smell aswell. This had a very loooooong flavour, covered every part of your tongue, tremendoudly sour, tart acidity, one of my favourite gueuzes, lemony, grassy, earthy, dry, if your a fan of gueuze you must seek this out!!!!!!! (339 characters)
