A-Really carbonated. Even after sitting for a few weeks. Light in color and slight haze

S-Sour as expected with solid funk

T-Pucker up friends, this was sour. But finished as expected with a champagne like quality

I have a couple of cases of this and look forward to trying another next year.

A-The projectile cork nearly killed my dog. A bit of a gusher. Big, yeast stained head. Modest lacing.

S-Tart, nearly vegetal aroma.Wet, soggy wood. Sour apple cider. Lemon zest. Very aromatic and intense.

T-Suck my lemons! That is sour. Subtle woodiness. Grassy, too. There is some semblance of a malt here. The tartness is bright and lingering.

M-Lively carbonation. Tartness sticks to my lips. Has some body to it.

O/D-Worth the $20 750ml. I drank this beer very young. I may need to grab another and throw her in the cellar. Just a very earthy, natural medley of flavors.

This beer style is not really my cup of tea. The beer pours a great generous head. The smell is like sour fruit. The taste is a fruit sour beer concoction that is not what I really like. The mouthfeel was awesome with this beer but the sourness kinda ruins it for me. Sorry, I am sure sour beer guys love this stuff....and they can have it. Now throw me a Pliny.

Bottom Line: Pucker up! this one is sour.

750 ml poured into a Russian River stemmed glass.

A: a nice cloudy yellow almost orange like color with a quick dissipating head made of larger bubbles from the high carbonation.

S: Light sourness but dominated by good Brett funk. A little bit of tropical fruit character, pineapple and citrus. Also a good earthy but not exactly barnyard funk, but none the less, a good earthy farm funk. As it warms I get a strange almost nutty popcorn like aroma but not buttery, hard to explain but only something you would find in Lambic. Very interesting and complex.

T: Funky tropical fruit and mild Brett. Sour but not totally mouth puckering, refreshing and crisp. Complex and drinkable bit hard to pinpoint exactly what I'm tasting.

M: Crisp from the high carbonation and dry. Funk lingers with the light tropical fruit.

O: Refreshing, sour and honestly a good example, if not one of the top Geuzes readily available in my area. Will buy again an recommend to any one who is curious.

Sampled from a 750ml bottle I picked up in Belgium.

A - Golden with a strong haze and a dusting of head.

S - Fantastic funk and tart! A nice contrast between the two. Hints of orange and lemon.

T - Wonderfully tart but balanced well by a complex funk. Great depth to this beer yet everything comes together nicely. The tartness seems to grow as the beer warms.

M - A somewhat fine consistency with a low carbonation.

O - Wow! A nice bite yet very refined. Can wait to get more of this.

On an unusually cool July day, this is perfect. The scent is barnyard funky. Taste is tart and bright with an incredibly dry finish. I know that most think of this as an ideal summer beer, but for me it's the perfect Autumn drink. Highly recommended for a lazy Sunday wishing that football had already started.

A: Extreme head off a mild pour – looks like sea foam as it settles, no lacing, light golden in color with a hint of peach, a little hazy – 4.00, S: Extremely tart nose with signs of lemon and vinegar, I also smell what reminds me of paint thinner and grapefruit zest, dead-on for the style – 4.50, T: Sourness plus that skirts on the side of puckering, quite medicinal and with tons of vinegar, other flavor remind me of green apples and grass, quite funky all-around – 4.25, M: Light and crisp mouthfeel – 4.00, D: I can’t claim to be an expert of the style, but from what I do know about Gueze this hits the bulls eye, very drinkable – 4.25

Beer is copper in colour, with a moderately-sized white head. Head fades quickly.

The smell is divine. Funky horse blanket scents dominate, but are enveloping rather than excessive. Lemon and other tart fruit scents. Just beautiful.

The taste is very good, but not up to the nose. Again, funky yeast, lemon, quite tart. In keeping with my experiences with 3F beers, the tartness is well balanced. Very flavourful and potent but not overdone. Very complex. Dry, with a fairly bitter finish, which was a surprise and, while not unpleasant, perhaps a slight disappointment. Great.

Light bodied, highly carbonated but with very delicate bubbles. Astringent and very tart.

Overall, terrific.

stevedore gave me the opportunity to try this beer. As the cork was removed, there was a bit of an overflow. Fortunately only a tiny bit of the beer was lost, did not go out of control.

The beer had a cloudy orange appearance. It smelled funky or perhaps stinky. I can't help but think of my son's sweaty feet. Maybe some rotten fruit. It's not a bad smell though, I love it. Its unique and interesting. The aroma is definitely the first of that kind that I experience.

Taste wise this is a tart bomb, it just drilled into my cheekbones. It's also unbelievably sour. Minimal sweetness detected in this beer. At first I thought it seemed sweet but it's really the tartness that is the highlight of this beer. There are also some notable bitter lemon rind. The beer is highly acidic as I could tell at the finish. Kind of like when you eat a lemon. It's lightly carbonated and has a light bodied mouthfeel.

Overall it's a great beer! The aroma and the taste contrast each other in this beer. What I smelled didn't exactly seem to match what the beer tasted like - as opposed to for example the smell and taste of an apple coming together. They both were completely different experiences in this beer. Awesome beer, it was great to share and talk about with a friend. I recommend it and definitely share with someone. Hope to try this again someday.

Served in a snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden with a quickly dissipating white head. Aroma of funk and lemon zest. Very sour taste, not much sweetness. Finishes dry. Gets more complex as it warms in the glass. Light mouthfeel with effervescent carbonation. Overall, an extremely well crafted geuze.

375ml March 2012 into a tulip. Pours a relatively dingy dull hazed straw, minor head, ok lacing.

The aroma reaches from afar, sour. The taste perfectly portrays so you know exactly what to expect in the flavor. excellent funk but not a lot of barrel

Sour apple, unripe tart pear. Nicely balanced tiny herbal bitter to the preceding funk.
Thin astringent grapeskin mouthfeel is perfectly appropriate for the flavor. perfect

marvelous at room temp, rough and smooth all simultaneous

March 2012 Bottle

Pours a dark golden clear color. Active head coming out of the bottle and into the glass that disappears almost as it formed. Very active carbonation in the glass.

Smells of lemon, funk, very dry, faint oak.

Taste is acidic, tart, sour apples, but not overwhelming. Very balanced with some sweetness.

Mouthfeel is crisp, refreshing, not too intense of a sour.

Overall, a very enjoyable sour.

375ml bottle dated February 2012
Appearance is hazy golden orange with bright white foam that dissipates rapidly. Smell is of lemon and funk. Diaper funk. A touch metallic. Not overpowering in the aroma department. Flavor is delicious funk, a little bit of sweetness, and moderate acidity. Some lemon rind and nectarine. The sour lingers more than the Tilquin that im drinking side by side. Would like some more bubbles but the lower level of carb is probably true to style. A delicious gueuze.

Bottle poured into a stemless wine glass. 2012 vintage, slightly over a year old at this point. I got this puppy in a box from Belgiuminanbox.com. If you can scrape the scratch for the shipping, it's definitely worth it.

A - excellent. Dark orange and yellow, much darker than Cantillon and other various gueuzes I've had. Cloudy and carbonated. Big head on the forced pour, but it recedes very quickly.

S - meh, a little sour and skunky for me. There's something strange here. I don't get a lot of fruit on the nose, just a champagne-like acridness.

T - the taste is better. A nice sourness at first leads into some fruity residue. Lots of lime, but there's nothing really sweet about it.

M - the bitterness sticks around pleasantly, and the carbonation is definitely present throughout.

O - I don't know how much bottles of this go for in the States, but I'd pick it up again for sure.

05 vintage.
Pours a nice fizzy head, hazy apricot colored.

Nose nice blended sour juice, light funk aged tart fruit like, little grassy light lemony tartness, nice funk and just a touch of oak.

Taste same, tart fruit funk, dry bready malt, little cork, great balance of sour fruit, with a bit of a sharp acidity and some lemony tartness, light wet hey and a grassy funk, very light vinous quality and a good juicy sourness with faint oak. Finish is semi flemmy and acidic, nice lingering sour fruit and light lemony flavor.

Mouth is med to light bodied, decent carb for how old it is.

Overall fantastic beer, on par with or maybe even setting the standard for an oude gueuze. Great structure, acid levels, sour flavors, long finish, just tasty.

Lovely Cali afternoon, 90 and breezy. Needed a beer for the occasion. thinking this one may just fit the bill...

Pours a picture perfect deep gold. swirling it around with nice lacing and carbonation. i can smell it instantly. Imagining my backyard is fill with lemon zest fields and straw haystacks.

Taste is nicely acidic. mellow and understated. peppery and slight spice. nice orange(y) flavor going on. so well balanced. The 'drinkabilty' factor is HIGH on this brew. i could have a few of these and not have the life sucked out of my mouth like those delicious RR sours.

Im diggin it. if im being picky, id love this brew to throw a 'juicy' bag around its neck, and take strut around if you know whata mean

2012 bottle

Appearance- Golden orange, pretty clear with a thin cap of white head

Smell- Lots of funk, lemony acidity is there, along with an earthiness. Definitely dominated by the funk

Taste- Lemon and green apple skin sourness, a bit of a grassy herbalness, which develops into a musty, dry funk. Aftertaste brings more of the green apple flavors

Mouthfeel- Light mouthfeel with lots of prickly carbonation. Finishes dry and crisp, very nice

Overall- Top notch stuff, nothing really else to say. Consistently good and easy enough to get a hold of, I always keep a few bottles around!

Looking forward to trying this beer, after having tried the Golden Blend previously which was fantastic.

Average appearance, golden body with thin white head.

Smell is not particularly attractive, a very funky oak smell with a hint of rotten sweetness.

Taste is better, funky, oaky, and slightly tart. Slightly vinous on the back end. Makes me think of licking a forest floor followed by sucking on an old lemon. Doesn't sound good, but somehow it works.

Overall, a tasty brew. Surprised by the lack of tartness in this, expected more sour. Still, I enjoy it.

A bottle at a small watering hole in Bruges. This beer is dark yellow in color with lots of lively carbonation. Aroma and taste is similar. Typical Belgian geuze. Funky, leathery, tobacco leaf with a very dry finish. Easy to drink. Sour. Just a notch below Cantillon's version for overall funk and sour complexity.

A: pours a clear and bright gold with a half finger head that is dense and retains well into a duvel snifter
S: smells of bretty barnyard with some clean sourness and oak
T: starts off quite tart and sour apple but fades to some funk and oak. brett is somewhat prominent but not overbearing. aftertaste is kind of medicinal and band aidy with a bit of lingering sourness
M: lighter side of medium in the mouth with soft but prominent carb and a drying finish

375ml.. Teku glass.

A: Pours a deep golden color with a ring of pure white, persistent head--medium to large sized bubbles. Champagne-like effervescence. Good clarity.

S: Acidic sour, some sort of sweet fruity candy, grapefruit, wheat, earth and funk and grass, mineral notes. Vanilla and oak come out in droves as it warms.

T: Sour apple, citrus, oak as it warms, finishing dry and puckering. Sour is light to moderate.

M: Light and fizzy. Medium body and light carbonation.

O: An excellent, readily available gueuze. The level of sourness really hits the spot, but the barrel character is very light.

750ml bottled on April 27 2010. Served in a Russian River stemmed glass

Appearance: Golden yellow color with less than a finger of soapy white head, which dissipated quickly to a thin collar. Slightly hazy in the glass with quite a bit of visible carbonation

Smell: Lemon, vinegar, oak, musty basement, barnyard, grass, green apple.

Taste: Acidic lemon juice, lemon rind, quite a bit of barnyard funk, white wine grape, a bit of lactic sourness in the finish/aftertaste. Overall sourness is medium.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and crisp mouthfeel. Carbonation is bordering on high, but works well for the style. Finishes dry.

Overall: Really good gueuze. This is one of the classics for a reason.

Opened as part of a mini sour tasting, one of the most classic gueuzes out there - very excited to finally try this one after the bottle had been teasing me for so long. Pours a slightly hazy copper color with little bits of gold that streamline the edges. A soapy and bubbly white head grows and recedes in one fluid motion, leaving only a small bit of lacing at the very top of the glass.

Quite a bit of fruit skin sourness hits me on the initial whiff - very tart in character and lightly acidic, with a small amount of lacto behind it all. Some very mild hops show up, grassy and herbal, and add a very slight bitterness that extends the tartness into the realm of astringency, just for a brief moment. Tartly bitter. Is that a real thing?

Lots of funky yeast in this one, too - it's got that characteristic smell of Belgian gueuze to it. The sweaty sock funk it strong in the start and comes out even more as the beer rises in temp. A touch of finishing oak and wet hay, jammin' on the barnyard walls. Funky, funky, funky, reaching for damp and dirty blankets in the middle of a barnyard floor.

The taste starts off with a nice tartness, but it's definitely not as sour as I thought it would be, especially after smelling it. For a gauge, it's slightly less tart than Cantillon's Gueuze, for those who may have had that before this. After the initial sour apple and stone fruit skins, a mild astringency bites the tip of the tongue and quickly gives way to the funkadelic flavors. You can taste Belgium in this beer.

Drub, musky and funk yeast plagues the aftertaste, spread across a canvas of burnt oak - the barrel comes out hard in the end. Really dry overall, especially in the finish, with an easily discernible, funky bitterness upon fading out. By the final sip, oak seems to be one of the heaviest flavors of the aftertaste, and that's what I'm left with after the beer is gone. Not bad. Pretty thin bodied, crisp, wet, and sharp mouth feel, lots of carbonation.

Definitely a great gueuze, and it was interesting to see the differences in the style between this and the Cantillon gueuze (they were enjoyed back-to-back). This one was not quite as sour/tart and the oak/funk was a bit more forward. Both good in their own ways, no doubt about that. If you're on the fence about sours, try this one along with the Cantillon gueuze (if you can get/find them). If those don't convert you, then you'll probably never like sours.

EDIT: 9/4/2013

After having many, many more bottles of this, the variation is lovely. Sometimes it's much funkier, sometimes it's much more tart, but it's always delicious. I still think I prefer Cantillon's original gueuze to this one, but hey - I can still find this stuff on the shelves occasionally... win!

A: into a flute, hazy gold-colored body with visible effervescence and an off-white three-finger head that slimmed but persisted; patches of lace

S: lemon zest and fresh barnyard hay

T: lotsa of citrus (lemon) and yeasty flavors that are reminiscent of barnyards, hay, mustiness, and "funk" - pale, delicate malts run under the predominant flavors

M: crisp, sparkly, tart, refreshing, fuzzy

O: my first gueuze, so I'm trying to play it cool here, but based on what I've heard and read, this is a pretty damn good example of the style - I have been leery of the sour beer for quite some time now, but this was delightful.
