Bottle shared side-by-side with Herfst by Willcarrera and Agold. Poured from a 750ml into a tulip.

A: Pours a darkish, murky gold with a nice tower of white foam. Great lacing.

S: Earthy funk and mildly fruity sourness in the nose. Gets a little more spicy and herbal as it warms.

T: Moderately sour with a good lactic base. Apricot, earthy mushroom, garlic, wet leaf. Much more funky and a little more complex than Herfst. Sweetness and a tiny bit of citric hoppiness comes out as it warms. Hay, grain, and more wet funk in the finish.

M: Perfect mouthfeel for a geuze. Sort of light with lively but not overpowering carbonation.

O: This was my favorite of the two. A bit more funky and complex. Thanks A and Will for the chance to try these fantastic blends.

Bottle shared with Josh (Maneliquor) at CBC Islington at Bruce’s birthday. Nice rich looking bright amber, huge white foam head in the glass which slowly dissipates to thin. Nose is probably the most beautiful gueuze I’ve tasted. I could just sit and smell this all day. It’s big sour, acidic, lots of horse blanket and funk, caramel, green apples, very tangy. Deep rich aromas. Taste is slightly more restrained but still a complex and full flavoured limbic. Green apples, sour, acidic, lots of funk and horse blanket, yeasty, grainy malt. Balance is about as good as it gets. Phenomenal beer.

First review of 2014

Presentation: 750 ml bottled 4/22/2010. Best before 4/2020. Poured into a Cantillon stemmed glass. Cork removed with relative ease, but did not shoot out, and the bottle was not a gusher as has been reported with some of these.

Appearance: Pours a dark sunset orange color with 2+ fingers of an eggshell colored head. Great retention and lots of lacing. Body is very hazy with tons of visible carbonation streaming throughout the glass.

Smell: Barnyard funk, horseblanket, rotting fruit, green apple, basement, orange, hay. Super funky and inviting.

Taste: Tart, funky and sour all the way through to the finish. Orchard fruit, lemon, earthy, herbal with a noticeable malt character that provides a slight sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium/light bodied, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Carbonation is high but works for the style. Finishes dry.

Overall: As with the other Armand'4 beers this is a world glass gueuze. To me this is the most "different" beer in the series, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Put aside the fact that this is part of a set, and this is worth seeking out on it's own.
