A: Pours very dark red with a fizzy dark pink head that fades within half a minute with a damn fiizy noise. Then we are left with a bright, dark, apparently flat liquid. It looks like a 20 years old kriek. Amazing!
S: I had expected a rich, powerful sweet fruit nose. It is the exact contrary. Deep, woody, with dark cherries, cheery skin and dark chocolate. No sweetness, but some lactiness. Dark red wine, grape, vanilla, complex but very subtle.
T: The surprise doesn't stop there. The palate is unexpectedly very sour, puckering. Then come dark cherries flavors along with some dark fruits, grape, prune, blackberry. After the dark fruit wave come woody and vanilla flavors, the only hint of sweetness in this beer. But those are very transient and fleeting, the palate finishes on musk, hay, with some funk and barnyards flavors. The aftertaste is more focused on a mix of red fruits and dark fruits with cherries, raspberries and grapes, actually reminding of Homage.
M: the mouthfeel is very smooth, a bit jammy, as for the Framboos. The beer being medium bodied. But the carbonation is absolutely not missing, a bit subdued but this faint character perfectly balances the high sourness of this beer, making it a perfect sipper.
O: Woh, another masterpiece from Armand. This is very complex and actually, I would not advise to try this to someone unused to Drie Fonteinen. But this is definitely one of the best offer from this blender. And I see this aging very well.

375ml poured into Cantillon wine glass. Bottle date of 11-13-2012. Best by 2017.

Appearance: Pours an entrancing ruby garnet color. Vigorous pouring gives me only a wispy, thin, pink head.

Smell: Deep, rich aromas of cherries abound in this delightful brew. Clearly the cherries decided to go for a swim in some oak barrels as the pleasant background smell of wood dances about. Fairly one dimensional, but great.

Taste: Can you say "cherry jolly rancher"? This beer tastes exactly like a cherry jolly rancher, but with a touch of sourness. The sweetness of the cherries cuts deep into the lambic/gueuze base. In the background, I can taste the base beer and it's really nice. Basement funk, barnyard, and very crisp.

Mouthfeel: Medium-low carbonation. Medium-light bodied. Very refreshing.

Overall: A tastefully done kriek. The cherries are really in your face, but almost taste slightly fake. For that reason, I cannot get behind this beer. My vote is to stick with Cantillon Kriek as the #1 cherry beer.

Thanks, www.etregourmet.com!

Deep crimson with nearly zero carbonation. Small amount of visible bubbles and a very minimal head. Left the glass oily on the way down.

The aroma is similar to 3F's Oude Kriek, which is a fine, fine thing. Big cherry notes, moderate lactic sourness, some oak, and good amounts of gueuze-like funk. Complete, and near perfect for the style. Loved it.

Big cherry and juice like characteristics throughout along with good amounts of oak, earthy funk. Very, very drinkable. Moderate sourness. This isn't nearly as sour as other krieks, even Oude Kriek itself. It's tasty, but I prefer the flavor of the regular Oude Kriek.

Medium bodied with nearly no carbonation. Almost juice like, but fuller in body.

The smell is incredible, the taste is good, and the mouthfeel is lacking. I believe Oude Kriek is the better beer, but I would just be nitpicking. This is still tasty stuff.

375ml caged and corked bottle. The label comes off looking like a bad slasher movie promotion.

This beer pours a clear, very dark purplish-pink hue, with two fingers of bubbly, tightly foamy, and veritable cotton-candy pink head, which leaves little beyond a few wayward specks of rain spatter lace around the glass as it quickly recedes.

It smells of tart, slightly sweetened (at least compared to the Cantillons of the world) cherry fruit, further raspberry and blackberry notes, biscuity, pie-like pale malt, a certain Pinot Noir red wine essence, a mild earthy funk, and subtle leafy, nutty hops. The taste is more rather tart cherry pit acetic acid, graham cracker-esque bready caramel malt, a separate fleshy cherry, raspberry, and cranberry fruitiness, more fruit-forward red wine, almost Merlot-like in its bearing, and a softly musty funk.

The carbonation is light and frothy, the body an adequately fruit-propelled medium weight, and actually somewhat smooth, flying in the face of one's initial impression of a sourness wasteland. It finishes similarly off-dry, the tartness of the mildly overbearing cherry not exactly the only game in town, as the grainy malt and sidling funk are still good to go.

I suppose that one could call this a balanced fruit lambic, especially from this particular brewer. Maybe the intent was otherwise, but the cherry, while pungent, isn't quite the palate-wrecker I was expecting. Tasty, like an unsweetened fruit pie, and well worthy of a try.

Virtually no carbonation; comes out flat, and pours to a thin, off-balance frothy pink-and-white head. Brew is a beautiful shade of wine- or blood- red, and shot through with light.

Hints of a fruity funkiness dominate the nose. Tartness and sourness, as well, although I can't squarely place it on cherries. A bit of a flat cherry pit aroma, flowers, and grain. Each flavor is fairly subtle throughout.

Whoa, now the flavor is something! So much going on: a slight puckering sour; malty tartness; extremely mild funk; cherry pits; raspberry; wheat; green vinous or vegetal notes (coming on stronger as I go). Really a fantastically complex beer to enjoy.

Amazing feel for the style. Tiny bit of sting; thin but tart and sour; huge wine-like warmth on the back-end (very surprising for the low ABV). Smooth and lingering.

There isn't a complaint to be had about this beer. So many different flavors going on, and packaged in a smoothly drinkable presentation. Excellent take on an Oude Kriek.

I was told by the store owner that this was a one-off beer, because 3F had accidentally used too many cherries. If that's the case, then I'm glad that I got the chance to try it out, and sad I didn't get more.

375ml corked and caged bottle into Drie Fonteinen stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a very minimal dark pink head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a clear, deep, dark, almost purple red. Lacing is spotty and sparse but with good stick. Really stunning color.

Nose is robust sweet and tart cherries. Subtle cobwebs, oak and just a touch of cheesiness. Delicious!

Opens sweet and tart cherries. Puckering in the middle with more fruit and hints of cobweb, oak, and barnyard funk. Very juicy throughout. Simpler and less funky than the other Kriek offerings from Drie Fonteinen. End is puckering and accented with a fruity finish. Excellent.

Light bodied with moderate to ample carbonation. Silky and puckering in the mouth and goes down quenching and slick. Messy finish with a lingering, spritzy aftertaste. Very good.

I'd go as far as to say that this is probably the best fruit-based beer that Drie Fonteinen makes. Simple but so deliciously in your face. Intense Red is aptly named and totally awesome!
