After learning there is a fresh new release of this, I figured im overdue on popping and reviewing a 2012 bottling. Poured into a matching 3F tumbler, the brew appears deep, dark red with pink highlights around the edges. Less than a finger of pink cap fades to a ring around the edge leaving spotty lace on the glass.

The aroma is mostly comprised of cherries. Very earthen and almost herbal and juicy. A mild medicinal feel, grass and cherry pits/skin fill out the nose. The taste is all natural cherry flavor with all the sugars removed- pits and skin of cherry is all that remains. Somewhat herbal to medicinal with a mild bitterness. The typical 3F funk and sourness is very subdued with the cherry character being the star of the show.

This is medium bodied, moderately carbonated and overall very enjoyable. Calling it intense red is very fitting. The cherry character is the star of the show...almost to a fault as it hides what I love about 3F. Still worth trying and something I would buy again if the price was right.

12.7 oz bottle poured into shaker. Clear red to purple with no head or lacing. Aroma is tart cherries, cherry cough syrup, sour cherry, breadcrumb malt, and some oak. Taste is moderately sour with lactic acidity under cherry skin flavors, lightly sweet cherry juice, and if you focus there’s a little wood and leather bitterness; the medicinal flavor is prominent, which I find unfortunate. Light to medium body, sticky texture, low carbonation, and a lip-puckering dry finish.

I’ll admit I am generally NOT a big fan of sour beer, especially intensely sour beer.

Appearance – Pours a nice dark purple ruby color, with a moderate head, and very good lacing.

Smell – Ooh, an intense sour cherry scent with lots of wood. Smells nice, but I’m afraid it will be too sour for my liking.

Taste – Sour cherries with oak. Although sour, it isn’t ‘over the top’ sour, and I’m actually surprised how much I like it.

Mouthfeel – Nicely carbonated, with just a short sour aftertaste that is rather pleasant.

Drinkability – A surprisingly good sour beer to me. I hope they make more!

Bottled in 2012

Pours deep red/purple. I don't believe I've seen a beer pour quite this deep of a hue. Little carbonation, just hints of a ring forms around the beer.

Intense rich cherries in the aroma. Almonds and vanilla and oak. While many krieks have this almond character, I haven't had a beer with this much of it. Extremely fruity despite the age. Hints of citrus and earthy funk, but this is mostly about the intense complex cherry character. As it warms the brett comes out more clearly.

Quite sour, but not over the top. Tart cherries upfront followed by more that rich almondy cherry character. Almost plum-like dark cherry character. Lactic acid and oak linger on the palate. Earthy brett mingles in as well. The complex cherry character keeps delivering. As I become accustomed to the sourness, more sweet and meaty cherries come out. Not actually sweet on the palate though, as the beer is bone dry.

Acidic and tannic on the palate but very low, almost no carbonation. Initially this was a drawback as I felt carbonation might deliver the flavors better, but as I sit with it, the lack of carbonation allows the darker mellower flavors to come out.

One of the most complex krieks I've had. Even with age the fruit keeps on delivering.
