Well, a very bad man offered me a taste of this in his store this week (while I was, uh, working) & I went directly back & picked up a bottle. Jerk. 750ML minimialist Fulton bottle split with my wife.

Said bottle seems...heavy. Really heavy. Like, the heaviest bottle I've ever had in hand. I feel the urge to curl it. I resist, & open it instead. Out flows a golden, amber brew that delivers carbonation only after a pour of about two feet above the glass - but it's persistent. Nose is very, very, thick. Fruity. But thick. Like there's a lack of oxygen in the beer smell. Caramel apples. That's it.

Patience is so gooey it practically oozes out of the glass. Massively rich, this is one of few beers that probably took so many ingredients it justifies the premium price. Big malts, huge sweetness, & a continuation of the nose of caramel apple. Alcohol lashes out about 1/3 of the way through my pour; biting, warming. There's a deep, syrupy taste that I can't quite identify, but it's luscious. Mild bitterness cuts in at the end. At 13.2% this is a dangerous beer that should come with bright red warning labels.

The mouthfeel of this beer is a riotous triumph. Fulton continues to impress, & this is their finest beer to date. Excellent, & not far off of the elite for the category.

Pours a dark reddish amber color with one finger of head that slowly settled to a thin cap. Moderate amount of sticky lacing is left down the glass.

The aroma is not surprising for a big barleywine. Plenty of caramel and toffee with fruity hints of cherries and apples. The alcohol is also readily apparent.

Sweet malt permeates the palate that is then cleansed by the alcohol. Thick caramel flavor along with fruity esters are somewhat balanced by hop bitterness. The hops add some citrus flavor. Big alcohol flavor in the finish. Pretty hot.

Superbly carbonated. Allows the flavors to really permeate the palate while still maintaining life. I have been with Fulton and their carbonation standards.

A real sipper and best shared with a friend or two. A little too hot with alcohol, but still very enjoyable.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. Very slight off white head which quickly fades away. Lacing is light.

Smell: A rich, bready, and fruity malt forward aroma with good hints of caramel and fruit esters. Toasted malts with hints of biscuit, sweet caramel, toffee, grains, yeast, and cracker. Big fruit hints of apple and cherry along with some dark fruit hints of raisin, fig, plum, and dates. Sweet hints of brown sugar. Also some wood like scent and some vanilla hints. Subtle earthy hops in the background. A nice fruity aroma.

Taste: Like the smell hints at, a sweet, bready, and fruity malt driven taste with good notes of caramel malt and fruits. Bready toasted malt with some upfront notes of biscuit, sweet caramel, toffee, butterscotch, vanilla, grains, yeast, and cracker. Big mix of fruit flavors with some apple and cherry. Dark fruit undertones of plum, raisin, fig, and dates. Sweet notes of brown sugar and a little molasses. Some woody notes as well. Light taste of earthy hops in the background. A pretty good malt forward barleywine taste.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy, slick, and somewhat syrupy. Some alcohol is felt but its very smooth considering the 13.2 ABV.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Barleywine. More like the malty British style with some nice fruity notes.

Fulton, makes a barley wine?! awesome, big accomplishment from a smaller brewery. The appearance is good, not as deep crimson/garnet color that are normal to this style. thin quickly dissipating off white head. smell also kinda lacking for this style, there is some minimal sweet matly aromas, smells more hoppy to me that a typical barley wine which worries me, hope this isn't a bigfoot clone, also I can smell the booze quit a bit as it warms. Flavors...wow!! this is a hoppier barleywine but they chose to go the way of citrusy hops, don't know if it's mosaic or citra but it is quit apparent and definitely AWESOME! there is a nice malty backbone and some slight caramellyness and underlying fruitiness -dried and fresh to it as well. The booziness that was very noticeable in the nose is COMPLETELY masked in the flavor which is absolutely insain considering the 13%+ a.b.v. in this behemoth of a barleywine! almost forgot about the mouthfeel, this is almost as close as it gets to perfection, carbonation is minimal, with a slightly silky after effect on the palate. I love it except for the price but there's unfortunately no way im not buying one or two more of these pigs!

Appearance: Clear amber, good head (especially for such a high ABV).

Smell: Super sweet, maraschino cherries, extremely "bright" smelling, maybe from the ABV? Some caramel shows up as it warms. Very interesting smell.

Taste: Sweet. The cherry note from the smell shows up as red/cherry popsicle sweetness. Caramel sweetness comes along also. Enough bitterness in the finish to keep it from being too sweet.

Overall: I forget about Fulton sometimes because their flagship beers are so mediocre, but their big bottles are impressive. Worthy Adversary is very good, Libertine is good, and I really like this one, Patience. I like the cherry notes in the smell and taste, too bad it was so limited (and expensive!).
