Notes/Commercial Description:
War & Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout aged with Peace Coffee's Guatemalan Organic Dark Roast. We measure out a pound of whole beans per barrel of beer and add it directly to our tanks, then allow it to infuse for nearly a week. It's a combination so natural, you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other.

This is Fulton's Worthy Adversary Imperial Stout aged on whole dark roast coffee beans from Peace Coffee. The regular version of the stout is O.K. in my book, but not in my favorites. This is 9.5% ABV, so most definitely a sipper! The day after Winterfest this year Sj and I hung around Minneapolis and ended up walking into Fulton's tap room randomly on the release day for this beer. That was a happy experience and we were able to talk with one of the brewer/owners and also try samples of the Peace Coffee they were serving that day. I bought my allotment of beers that day, but there are still some to be found around the twin cities right now.

Aroma: Sweet cocoa and roasted dark grains are dominant. I get a slight yeasty aroma as well. As it warms I get more coffee and even some dark fruit aromas.

Appearance: This is nearly opaque and black as night. A fine tan head that fades quickly.

Flavor: Sweet malted milk and chocolate up front that drifts off to a bittersweet chocolate off-dry finish. Dark roast espresso coffee comes in on the second sip and lingers after the finish. A hint of dark cherry as it warms and some caramel as well. Mouthfeel is a bit lighter than many RIS beers. The end is nearly astringent. Mild alcohol warming effect.

Overall: For me this is Fulton's best beer by far. The coffee flavors in this ratchet up the complexity and make this far better than the Worthy Adversary. In a milder beer the dark roast beans would make this astringent and undrinkable, but I think they hit the balance just right for my tastes.

A-Pours dark brown or damn close to black. Head is also impressive. Dark brown head leaves lines of thick lacing.

S-The use of coffee in this beer really shows up in the nose. A genuine aroma of cold, dark roast coffee with a shot of espresso. There is chocolate and roast as well but the coffee wins out.

T-I find he aroma to be more impressive. The coffee and espresso is still in there full frontal but the beer finishes a bit weird. The cold, black coffee comes first then a solid additions of bitter roast and dark chocolate. But then the coffee seems to fade off and the the finish is a bit unattractive.

M-Medium to full in body with moderate carbonation. Medium bitterness. Alcohol hidden well.

O-A very tasty brew with a bunch of coffee. However the finish is a little bit odd and I am having trouble explaining why. That is really to only downside to this beer.

Big thanks to JebSinger for this one. Relatively fresh bottle, so I am excited to crack it open.
So, this pours a legit pitch black. A tan head dissapates pretty quickly. Leaving no lacing, which I found surprising. First sniff is a big boozy one. With hints of roastiness.
Mouth feel is chewy, but not overly so. Like it has the feel you expect from a RIS, BUT, it leaves a clean feel, unlike similar beers.
Taste is pretty impressive. Right up front, a nice roasted coffee flavor. Strong, but not over baring, but slightly bitter. A sweetness then rolls to the side of your tongue. A little bit of smokiness then comes in the aftertaste. Overall, it mixes really well together. Nothing over powers anything else. Not overly z sweet like some RIS, nor pointlessly bitter from the roast or over hopping.
Great beer grab it for a nice, 8 degree night
