Russian Imperial Stout |  9.50% ABV

Notes/Commercial Description:
War & Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout aged with Peace Coffee's Guatemalan Organic Dark Roast. We measure out a pound of whole beans per barrel of beer and add it directly to our tanks, then allow it to infuse for nearly a week. It's a combination so natural, you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other.

I've been wanting to try this for a while, and now that it's in bottles that makes it much easier. First and only bottling so far. Tasted 6 April 2013.

Pours black and sludgy, thick, opaque. One finger of mocha tan head, good retention, decent lacing. A rougher pour yields two big fingers of head, longer retention, and much more substantial lacing.

Smell is nice, woody coffee. It's delicate but potent, and fully covers almost any stout presence in the smell. The only hint I get of the base is a woody roast and faint sweetness. Good, but I want more stout in it.

Taste is good. A rich, moderately sweet stout with a coffee topping. Molasses, nicely roasted (meaning not overdone) coffee grounds. Solid, but not amazing. The flavors are pretty well integrated, and hmm, kinda interesting. But falls way short of the top coffee imperial stouts like, for example, Speedway. I want more stout richness, more varied flavors, and for the coffee to bring more to the beer.

Feel is just a little odd. Not exactly thin, not exactly flat, but not working well for me. Oily. The carbonation takes a long time to build, and when it does, it takes longer to subside than I want it to. It's like everything is missing it's cue by a half-second.

This is a good beer. But as imperial stouts go, I don't find it to be anything special. Sweet, tasty, and the integration of the coffee is well-done. But somehow it's not adding up to wowing me.

Big thanks to JebSinger for this one. Relatively fresh bottle, so I am excited to crack it open.
So, this pours a legit pitch black. A tan head dissapates pretty quickly. Leaving no lacing, which I found surprising. First sniff is a big boozy one. With hints of roastiness.
Mouth feel is chewy, but not overly so. Like it has the feel you expect from a RIS, BUT, it leaves a clean feel, unlike similar beers.
Taste is pretty impressive. Right up front, a nice roasted coffee flavor. Strong, but not over baring, but slightly bitter. A sweetness then rolls to the side of your tongue. A little bit of smokiness then comes in the aftertaste. Overall, it mixes really well together. Nothing over powers anything else. Not overly z sweet like some RIS, nor pointlessly bitter from the roast or over hopping.
Great beer grab it for a nice, 8 degree night

Bottle from Josh. Thanks dude! Served in a snifter.

A - Tan foam settles to a collar, partial cap, and tiny specks of lacing. Black body with a glint of brown at the edges of the glass.

S - It's definitely coffee-infused, with supplemental notes of roast, dark chocolate, and caramel. The combination of coffee and sweetness definitely has it verging towards 'double-double' territory rather than straight black coffee.

T - Coffee is a bit more faded in the flavor profile (not sure when this bottle was released). Malt and grain character emerges, with flavors of dark chocolate, vanilla, a light dash of molasses, and a hint of smoke.

M - Chewy, sticky, medium-full body, with a light grittiness in the finish and a low level of lingering stickiness. Minimal alcohol presence.

D - A serviceable medium-high ABV coffee stout that is pretty easy to down for the style. I've been slightly underwhelmed by the Fulton offerings I've had; solid beers, no doubt, but not consistent with the high ratings I've seen. Would try this again on-tap if I knew it was fresh, but wouldn't actively seek it out.
