Russian Imperial Stout |  9.50% ABV

Availability: Winter

Notes/Commercial Description:
War & Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout aged with Peace Coffee's Guatemalan Organic Dark Roast. We measure out a pound of whole beans per barrel of beer and add it directly to our tanks, then allow it to infuse for nearly a week. It's a combination so natural, you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other.

Reviewed from notes, on tap at The Muddy Pig.

A- Very dark black with an off white head, almost brownish white.

S- Coffee and roasted malt dominate the nose. Cannot wait to take the first sip.

T- Coffee. coffee, coffee with hints of sweetness to balance out the bitterness of the coffee. Hint of chocolate.

M- Thick, creamy, very nice what one would expect from a stout of this stature.

O- Beautiful Russian Imperial Stout. The coffee overrides everything else with teases of sweetness to attempt some sort of balance and order. Thankfully this winter has been especially long and bitter to justify this big ass stout. Cheers.

Pours dark black with a one finger tan foamy head, which quickly fades to a collar and leaves spotty lacing. The aroma has coffee, dark roasted malt, and some alcohol.

The taste has coffee, alcohol , dark roasted malt, and chocolate. There is a nice combination of sweetness from the chocolate and bitterness from the dark roasted malt and coffee. I just wish the alcohol was well hidden. The abv is 9.50 %, but it drinks like it is 11 - 12 %.

Medium to full bodied with low carbonation. Nice smooth feel, but there is a fairly strong alcohol aftertaste. A good beer which would be better if the alcohol was better disguised.

Black, viscous liquid that forms a two finger head that had excellant retention before settling to a thick cap. Sheets of lacing covers the glass after each sip.

Impressive aroma of fresh brewed coffee. The kind of coffee that opens the eyes and makes the mouth salavate. Also notes of roasted malt and chocolate but the coffee is the biggest player.

Little bit more beer-coffee balance in the flavor. The beer takes on more of a mocha flavor with the contribution of the malt. Bitterness is moderate that seems to come from the coffee. Light warming in the finish lets you know this beer packs a punch.

Big bodied and mildly carbonated. Soft, creamy texture that, even in a big stout, is much appreciated. Cannot find fault in the mouthfeel.

This is by far the best beer Fulton brews. Awesome coffee stout. My only criticism is that I wished in came in 12oz bottles and sold in 4-packs. The 750ml may be too much for one person in a sitting. I would rather enjoy it over several weekends instead of just one time, especially at the price this beer weighs in at.

750ml bottle poured into a pint glass

A: Dark black, but not pitch black that fades to a brown tint.

S: Cold pressed coffee

T: Cold pressed coffee, tangy and sweet.

M: Creamy and smooth. Full bodied.

O: I was hesitant to buy this beer because of the hefty price tag but I'm glad that I did. Very tasty and better than I expected. I'd buy it again.

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a snifter.
Appearance is dark black with a light khaki 2 finger head and it leaves nice lacing.
Smells of roasted malts, loads of coffee, and chocolate.
Wow, this is a coffee bomb. Extremely fresh coffee, along with roasted malts, dark and milk chocolate, vanilla, and maybe a bit of oak.
Rich, creamy, heavy bodied beer.
If you like coffee this beer is for you. It tastes incredibly fresh like coffee beers should. I don't think this will get better over time but you never know. My new favorite Fulton offering, by a long shot!

After having my fair share of Worthy Adversary, I'm very excited to try this one on for size.

It really does pour like a glass of dark roast - deep dark burnt coffee hues with a slight edge of mahogany clarity. (Mahogany is surprisingly hard to spell.) The half finger of khaki color head dissipates pretty quickly, resulting in a thin but stubborn collar that produces a decent amount of lacing, beading and legs.

Rich oily coffee bean wafts from the glass. Simple vanilla and milk chocolate, some dark bitter chocolate at the same time. It smells like a coffee grinder at work... great creme brulee type aromas with brownie and espresso.

The label reads "...you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other." That's an awfully accurate description. The big dark chocolate flavors of the base beer are tied seamlessly to a bitter coffee character that provides an honest representation of the quality coffee that this was brewed with.

This is fantastic. Pardon my French, but a part of me wishes that my homies at Fulton would cut the crap and start brewing stouts exclusively.

Jet black body with a semi dense head that settles after a bit. Some decent lace. The nose is a bombardment of fresh roasted coffee with some alcohol. Coffee intense flavor with rich malts that produce plenty of sweetness, chocolate and roast. Full bodied and smooth. Outstanding beer that is intensely coffee but has sweetness to balance. A touch pricey, but these days what quality big beer isn't. This one is worth trying once for sure.

Fulton War & Peace Imperial Coffee Stout. Alc. 9.5% by Vol. 750 ml Real Beer. Fulton Brewing Company, Minneapolis, MN.

This one was once upon a time only available in cask form, at special events. And here I am, the lucky recipient of a short-fill bottle. It hasn't been shipped to stores, yet, so far as I know. Yay, for me, and thanks to Fulton and Hohensteins for the gift. Let's open and drink!

Black as night, deep as the darkest depths, with a solid head of toasted brown foam resting atop.

Aroma: Coffee first, vast, rich espresso tones…full, forward, immense, and dominant. It's all about the coffee.

Taste: Boom, ba doom! Bitter espresso notes hit first, followed by cocoa, raspberry, raisins, rum…fat with flavor, full to bursting. Plump. Nearly juicy. Roasty and bitter, rewarding and triumphant.

I know I've enjoyed this in the past, but this is more, I lurve this one, I luff it with a capital F.

Each new sip brings more: more incredible bitterness, more anise, more coffee, more slightly sweet fruit. Just plain ol' nice.

Let's read the copy on the back label, under the Fulton & Peace Coffee logos and under the "Garage Series" banner: "War & Peace is a Russian Imperial Stout aged with Peace Coffee's Guatemalan Organic Dark Roast. We measure out a pound of whole beans per barrel of beer and add it directly to our tanks, then allow it to infuse for nearly a week. It's a combination so natural, you may forget that stout and coffee once existed without each other."

Nice. But no Lebowski references? Okay, but I do like the clever Russian reference to the classic Tolstoy novel.

Growler shared by Dan, thanks!

Vanilla, chocolate and malt blend perfectly in the aroma. Woody and charred overtones in the taste but nothing overwhelming --- just right and very smooth. Chocolaty, roasty, a light bite but as I mentioned, smooth. Medium body and low carbonation makes for a great drinking experience. Glad to have tried it since I missed it when it was released!
