On-tap at Longfellow Grill in Minneapolis, 8 May 2014.

Pours clear golden-orange amber. One finger of white head, good retention and excellent lacing.

Smell is a bit odd, the way the saison yeast and the spice of the rye mix. The yeast brings a warmth that, in combination with the spice, reminds me of some pilseners.

Taste is fine. Some buzz, some bite, but a little on the dull side. Grainy with a moderate bitterness that, though half-hearted, is a little more than I'd like. Not my favorite, and lacking most of the elements I look for in a saison, other than the spice (which is buoyed by the rye).

Feel is quite good. Medium-bodied, with a nice fizz and buzz. Zippy.

Lots of z's in here. Buzz, zest, fizz. I find it more a rye beer than a saison, and while at times the two pieces work well, it's not impressive as either or as a combo. Meh.

On tap at Fulton's taproom. 16 oz. serving in a shaker glass.

Appearance: Color is a clear golden orange. Lots of rising bubbles and a solid two fingers of white head with decent retention. Leaves a good amount of lacing.

Smell: A yeasty, spicy, and fruity Belgian style aroma with good hints of pepper, rye, and fruit. Upfront Belgian yeast with some pepper, farmhouse funk, and clove. Scent of bubblegum and fruit esters of banana, pear, and citrus hints of orange, lemon, mango, and apricot. Slight hints of candied sugar. Pale malt with hints of grains, straw, wheat, rye, and cracker. Light grassy hop hints. A pretty solid farmhouse aroma.

Taste: Like the aroma, a spicy, fruity, and yeasty farmhouse style taste with solid notes of fruit, pepper, and rye. Belgian yeast and farmhouse funk with a good mix of spices including notes of pepper and clove. Solid taste of bubblegum. Fruit taste of banana, pear, and green apple along with citrus notes of mango, lemon, orange, and apricot. Bready pale malt with notes of wheat, grains, straw, rye, and cracker. Subtle notes of candied sugar as well as some grassy hops. A pretty solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied with a carbonation level on the heavier side. Very crisp and smooth. Fairly drying on the finish.

Overall: A very solid twist on a Saison. Good mix of fruit and spice flavors.

I was underwhelmed by this saison. Perhaps this is due to expecting a delicious, robust farmhouse ale and receiving what ends up being more of a wheat/rye-style ale.

Good clear gold color and nice laces of bubbles for appearance. Smell was a bit astringent and mildly sweet. The taste was lackluster to my expectations. Grainy, dry, mildly sweet tropical hints, then a zesty, peppery finish. I find nothing wrong with a zesty, peppery profile in a beer, but overall it ended up being not well-rounded, just simple and grainy then lemon-pepper, a combo that was ultimately not the most inviting. The mouth feel was fairly light.

Not a terrible beer by any means, but understand that it is a zesty wheat ale that would likely appeal to those who don't even like craft beer.

Fulton expact saison

White head with some lace. Color is an orange hued copper.

Flavor: some fruit flavors, mainly orange. A lot of spice from the saison and then from the rye. Coriander and clove. Lemon zest. Bready malts. Biscuity.

Mouthfeel: dry and spiced. Medium bodied. A bit of alcohol shows.

Overall, a bit too much spice and too much booze for my type of saison. Not bad, but not something I want more of.

Fulton's new offering. Let's see what they can bring to this style.

A: Crystal clear light orange body, relatively dark for a saison, with lots of bubbling effects and a quality head thats lasts.

S: Classic belgian style yeast and light taste of citrus, lemon, pepper, and malt.

T: Pretty damn tasty. Not very potent stuff but still some quality flavor that follows the nose spot on. Very drinkable though. The rye certainly benefits this beer and makes it unique.

M: Light, reFRESHing, and lightly carbonated.

O: Pretty solid brew here from our boys at Fulton. This definitely has potential. I'd rank this below their stouts and above everything else. I'd kill to see Fulton give an American Wild Ale a go. I believe this brewery has endless potential.
