A big thanks to James (cavemanlawyer) for this extra. Cheers!

Appearance – Pours into a pint glass with a chocolate brown color and about a half finger of tan head.

Smell – Roasted malts, bittersweet cocoa, slight spices. Not much else.

Taste – Oddly, at first sip this reminds me of SA Holiday Porter (which was one of the first craft beers I had and still enjoy to this day). That said, a nice cocoa twang up front which melds to a subtle nutty roasted malt flavor. Slight caramel at the end.

Mouthfeel – Medium to lighter bodied – wish it was a bit thicker and creamier but overall that is almost why it reminds me of the SA HP since that beer is also lacking just a bit of body. Decent carbonation.

Overall – A decent “Baltic” porter albeit one that could use a bit of work. As stated, I’m partial to this beer and am enjoying it right now.

Flat Tail Big Fin Baltic Porter..seanthornton152 hooked this one up.. very appreciative for a new to me brew and brewery.

Pours a pretty much black brew... short lasting tan head... no real cap, but decent waves of lace as the brew drops in the goblet..

Nose is roasty with nice cocoa and something that I pick up as cinnamon... or maybe some other spice...

Flavor is about right.. but seems lacking in "real" malt category.. instead it seems just whaffs of good malt profile blow in and out... nothing really sticks.

Body is a little thin...carbonation is pretty high making me think overcarbonated porter before anything resembling a Baltic Porter.

This may be my first 5 A's review, as in astringent in every category, if that is possible. I admit this is against my local bias. I want to see a young brewery (started in 2010) local to me succeed. But, this beer needs development. Is there a rescue available?

Paid $4.99 a bomber at Roth's Sunnyslope (I agree with Reidrover the selection has improved), a local grocer chain in the mid-Willamette valley, Oregon.

A - color is as expected, but the gentle pour produced more head than content. Seemed to effervesce like the most exuberant soda. Way too fizzy, interpreted as too astringent.

S- astringent gain the most prominent characteristic. Some roast, dark chocolate, but overpowered by astringency.

T- overpowering astringent bite. Hop bitterness, not unfortunately. No smiles here.

M - more harsh astringency, as in over carbonation.

O - astringent. No gentler way to put it, or putt it, ask Tiger. Unfortunately, everything about this beer is HARSH. I wish it weren't so, but this is the first, and possibly the last, brew from Flat Tail (oxymoron?) I have had. Ready to look them up if I am in need of CO2. Rating this average overall may be generous. A week earlier when I was getting over illness, this would have been a drain pour.

22 oz bottle from Roths Sunnyslope Market ( this store has a hugely expanded micro section). $4.59 Black coulred ale with a nice sized tan head. Tasted grain, dark chocolate, salt water aromas..OK Slightly salty, toasted coconut,semi-dark chocolate tastes..i can recognize this as a "baltic" but not the most expressive one. Mouthfeel is good..soft and rolls. OK beer but could have been better

Bottle opened on 6.18.12.

A - Pours a very dark brown with a very dark tan head that is small and gone quickly.

S - Dark roasty malts and cherry-like.

T - Dark roasted coffee, and done. Some cherry ripe fruit comes out as it warms.

D - Lower carbonation and a heavy body.

O - Roasty and thick. Coffee flavors dominate a bit much here. A good night capper.
