My first taste of Corvallis's Flat Tail Brewing comes from this 22oz bomber of Wetsuite "Schwarzenkolsch Ale". I presume that's a play on Schwarzbier (which is lager, not ale) and Kolsch (which is strictly an ale, but styled like a lager). I enjoy both styles so this promises to be fun.
Anyway, the beer pours very dark brown, nearly black, and forms a medium tan head. Aroma is rich and coffeeish, much more like a regular old American porter than either a schwarzbier/black lager OR a German Kolsch.
Flavor is similarly roasty and coffee tinged. Hopping is pretty delicate for an Oregon microbrewery, and there's a pleasant crispness which I guess is the nod to the Kolsch style. Carbonation is a little bit sharp. But the flavors are good, if simple, and I really enjoy this beer and am quite impressed with Flat Tail so far.

22 oz bomber from Roths Sunnyslope Market in S.Salem $4.79 Black beer with a nice sized thick and creamy lightv tan head. Aroma is subdued but smalls toasty, slightly lactic and smooth chocolate Taste is again toasty, with smooth malty chocolate..finished slighly bitter/toasty Great palate low carbonation and quite smooth. Not a typical Schwarzbier but as the bottle says this is a Schwarzkolsch..odd but likeable
