Appearance: The pour is dark copper with a large tan foamy head that eventually rescinds to a large island covering most of the surface are.
Smell: The nose is extraordinarily phenolic. Other aromas present are sweet caramel, clove, bananas, cherries, blackberries, Belgian yeast, a bit of black pepper, and a tiny hint of Fabreeze from the alcohol.
Taste: As expected, the flavor profile is heavy on phenols, with plenty of molasses. It's not as fruity as it is in the aroma. In place of cherries and blackberries, are figs. There is also a little Hadley's date shake going on here. There's quite a bit of clove, Belgian yeast, black pepper, and a dash of bananas to round it all out.
Mouthfeel: This is medium-bodied and very dry with a sticky finish and lively carbonation.
Drinkability: The alcohol is really only apparent in the nose. I could taste it and I'm barely feeling it. This is a lovely dubbel with great character.

A: Beautiful chestnut body and head, rocky, lasting, lacing. Yes it matters!
S: Liquor like, Cointreau, is the first impression, along with lots of grass, then blend of dark malts with plenty of fruit notes: apple, plum, figs, cherry. Want more of it, still subtle as it warms.
T: Follows the smell, again with the after-dinner drink quality. In this case, savored on the ferry home. Flavorful, malty dark caramel, spice, brown sugar, cocoa, latte, and stout. Sweet, fruit liqueurs, followed by drying, slight bitterness, into a crisp, roasty finish. COMPLEX!
Mouthfeel: Medium-plus w moderate carbonation.
O: Must try. Unusual grassy and liqueur like Belgian. Recommended.
