Best before 2/ 2016

The official Maredsous chalice is made of porcelain, a big chalice of a pale bone color with the Maredsous name on it.
I'll give up the look of this beer in exchange for orthodoxy within this brewery mindset.
It developed a very big, ultra foamy head, creamy, with decent retention.
Seen from above after the head has gone, it is a dark brown beer with patches of brown yeast on top of the remnant light brown foam.

Not much on the nose. Caramel, slight spiciness, malty sweetness, lots of cherry, slight butterscotch, and the very distinctive hoppy spiciness after swirling energetically.

What an assertive flavor, slightly unbalanced, tilting towards sweetness. Caramel, steely malts, strong phenolic medicine-like flavor, yeast spiciness. Just a hint of dark fruits as in raisins, dates, figs and prunes, but, most predominantly, cherry.
This is an oxidized beer, although not to the point of loosing every other original trait of the style, as some other oxidized beers I have encountered. Still, the oxidized flavors are the strongest ones. Lots of nut as in hazelnut or almond, vinous, wine-like booze, wood, wet paper, and again lots of cherry.
The aftertaste is the same flavor, but waning, and it is predominantly sweet although the sensation in your mouth at the end is that of dryness.
Medium to full body, very smooth, nice carbonation .

Interesting beer, the oxidation was in tune with it, although I would love to have one fresher.

Picked up a .75L bottle. Poured into a snifter.

A: Dark brown with hints of red. Thick, fluffy foam with incredible retention and strong lacing. A really good looking beer.

S: Not too strong. Very subtle hints of fruit and yeast.

T: Much stronger than the smell. Dark fruit flavors up front but not overpowering at all. Balanced with caramel and malt flavors at the end. Somewhat sweet. Alcohol is dangerously masked.

M: A bit thinner than I expected given the thick foam that stuck around pretty much the entire time. Refreshing.

O: A really enjoyable, drinkable dubbel. Beautiful appearance and taste. Definitely worth picking up if you have the opportunity.

Serving Type: 330 mL Bottle

A- Pours a clear dark brown that is a beautiful ruby colour when held up to a light source. Topped with a fluffy cream 2 finger head. Incredible retention. Thick rings of lacing.

S- Sweet caramel malts and dark fruit (prune, raisin mainly)

T- Definitive flavour of dark fruits, caramel malt, and a slight spice (I'm thinking coriander). Little bit of a metallic taste on the finish.

M- Creamy medium body and moderate carbonation.

O- Maredsous Brune is a beautiful beer: gorgeous appearance, great aroma, good flavour and a creamy yet refreshing body.

Dark brown amber in color. Thick light brown head, very foamy. Lots of lacing. Smell is caramel and rich malt, with yeasty finish. Taste is sweet, with notes of fruit, spice, and caramel malt. Refreshing mouthfeel that leaves slight warmth.

Color is like iced tea. Taste is like a subtle dark ale. Very well balanced. Not too sweet which I like. No heavy taste of alcohol. Tamarind flavor. Not trying too hard. Enjoyed it very much.

L: gives of a a dark brown color, gives of a small top of head that frankly disolves to quickly , decent lacing on the glas

S: the yeast is very dominant , i also can sense dark fruits like plum, raisin, dates , i also hint banana, caramel malts and burned sugar, a very sweet note on the aroma

T&F : Much as the smell , very first taste, the dark fruits is the first i notice, very sweet notes in the taste , aftertaste is slightly bitter aand i also think the malts make this one exiting .Gives of a immediatelly warnin feeling in the first sip.A very good balanced taste

O: A good dubbel but far from extrordinary, an enjoyable beer and easy drinking. It sure is better belgian beers out there but this sure did the job. I would sure try it again if i get the chance
But i could sure drink this again if i got the chance

On draft into a snifter. A dark clear brown with a thin head and beautiful lacing. A rich malty smell with a smooth, full feel. It's taste has a strong toasted malt flavor, with caramel. Tastes like an "imperial" brown ale. Enjoyed it!

L- Dark brown amber. 1.5 finger tan foam
S- Prune, brown sugar, caramel, banana and a slight hint of yeast
T- Delicious. Same as scent but not overly sweet.
M- smooth and not overly heavy
O- Excellent! One of my top 3 Dubbels. Not overly complex but a nice even flavor from start to finish. I can not taste alcohol whatsoever despite the 8.0% ABV

Maredsous 8
Dubbel- 8% - 330ml Bottle - Best before 07.2017

Appearance: A lot of smoke and hissing upon cracking the bottle. Difficult to see beer properly as I served it in the ceramic goblet (usually only available at the abbey giftshop apparently) that came with it. What I can see is that it has a tan head which doesn’t hang around - poor head retention.

Aroma: Strong yeast aroma for a dubbel and alcohol, backed up by subtle dark fruits and banana.

Taste: As aroma, strong yeast (same as in the tripel and one that I’m not particularly keen on), followed by a strong alcohol burn then you get a very slight bit of dark fruit sweetness that is usually prominent (and very enjoyable) in a dubbel.

Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated and oily, medium-full body.

Overall: The alcohol is not very well hidden in this one and the yeast flavours are overpowering (much the same with the tripel, if my memory serves me correctly). Probably my least favourite Belgian dubbel to date. 5.5 / 10.

Dark amber colour with a modest but steady head of foam. Underwhelming smell of yeast. Luckily, the taste is much better: a rich combination of chocolate, raisins, rum, caramel and prumes. Alcohol is very present as well, which isn't usually a good thing, but it combines very well with the other flavours and gives a warming aftertaste as well. A good dubbel, though this one makes me wonder where the dubbel stops and the quadruple begins. Recommended.

Pours dark brown with a nice lacing. Smells of banana bread and dark fruit. It tastes of plums, raisins, figs. It seems overly strong on the alcohol beer. The carbonation is smooth. Overall it is a decent brune, but doesn't stand out in a country full of good brunes.

Picked up some more Belgians at Carulla, let's give this one a whirl. Popping the top I get a bready almost graham crackers smell of nice fresh malt. Pours to a deep red with big bubble head and a creamy top. On the taste this brew has a zesty up front hopping with a mostly balanced middle. Head stays up throughout the taste which finishes sweet, tart and increasing in sweetness leaving one yearning for another belt. A great Belgian brew tasty and incredibly refreshing

Poured a semi-clear reddish brown body with one finger of thick tan head that remained for a while. Overall impression of appearance is of a fantastic Dubbel, very true to style. Scents of rich malt with chocolate, toast and light caramel notes backed by fruity esters lending dried cherry, prune, plum and apple, with light peppery phenols in the background and light alcohol and hard water notes. Overall impression of flavor is of a nice Dubbel, showcasing the mix of complex malts, esters and phenols of the style. Flavor begins malty showcasing flavors of chocolate, toasted malt, light caramel and esters of prune, dried cherry and apple and light phenols of white pepper. Middle gains a bit more dryness, carrying the same flavors and adding a bit more warming alcohol. Finish is dry with notes of white pepper and warming alcohol mingling with esters of dried cherry and prune, toasted malt and slight chocolate. Aftertaste is white pepper, moderate bitterness and toasted malt. Overall impression of flavor is of a dry Dubbel, pleasant. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy bodied with a drying feel and a chalky feel. Overall impression of mouthfeel is of a dry Dubbel. Overall this is a nice Dubbel. It sticks to the drier side of the style, but is still a malty beer overall. Quite pleasing and worth trying.

Near perfect dubbel. Silky beige head covers murky brown beer. Powerful aroma advertises the higher alcohol content. Taste has elements of molasses, nuts, and roasted grains, but are quickly erased by the burn of the alcohol. Beauty of a beer!

Nice dubbel of brown color and a light beige foam.
Smell isyeasty and of nice sweetness, with notes of milk chocolate, caramel and caramelized rice.
Taste has different moods. Begins sweet and crispy and finishes dry, a bit fruity. Some notes of cola.
This beer has also some roast malt notes that makes it resemble a porter, different for a belgium beer but really nice.
Body and carbonation are well balanced.

Pours a deep clear brown with a slightly ruddy tint to it. The head barely hangs on after pouring but still leaves some nice soapy lacing. The aroma is true to form, with nice dark fruit and deep caramel sweetness, a little hint of spices, and a little hint of alcohol. The taste is even bigger than the aroma and full of all the aroma characteristics. The body is a nice weight, maybe not quite as full feeling as others but great all the same with just a little hit of carbonation on the finish.

Pours dark brown, leaving a great lace which stayed on the glass throughout the drink..loved the rich and nutty taste as it paired nice with a large slice of Lasagna.. Awesome experience until the check; $10.00 a pint! Can't say it was that good.

Had on tap. Big caramel and grain nose with traces of anise and dark dried fruit. Brilliant brown under a very creamy, persistent light tan cap. The palate is creamy and laced with dark dried fruit with faint hints of cola and fruit cake. Finishes with a light bitter accent. Medium full body and medium carbonation.

From a 25.4 oz bottle into a pint glass. Tremendous foamy brown/tan head threatens to overflow. Nice slow fade with huge amounts of clingy lace and clumpy head left behind. Clear chestnut color with few precipitating bubbles. Nose of sugary sweet malt, dark fruits, and a bit of boozy alcohol. Mouth is thin and easy going with little carbonation in evidence. Tastes of bready malt, definite clean alcohol presence on the finish. Hints of bitterness. Overall: Great appearance and nose. Flavor was a bit underwhelming however I have a feeling I had a rather old bottle.

Gorgeous veiled copper color. Extra foamy head with residues. Good lacing.

Pleasant sweet aromas of fruits and nutty caramel. Perfectly spiced and floral hints.

Sweet flavor of bread and fruits. Caramel like feeling with gentle spices. Very slight alcohol aftertaste.

A warming slick body with ample prickly carbonation. Very delicate and balanced finish for a strong beer.

Very fresh, well crafted, full flavored. Overall a true joy to drink!
