A-Pours a clearer straw color. I expected this to look pretty and it didn't disappoint. It is adorned with a clean, tight, white head. Light level-rings mark my pace down the chalice.

S-Neatened up Belgian yeast. Soft fruity esters. A bit of old-time spice. Some pale sweetness. Simple but enticing and buttoned up.

T-Flavor brought forth more sweetness. It is still very influenced by that signature Duvel yeastiness. Soft, grassy hops. Grainy and spicy on the finish.

M-Very drinkable. Crisp and quenching with uplifting carbonation. My pour disappeared very quickly.

O-A tasty Belgian Pale that doesn't go overboard in any one area. I found the $9 pour to be somewhat ridiculous but that's the bar's fault. I will take the traditional Duvel over this every time but I haven't stumbled upon this on draft before and trust the brand enough to spend the money.

(served in a Duvel tulip)

A: extremely clear, extremely pale-golden liquid... beautiful cottony, spongy white foam - takes forever to recede, maintains a thin, pillowy cap till the end... laces like a champ

S: sugar-cookie dough... mellow flowery hops... mild corn-mealy, moonshine-like phenolics

T: silken, lightly-toasted, graham cracker-y malt... delicately spicy hop and phenolic overtones... sort of background tinting of bright citrus zest... no one flavor really stands out - all are delicate and finely balanced

M: lager-light in body, crisp.... quite dry... only a faint glow of warmth

O: this is what I tell every customer it is - a mellower, more 'easy-drinking' version of Duvel (as if Duvel Sr. is laborious to drink!).... most casual or less-adventurous beer drinkers really dig it, while some feel it's too restrained... pleases most though

Tap

Pours a light gold, slight haze and fine pillowy white head at about an inch. Slow dissipation.

Smells of coriander, wheat, and grassy malts. Fresh and lightly bitter.

Light grassy malts with a mild light bitterness over coriander and lemon citrus.

Full body with light tingly carbonation on the tongue.

A nice lighter Belgian ale that goes down easy and is pretty satisfying. Not as good as the standard Duvel, but worth trying.

250ml sample bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Pale golden color with a mild haze. Foamy white head holds at a quarter inch. Clumpy and foamy lacing sticks everywhere.

S: Pilsner malt and cracker. Dry herbal and grassy hop kick. Earthy and chalky yeast, lightly phenolic with a distinct black pepper scent.

T: Cracker and hints of doughy pilsner malt. Bone dry. Hint of orange zest. Hops lay in grassy and dry earthy/herbal tastes. Tropical fruits. Chalky yeast, peppery. Dry finish, cracker malt evaporates and leaves a lingering oily and spicy hop bite.

M: Medium-light in body. Creamy and very airy. Medium carbonation has a prickling, scrubbing action. Mild hop astringency. Crisp and very drinkable.

O: So they tweaked the Duvel recipe for draught. I guess I kind of get it, the bottled version of duvel does not lend itself to the tap lines, mainly due to its strength. So they take the abv down a little, lighten the body to make it more sessionable, and make it noticeably more hoppy for good measure (this is America after all). It's still a very good beer, just not the Duvel I know and love. It feels just a little dumbed down in all respects compared to its bottled counterpart. The real problem is the name. Putting 'Single' on the bottle in a Belgian context will lead people to believe that this is modeled after an abbey single. Certainly not the case at 6.8% abv. Maybe they should just make a beer more akin to an abbey single for draught. The market is trending in that direction these days anyway, demand for true session offerings is on the rise.
