The Maredsous series is brewed by Moortgat, the same fine folks who brewed the Duvel, a top
beer in the world, and therefore I have strong expectations of this series. For this tasting,
I used my Hoegaarden Grand Cru tall tulip goblet; reason being that the Maredsous glasses
were also in the "tall tulip" style. The Maredsous 6 pours out with a golden orange color
tone with a generous lingering head (I deliberately sloshed it a little) As the foam settles,
it gives of a familiar scent of Belgian yeast and malt with slight hops aroma. As I tasted
it, the yeasty and malty taste jumped in avidly and this contributes to a wonderful medium to
full bodied taste. The Maredsous 6 was pretty mellow unlike many Belgian Blondes at it's
level and is relatively smooth and drinkable. The after taste was also strong and slightly
fruity with subtle fresh fruit tones analagous to maybe peach (I am running a conjecture
here). Sadly, when I was through two third of the glass, the after taste had a slight
mustiness which was a pretty unexpected; perhaps it is just that bottle and at least the
first two third was a good experience. I like it for the strong pronounced taste of yeast
and malt (stronger than most Belgian ales) but there is still a certain plain-ness about the
Maredsous 6. Belgian ale drinkers probably understand what I am driving at. I tasted no
spices at all (perhaps an apt use of selected spices would be a good improvement). Thus
all in all, it is still a very good beer; not great but I will call this an 8.5.

A: Golden, a bit of sediment, somewhat hazy, with a white head.

S: Fruity Belgian yeast esters dominate the nose, and it smells very tasty.

T: Those same fruity notes typical of Belgian yeast, delicious!

M: Medium bodied and smooth.

O: This was maybe my first Belgian ale, and I think it's a great introduction to Belgian ales. It's not imposing to look at with tons of sediment, nor is it an ugly quad. It doesn't have a very high abv, it tastes good, very fruit-forward and typical of the esters of Belgian yeast. Recommended, especially if you have never had a Belgian ale before.
