Bottled October 2013.

A: Pours a very dark brown. Very large and frothy light brown head. Head retention is excellent as it slowly fades away. Top-notch lacing; heavy and thick and ever-present.

S: Really nice bittersweet chocolate aroma. Sweet grains backing it up, oatmeal I assume. Swear I get coffee even though there's no coffee in this. Not really getting a ton of coconut, mainly it's a chocolate oatmeal stout from the aroma. Mildly earthy. Very pleasant regardless.

T: Now there's the coconut. Lots of nice toasted coconut up front with a perfect backing of sweet oatmeal and bittersweet chocolate. Perfect balance and melding of flavors. Mild earthy coconut with lots of bitter cocoa in the aftertaste. This beer is stupid good.

M: Medium bodied, very very smooth and creamy.

O: Whoa. Great oatmeal stout. Addition of cocoa and coconut puts it over the time. It is mellow and smooth and creamy and so easy drinking. At the same time there is surprisingly great strength and complexity for 6.8%. Flavors compliment each other nicely and are well balanced. Amazing brew by Wormtown.

A- Dark nutty brown, medium lacing no legs.

S- Oatmeal malty backbone, with smallest amounts of roasty chocolate and lesser of vanilla

T- Funky aftertaste; probably my lack of non ba oatmeal stout drinking. Oatmeal, and then follows the nose with the smallest amount of chocolate and vanilla in the back.

M- Light, but that is to be expected. Medium carb, but def present down the throat.

O- A pretty fair oatmeal stout. There are some things to improve on here with the presence of chocolate and vanilla, and making this one a bit smoother and thicker.

Reviewing Norm from Wormtown Brewing Company out of Worcester, Massachusetts. Norm is an oatmeal stout brewed with cacao nibs and toasted coconut.

Score: 84

Fall 2013 vintage bottle served in a Hopslam snifter and enjoyed on 02/06/14.

Appearance: Pours a dark chocolate color with less than a finger of tan head off the pour. Solid, but unspectacular lacing and retention. 3.75/5

Smell: On the colder side, the aroma is very milky. Coconut milk with a hint of chocolate is the best characterization. As it warms up, however, the milkiness fades substantially and a roastiness comes through as the chocolate character also amplifies. By room temperature, the beer exudes the aroma of a freshly baked chocolate covered toasted coconut macaroon. At no point in the nose complex, but it's quite effective in its simplicity as it warms up. 4.75/5

Taste: The taste, unfortunately, has an opposite development as the aroma. At first, right out of the fridge, its a nice and creamy blend of toasted coconut and milk chocolate. However, as it warms up, it starts to taste a bit blander, with a 2% milk flavor upfront and a distinct metallic flavor in the finish. Like the nose, the taste is not very complex. 3/5

Mouthfeel: Super creamy mouthfeel, with a good viscosity. The carbonation level here is nice, although maybe a touch overdone. Nice balance overall on the flavor profile. 4.25/5

Overall: A nice beer that smells downright amazing as it sits out for a little bit, but falls apart taste-wise the more that it breathes and warms. I like the concept of this beer, and the nose and initial flavor are proof that it has a lot of potential, but the execution was lackluster and the metallic finish was a real turn off. My other bottle, which may have been from a different batch, was much worse and tasted like 2% milk and metal right out of the gate. Even at the nice price point I likely will not seek this one out again unless they can fix whatever is making this bottle have a metallic flavor.

Cost: $6 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

22 oz bomber into a pint glass.

Others have given accurate descriptions of appearance and aroma, so I'll briefly say that the color of the foamy head is a wonderful light tan that darkens near the edge of the glass. Pour it slowly; the head is very persistent.

The flavor of this beer is amazing. I've never tasted coconut in a stout before this, and I find it is a perfect complement to the dark roastiness of the malt. I think there's juuust a bit too much coconut in there, but it's by no means overpowering. I could happily drown in this stout.
