If I were to guess, I'd bet I haven't had this beer since my last trip to Bamberg. With all the Bamberg talk in the Germany forums, had to grab a bottle when I saw it.

.5l brown bottle with odd coding on the label, notches at numerals 4, 8, and 16.

A -- Pours clear, pale gold -- a shade darker than straw, with a white, meringue head that lasts long and leaves great lacing.

S -- Spicy hops with light DMS and mild malts back.

T -- Bready malts up front with lightly spicy hops following, blending into a light citrus character in the finish. Aftertaste is spicy, bitter hops.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a light body and crisp finish.

O -- Other than the nose being somewhat light, this is just what I'd expect in a German Pils. Crisper and more bitter than a Helles, smooth and refreshing in flavor and body. A great, non-smoky beer from Bamberg.

Swingtop brown bottle with a green label and a Bayerisches cap. Recent takeover?

A completely clear golden color, Kaiserdom develops a craggy little white head that manages pretty good retention at about half a finger and is sticky enough to leave a fair amount of lacing in small patches and plenty of spotting.
Saaz hops don't hold back in this pils. It's plenty grassy and herbal with lots of the skunky aroma, but not in an unpleasant way. It just seems natural and something like standard for the style, though without the heft American brewers have put to it. The flavor's much the same, though I get a little more power from the nose and could use more hops for the stronger, more heavily-hopped German style.
Certainly light and crisp, the body is no surprise. It's not as clean as it could be, which isn't as easy as it seems. It does get a little grainy, but fits the style otherwise.

Clear pale golden color. Poured a two finger head with medium retention.
Predominant aroma of grassy hops and hints of malt.
Taste follows nose with a good bitterness and a spicy and refreshing flavor from its grassy hops with some malt sweetness. Aftertaste is mildly dry and bitter.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Decent given it is faithful to the style and it has a little more spicy than average but still not impressive.

Appearance - Pours a clear, pale golden color with an inch thick, soapy looking head that dissipates quickly. Has a thin lacing.

Smell - Very malty, grains, and buttery biscuits.

Taste - Identical to the smell.. Very sweet and malty with grains, very bready, buttery, and has spicy herbal hops. Leaves a spicy bitterness on your tongue in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with high carbonation.

Overall - Much spicier than the pilseners I'm used to.. I'm guessing they use different hops than the average. It's good, but I wouldn't want to drink this all night.

Purchased at the Tesco supermarket; BB 01/2013, served chilled in a 500ml weizen glass.

A: very light straw in colour, coming with a light fluffy white head and a rather fizzy body.
S: doughy scent of yeastiness and very fine sour fruitiness and floral hoppiness spring to mind; maltiness is very very timid, lightly grainy and overall just like what is required of it in the Pilsener style.
T: lightly grainy, or, bready even, somewhat watery on the palate, followed by a rather thin and short-lived floral hop bitterness to balance the equally light sour fruitiness. A mildly grainy touch of malts lingers at the end of each sip, leaving no trace of a decent dry palate one might usually associate with this beer style.
M&D: well carbonated but not sharp on the palate, the body is light and the flavour is definitely very timid in every sense. Not impressive.

Pilsener
Kaiserdom Privatbrauerei Bamberg
Style: German Pilsener
ABV: 4.80 %

LOOK: Pint sized bottle. Pours a clear straw yellow with fine clarity and lacing foam down the glass. Carbonation bubbles rising quickly to the surface, looks like a standard pils.

SMELL: Bready, biscuity malt profile, a touch of butter, and grassy, noble hops.

TASTE: Clean malt flavor up front with more biscuit, buttered bread and a faint sweetness. Grassy, tea like herbal hops emerge and provide a slight spiciness. Crackery, mildly bitter, easy drinking pilsener.

FEEL: Light bodied, spot on carbonation, finishes more or less clean.

OVERALL: A true pilsener from Germany, easy drinking, and pretty much standard in every way.

A: The beer is crystal clear light golden yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high dense white head that died down, consistently leaving a thin head covering the surface and a coating of bubbles down the sides of the glass.
S: There are light aromas of grassy hops in the nose.
T: The taste has a light to moderate amount of bitterness, but this prominently stands out in front of notes of grassy hops and slight hints of malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied and very clean on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. The finish is very clean and leaves your mouth a bit dry, longing for another sip.
O: I enjoyed this pilsner because it’s rather light-bodied and easy to drink but the bitterness and clean mouthfeel really take center stage. However, it would have been nicer to have some more malty flavors in the taste.

A 500ml brown bottle with a BB of Dec 2012.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A clear pale-golden colour with plentiful fine carbonation. Forms a small head of white foam that subsides rapidly. Aroma of light malt with hints of grain and stewed hops, along with weak notes of noble hops and some overcooked veg.

Tastes of light malt with a dry finish. Notes of mild stewed hops, some overcooked veg and a whiff of noble hop aroma. A faint sweetness. Subtle bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is light, crisp and tingly, but watery. Aftertaste of stewed hops/veg.

Meh - as German pilsners go this is sub-par. A relatively bland flavour with insufficient hop aroma or depth. Fairly clean and thirst-quenching, but doesn't hold your interest. Bamberg has a pedigree for exceptional beers; however this is not one of them. No need to seek it out.

Random cooler find recently. Poured the .5l bottle into a mug with the same volume. Pours a pale gold with racing streams of champagne carbonation. White foam with creamy surface texture, good retention with a dripping halo of lace.

Skunky out of the bottle at first, but pleasantly grassy and herbal as it warms. Lightly floral from the noble hops, with signature dry cracker notes from the pils malt.

Taste is clean and grainy, some mild bitterness and a light metallic note. Pleasant mild bitterness in the aftertaste. Light, well carbed, and relatively clean. Overall ok, but pretty middle of the road. Worth trying but I'll stick with my favorites.

Found this recently at a Russian grocery here in town. Poured into 10oz Pilsener glass. Poured a bright, clear, clean light golden yellow color with less than 1/4 inch of white head that had moderate retention and low lacing.

The aroma was good, about what you'd expect from a nice Pils, grain, some gentle hops, a touch of yeast. the beer also had a slight bit of underlying sweetness in the nose. On the tongue, the beer had a lot of the same features, and was typically crisp. There was just a small touch of skunk in the middle of the tongue, but not enough to ruin the rest of the flavors.

The body was pretty average as well, crisp and mostly clean, with just a bit of stickiness at the finish. Drinkability was good, you could pour a couple of these down with no trouble. Overall, a nice, but typical, take on the style. Worth the $2 i paid for it, and worth grabbing if you see it, but I probably wouldn't seek it out.

....and I didn't even think Kaiserdom was sold in the US. See, I learned something today. Out of the 500 ml format, on to the beer:

Cascades of bubbles rise throughout the beer, which is a ligter golden color with a frothy inch thick head. Rings of lace around the glass and great head retention justifies a bump in the score. It has a reasonable aroma. It's clean, somewhat hoppy, has a little grassiness and hay to it.

Light, crisp, and clean as expected. It's also more bitter than I thought it would be. It is refreshing and easy to drink, though the flavor is one dimensional. The hops provide much of the flavor in the form of grass. Maybe some floral notes as well. Some lingering bitterness in the aftertaste.

A middle of the pack German pilsner. That isn't a completely bad thing, as there are some good German pilsners out on the market. The bottle seems relatively fresh, so at least it has that going for it.

Labeled a pilsener, but more in line with a generic Euro pils, brown bottle 500ml size the Kaiserdom label boasting anno 1718. I'm sure this is mass produced beer at this point. Pours a very pale yellow color into my Spaten glass, forms a brillian white head with fine speckled lacing. Aroma borders between a hint of skunkiness with some strange metallic notes as well, a bit of faint pale biscuit malts and off putting grain character. Flavors are pretty clean and unoffensive a bit of lively sweetness rolls in with some pale biscuit malt sweetness and lingering herbal earthy hops, skunk free on the palate. Mouthfeel is light bordering watery with enough sweetness to create a crisp beer drinking experience. Carbonation is mellow on the palate, a very limited scheme as far as hop bitterness goes. Overall a decent mass produced Euro pils from Germany, the label states Bavaria in this case (Bamberg).

Picked up a .5L bottle at Euro Market. Impressive, despite the brown glass, this lager is still skunked. After a good 15 minutes or so, the aroma cleared up to reveal a standard lightly toasted white bread character with a hint of spicy hops. Those hops come out more in the peppery, dry finish, while the barley is hardly noticeable. It's a shame this beer has been mishandled, otherwise it's a refreshing hoppy lager worthy of a good summer session.

Lemony yellow body with a dozen or so bubble clouds.

The nose is filled with wheat, more so than a lot of weisbier and a subtle hint of hops.

Malts all the way with flavour almost straying into sweetness but stopping before a hoppy very slight bitter tang.

Very light mouthfeel and lively, could see this being highly efficient at banishing thirst with a bit of a kick of flavour.

Alright for a lager.

Pours a clear, transparent straw color. White fluffy head slowly dissipates. Some lacing, more than I expected.

Smells of hops and grass, faint sweet notes in the background. Standard pils.

Tastes of hops, some pine cone hints, a hint of sweetness in the middle, and a mild bitter hops finish. A little hop after taste.

Mouthfeel is crisp and light, with some carbonation. A little thin, but a very easy drinking beer.

Certainly a nice example of the style. I would have another.
