22 oz hand-labeled bottle poured into a snifter
7.6% ABV

A - Dark, dark brown, only when Ulfberht is held up to the light do chocolaty brown highlights emerge shining below the halo of tan foam. The frothy pile leaves nice dots of lace on the glass, further adding to it's somewhat sinister appearance.

S - Soft smoke wafts from the snifter, gently billowing into the nostrils imparting a woody, earthy tone that's far more subdued than either campfire or "bacon"; not unlike the lingering aroma of charred meat-smoking chips the day after. Dry cocoa and baker's chocolate develop with rather transparent notes of raisin and prune juice but as the beer warms it's smoke notes more closely resemble a slightly wood-fire-singed pizza crust.

T - Ulfberht's restrained smoke aroma becomes even more distant in flavor, drifting into the background further but still bringing a fair amount of wood character to the beer which works wonderfully with it's elevated fruit and chocolate notes. Mellow chocolate covered raisin finishes out, glossing over the tongue with elegance.

M - Despite the beer's inherent fuller bodied nature, Ulfberht is smooth and creamy with a delicately earthy and somewhat spicy-dry finish that perfectly caps off it's drinkability!

O - Seductively smooth, Ulfberht, a name that doesn't roll off the tongue quite as elegantly, puts a very nice spin on the Baltic Porter style with it's inclusion of smoked malt, gently adding puffs of charred wood to the dark and complex-yet-reserved beer.

On tap at Vintage in a pint glass.

Poured a very dark brown - close to black. Medium, tannish, head with decent retention and lacing. Bubbles danced up the side of the glass.

The aroma gave me that sense of smokiness...almost meaty in nature. I could also detect the roasty malts used. Maybe even a hint of sweetness. Think fruity. Very complex...A lot going on here.

The taste had chocolate on the front end, and the smoke factor didn't take away from the rest of the beer and overpower it by any means.

Full-bodied and very smooth. Leaning toward "chewy', but not quite.

This was one of my favorite beers in 2013.

Ulfberht was a name giving to Viking swords used in Scandinavia in the 1000's. The unique, high quality, steel that was used remained unmatched until the Industrial Revolution hit.

Looking forward to the possibility of this beer being forged again later this year!
