64 oz growler poured into a Nonic.
6.6% ABV

A - Short-lived cascading results in a dense pile of dark mocha foam atop a perfectly black beer. As the bubbles descend tiny dots of lace remain clinging to the glass.

S - Big and bold, Scaredy Cat's black aroma is rich with roasted malts and all the glorious connotations that go along with it; bitter chocolate and cocoa, dark roast coffee, and thick molasses. Burnt but smooth, the oatmeal rounds the nose out for a loud but welcoming presence.

T - Nutty overtones start the cocoa-and-chocolate-rich beer but burnt characteristics take over almost immediately; burnt coffee next to burnt pancakes with molasses. Brown sugar sweetness and oatmeal finish out, rounding out the otherwise sinister, heavily roasted beer.

M - Oatmeal aids in keeping this acridly bitter, heavily roasted beer from being a little too dark with mild smoothness while leveling out the full body for a more mellow finish that lingers with dryness.

O - Nearing an almost imperial stout-level roast, Scaredy Cat loads in the flavor without the wallop of alcohol. Pushing the boundaries of an oatmeal stout, the heavy roast challenges the smooth characteristics of oatmeal at every level for a beer that's no where near as wimpy as the name might make it out to be.

Served in a pint glass at the brew pub on 26 Mar 2011.

Pours midnight black with a tan quickly vanishing head.

Aroma is strong chocolate, coffee with a hint of molasses.

Flavor is overly bitter and reminiscent of very dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel is nice and thick yet the overly bitter nature really took this from an A- to a B beer for me. Would be much more drinkable if it had less of the dark chocolate. Worth a taste, but not a pint.

Sampled 10/9/2010 at the brewpub.

Pours dark brown/black, biege head, low retention but good lacing.

Aroma is chocolate and roast with a hint of pine.

Flavor is way too bitter for an oatmeal stout. Roast, chocolate, and oats are all present with the chocolate being the strongest.

Medium/heavy body and medium carbonation. would be more drinkable if it wasn't so bitter.

Tick.
