Pours deep brown with ruby hues. The head doesn't last long. Minimal trailing lace slides down the glass.

The smell is of brown sugar, cotton candy, caramelized banana and a hint of sugarplum.

The taste is of sweet medium to dark malt, sugar, cotton candy/bubblegum, raisins (hint of black cherry as it warms). The sweetness is balanced by a semi-dry finish.

It doesn't have quite the same carbonation as some of the classics from Belgium, but does the job well enough. It does have a smoothness in the texture.

A nice, complex interpretation of the style! Well-done!

22 oz bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
9.2% ABV, Vintage 2010

A - Deep tawny mahogany colored, Dedication remains a clear beer that pours with an effervescent deep ivory head, which disappears into a ring of tight bubbles above the lifeless beer leaving no trace of lacing on the tulip.

S - Rounded out by age, Dedication's aroma revolves less around spicy Belgian yeast character and more around the components of it's time spent in the bottle, though surprisingly not oxidized or past it's prime. Deep nuances of dark fruit come as no surprise from the dubbel; raisin, crushed prune, and black cherry skin encircle the faint clay and earthy black pepper-like nose the yeast gives off. Damp maduro tobacco leaf and sherry really take the cake until this beer warms and opens up, releasing more of the Belgian influence and turning into a wonderfully complex and subtle nose.

T - Big malt character offers rich Munich-like breadiness and Vienna toast with a light tickle of molasses as the flavor progresses into more Belgian-like nuances. A sprinkle of cracked pepper with gobs of grey clay have their place as yeast esters but the bigger component is the rich dark fruitiness found in the nose. Raisin and tart cherry skin work seamlessly with strong sherry notes and a finish of smooth tobacco.

M - Dedication's big, robust flavor profile lends itself perfectly to the heavier-drinking Belgian dubbel beers but Vintage's attempt, as great as it is elsewhere, really hurts in mouthfeel; it's thin-feeling, well-carbonated body drinking closer to a low ABV light-bodied beer more than a hearty and rich dubbel. Alcohol dryness finishes out with lingering spicy fruit flavor for a nice finish that needs some unfermentables left behind for heft.

O - It's quite impressive to experience a 3-year-old dubbel with such character exhibiting very few unwanted traits of extended age, though the persistent sherry profile may or may not be an attribute of said aging. After all, it is a 9.2% dubbel! All things considered, despite Dedication's lack of a round, robust body, the beer shows exceptional yeast nuances; dark fruit, spice notes, and alcohol warmth. In the end, it's cohesive, flavorful, and very good all around.

On-tap at Vintage. Served in a cheesy chalice.

A: Pours a clearish dark red with a small beige head.

S: Smells bring raisins, sharp booze, phenolic, syrupy cherry.

T: Yeasty, sweet cherry and grape, clean solvent character, dry, mild earthy bitterness.

M: Medium-bodied with light carbonation.

O: Not a very good dubbel.

On tap at Vintage's downtown outpost.
Served in an extremely heavy goblet with a minimal amount of light tan head. No lacing. Clear, dark brown. Aroma is all malt. Raisin, toffee and lots of dark caramel malt. Taste is more of the same. Very sweet dark caramel malt. A hint of chocolate. Molasses, raisin and bit of a woodsy-earthiness on the back end. Maybe a bit of yeast-derived spice, but not much. Heavier bodied. Lower carbonation. A bit harsh and abrasive in the mouth quite uncommon among Belgian-made dubbels. A decent beer if not an overly impressive one.

Tried this one at the brewery.

Poured a darker brownish amber color with a bit of head and good lacing on it.

Aroma was caramel malt with some pepper or spice coming through with a bit of alcohol as well.

Taste was much like the smell. A bit of spice to this one along with some alcohol on the finish.

Medium bodied beer. I had this one during dinner so I didn't drink it too fast.

Overall a good beer. I enjoyed it.
