Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge is a Flemish Sour Ale, red in color with a beguiling balance of malty sweetness and acidic sharpness. It is made from spontaneously fermented and barrel-aged beer of at least 18 months in age. The beer is cooled overnight in a large, shallow metal vessel called a coolship and then fermented and aged in large oak foudres which are made in France and assembled on-site at Bockor.

I tried this beer off the tapper at Tee Nee Thai Cuisine in San Jose, California. It poured a clear amber with thin white head that left a spotty lace. The scent had bold sour yeasty notes. The taste very sour leaning and not easy to drink with overpowering vinegar sour presence. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with subtle carbonation. Overall it was not a good beer for me....sorry.

330ml bottle into a flute, just for fun. Bottled 5/18/21, so almost 18 months old.

Looks spectacular in the flute. Beautiful crystal clear dark wine colored body. Good streams of carbonation. Small off white head persists throughout, spots of lacing.

Sour fruit aroma.

On tasting, very sour and very tart. Dark fruit notes, berries. Sweetness comes through once in a while, but the sour wont let it hang around.

Mouth medium, finish very sour.

Overall, stays well clear of vinegar, but still a bit too sour for this palate.

It’s always nice to find a Flanders Red or Brown out in the wild. Even though this is a classic example of the style, I haven’t gotten a chance go try it until now. So when they pop up of course I have to jump on it. Let’s see what this old school beer is all about

Pours a cloudy reddish brown with a finger of off white head that fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing

It’s pretty standard stuff in the nose, but it has a nice acidic touch that I like. I’m picking up on aromas of black cherry, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, apple skin, lemon juice, and light toast

Wow, it pops a lot more in taste, really giving a full and sour feel. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting sour cherry, brown sugar, crabapple, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, dark bread, and light toasted oak. The swallow brings notes of red wine vinegar, sour cherry, sharp oak, brown sugar, apple skin, and light toast

A medium body pairs with aggressive carbonation, resulting in a sharp and sour beer. Finishes bone dry and refreshing

I actually really enjoyed this one, more than I had expected to. I’d for sure get more

Bottle
L-clear dark brown with a hint of ruby at the glass edges. 1F tan head fades rapidly
S-there’s some underlying bread with a sharp bright mineral tone predominating
T-sour fruits with some underlying bread. Certainly sour but not overwhelming. More unified flavor than is typical for the style
F-medium bodied, mild to moderate carbonation
O-true to its style, and stands out for a balanced flavor that is consistent sip to sip. A very pleasant sour.

One of the most delightful beers ever. Well worth it, despite the price, even just to try once.

Served in a snifter glass from the bottle.

Appearance: Red amber color with heavy bubbles to the body creating an off-white head rising maybe 6 or 7mm off the body of the brew.

Smell: Light bland yeast aroma which feels like a warm bread yet dissipates super quickly.

Taste: Sweet yet sour brew consisting of sour cherries and slight apple with a heavy yeast after taste.

Mouth: Bubbly with a full carbontion and very sticky body which would cleanse your palates regardless of what you're eating.

Overall: Good brew, literally frank it to kill the smoke taste from my mouth from the cigar i just had. Regardless a must grab if you ever crave a sour. Salud!

Burt orange in color with a modest head. Very pretty aroma: red wine vinegar, butter, sweet malt & oak earthiness. Very mild tartness that increases substantially as it warms. Very nice balance of flavors,: vinegar, butter, cherries, malt, oak, a hint of earthy goodness & vanilla. Medium viscosity, smooth a butter with plenty of carbonation. An excellent thirst quencher, just let it warm up a bit.

330 ml bottle, as Cuvée des Jacobins Rouge, brewed by Brouwerij Bockor. BB date 26.08.14. From Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. ABV is 5.5%. Deep reddish brown colour, moderate off-white head. Aroma of oak, red wine, red wine vinegar and brettanomyces / farmhouse. Sweet and sour flavour, notes of red wine vinegar, sour cherries and lemon. Don’t think I’ll buy this one again.

L: Pours an deep amber with good clarity. A gentle pour gives a finger of fine off white head with decent retention. After five minutes or so the head has fallen to a 3 mm ring around the circumference of the glass with some splotchy thin patches of head occupying the interior of the glass. As the beer recedes in the glass the head leaves light spotty lacing.

S: I get plums, cherries, some green apples, a bit of red wine vinegar, and light notes of earthy and oaky funk. As it warms I also get a nice note of tobacco and a very light vanilla presence.

T: Cherries, a bit of green apple, some woody funk, a hint of dark earth, a light vanilla note appears near the bottom third of the glass after it has warmed a bit, and a nice sour finish that is fairly strong but not overpowering.

F: Medium-full body with medium carbonation. A vinous mouthfeel with a slightly sticky and dry finish.

O: This is some good stuff. I am just beginning to explore the style so I may have to revisit this one after I have had the chance to sample a bit more authentic Belgian versions. I really like this one. It was well crafted with complexity and balance. Highly recommended!
