Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #50 (March 2011):

English in strength yet hopped like an American! So we won’t judge this beer on its size ... one brewery’s Pale Ale is anoth- er’s IPA, though they are aiming at the “single” strength here. Lacing draws a glance, golden hue draws even more atten- tion with its clarity. Fresh-cut grass and mild orange peel nose from the hops; toasted crackers and yeast are the backing. Crisp light body with a snap. Hops are up front, keeping bitterness and flavor in line. Thinner biscuity and yeast flavors coat the palate and a citric tone from the hops sets in. Dry ending with more hops than malt to talk about. Extreme ses- sion IPA or just an English cross-hopper IPA? Either way, good drinking, and the hops did deem it an IPA in the end.

Poured a pale golden color with a decent amount of head and ok lacing.

Smell is very very nice. Citrusy and hoppy collide for a great aroma.

Taste is very good as well. Really good going down. Pretty spicy hop flavor throughout.

Mouthfeel is fairly light and refreshing. Easy to drink beer that went down smooth.

Overall a good quality IPA. I'd love to drink this again!

Had on tap.

A- Pours a golden yellow color. One finger white head shows medium retention. Nice streaky and spotty lacing all down the sides of the glass.

S- Lots of citrus hops in the aroma. Light pale malts come through from time to time. Light peppery notes here and there. This is citrus forward in the hops. Light herbal hops in the backing I suppose. Good smelling overall.

T- Lots of citrus and bitter hops in the front end of this beer. There is a big grain body on this that gets masked for the most part from the hops. I light bitterness in the tail end of the beer. Pretty much hops from start to finish.

M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation was good for the style. Citrus hops left on the palate. Grainy aftertaste with some alcohol. Medium drying on the palate from the alcohol being there. Hop forward beer that balances itself in that matter.

D- This is a super drinkable IPA. The low ABV on this makes it a drinker for the entire night if need be. I was shocked to be honest at the ABV and the overall taste. A good flagship IPA for any brewery for that matter.

A nostalgic story about the name of this beer, named after a difficult climbing route in KY's Red River Gorge, where I also grew up hiking as a kid.

Bright high clarity orange, thin layer of white foam that recedes fast to a skim, a collar of lace around the edges.

Pungent C-hop aroma at first, very orangey, resiny, with a touch of dankness. Seems to taper off in intensity fairly soon though, but what's there is nice.

Flavorful, some dry resiny pine and citrus peel hop character, medium bitterness, dry grassy finish. Clean and light bodied, which is what the brewer says they were going for. Touches of caramel, not overly sweet, the bitterness rolls through early and lingers into the finish. Very easy to drink, and the bomber disappears quickly. Tasty and well put together, would drink again.

A- pours a hazy blonde with thick white head.

S- very floral aroma backed by a caramel sweetness.

T- intense bitterness dominates with only a slight reprieve granted by the caramel malts.

Mf- light bodied and maybe slightly over carbonated.

A better than average brew, plus when you buy a pint figure eight donates to a local charity.

Poured a very light copper, pretty much golden, color, with some decent head and lacing. Nice clean and crisp scent, just a bit of bitterness in the nose. Nice clean and crisp tate, with some slight citrus hops in; nice maltiness but not very bitter. Went down very smooth, it's quite refreshing. I could see this being classified as a blonde ale, too, with it's minimal hop taste, but it's still quite good and definitely worth trying. A great hop-gateway beer. (On tap at Tomlinson Tap Room.)

look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber color capped by two fingers of foam; decent retention and a fair webbing of lace is left behind

Smell: Biscuity and citrusy, with grapefruit and tropical fruit tones

Taste: Just a hint of biscuity malt and then the grapefruit and tropical fruit flavors take over, dominating the middle and the finish

Mouthfeel: Light bodied (somewhat aqueous) with moderate carbonation

Overall: Love a 4% beer packed with a big hop bill, particularly when it is citrusy rather than just a bitter assault

Thanks, jonallen, for the opportunity

"A session beer for hopheads," or similar, F8's marketing says for this one. I'm NOT a hophead (malthead 4-eva!), but, we were trying a full flight of F8's beers, so this was a part of it.

The technical characteristics are well-covered by the other reviews - they agree with each other, and I agree with them, so I shall not cut and paste those.

Basically - if you aren't usually a hophead, or don't want the higher ABV usually associated with high-hop beers, you will probably like this one. I was surprised. You might be too.

22oz. bottle poured into a pint glass

Appearance : dark straw yellow in color. A thin white head appears after a vigorous pour. A small amount of lacing lingers aroud for a couple mins.

Smell : very fragrant bouquet of typical high end IPAs. The aromas are very inviting . Citrus and pine abound.

Taste : lots of flavor in this brew. Can't believe this beer is only 4% abv . At 100 ibu this beer really delivers a hop bomb to my mouth. Strong hop flavors linger for a long time after each sip. This beer is very well balanced . Tastes so good I can't help drinking it quickly.

Mouthfeel : light to medium body with light carbonation

Overall : this beer has really surprised me. Finally I found a hop forward beer that I can drink all day. At 4% abv this beer is low on alcohol and high on flavor. I have passed this beer up several times and I'm glad I finally chose to try it. This beer is worth seeking out because it has all the flavor of a dipa without the high abv.
