Hoping to improve on St. Pauli Girl regular, I decided to give this a shot. It was fairly cheap at the time, so why not?
I will start by saying this is immediately more enjoyable than the pilsener, but it still leaves a tinge of disappointment when it comes to dunkel biers.
This tastes like a slightly better version of Schell's Dark.
A sort of underdone version of a munich dunkel, I would maybe hope for a bit more flavor. Special Dark is sweeter than I would expect, and lacks the proper malting to make it a great beer. With that said, it is not a bad beer -- rather a dark beer you might be able to drink on a summer's day, like Shiner Bock.
Mouthfeel seemed to be the highlight for me. Decent amount of heft...and it just felt authentically German to me, having been there before.
