This here rye barleywine was brewed for Papago's 10th anniversary and aged in whiskey barrels. Enjoyed in a snifter from the tap at Papago.

Ochre, clouded to opacity. Some light is able to brighten the hazy brew up a bit, but it can hardly penetrate. One finger of silky, dense sand-colored head slowly descends, leaving thick spatters of lace on the walls.

Light aroma. Caramel, floral hops, grapefruit, lemon and vanilla ice cream.

This barleywine drinks like an abrasive creamsicle — a creamsicle made with orange peel. It’s very vanilla-heavy from the oak. Mixed in are hints of lemon and rye spice. Caramel adds sweetness but can't cancel out the highly abrasive hops and heavy bitterness.

Bubbles gently massage the tongue in the soft, whipped medium body. Breaks into silky fizz as it moves. Alcohol is hidden behind burly bitterness and rye zest.

This brew, though weird, is oddly appropriate to mark a decade of Papago — it almost tastes like a double Orange Blossom. Good for an experimental taste, but it’s too odd and abrasive for me.

(On draught at Papago). Pours a cloudy caramel color with off-white head. Aroma has spice, caramel notes and some slight booze. Taste is bitter with some spice. Not much sweetness from the malt is noticeable. Medium bodied with a creamy texture. Bitter, spicy finish. Ok, but doesn’t live up to the description. Needs a little more sweetness.

"10th Anniversary Unfiltered Rye Barleywine that was aged for 8 months in High West Rye Whiskey Barrels. The barrels added a smooth complex texture to the beer with a nice balance of oak, caramel and rye whiskey notes."

Brewed at Oak Creek Brewery.

Sampled 3/4/2011 at Papago.

Pours murky brown, beige head, nice lacing, no retention.

Aroma is oak (lots of it), whiskey, caramel, bread, and spices. A bit too intense to enjoy.

Flavor is very oaky with a healthy dose of whiskey and a caramel. The rye must be a major ingredient as it is quite noticeable even with the barrel flavors dominating the beer. A bit too sweet and heavy. Fairly bready too.

Body is heavy despite the medium carbonation. Drinkable, not very good but not all that bad either.
