On tap at the brewpub in Charlottetown, enjoyed with some brown bag fish and chips.

Poured into Gahan sampler glass. Chestnut ruby-amber brew, clear, good half inch of foam that recedes to a thick ring with swirls and eddies. Some lacing.

Nose is nutty, with mild spiciness and roasted malt. Caramel and dark fruit as well.

Solid brown ale that is firmly in the English camp, with good toasted nuttiness and mild fruit and spices to compliment. Hops are minimal. Drier finish, mild carbonation.

Good, sturdy brown ale that is well-crafted. Nothing out of the ordinary, but certainly worth the effort to seek out. One of their better brews, for certain.

500ml bottle. Not sure why they changed the name from 'Iron Horse' to 'Iron Bridge', but everything else seems identical, save the 5.3% ABV. Thanks once again to the Alberta rep for the sample bottle.

This beer pours a crystal clear, dark ruddy amber hue, with three fingers of poofy, densely foamy, and thus somewhat creamy off-white head, which leaves a decent spectrum of spackled lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of semi-sweet nutty malt - almonds and roasted chestnuts - a subtle coffee and dark chocolate coffee shop goodness, and earthy, mildly leafy hops. The taste is chalky caramel malt, with a thin, now indistinct nuttiness, a bit of dry ash, bittersweet cocoa, and more understated earthy, somewhat weedy hops.

The carbonation is again rather subtle and unobtrusive, the body a pleasantly plump medium weight, and mostly smooth, but for a mild pithy detracting nothingness. It finishes off-dry, the nutty graininess large and in charge, the other esters readily wafting off, and the hops holding fast in their earth mother steadfastness.

A pleasant enough brown ale, with a more British (duh) bent than any particular American sensibility, so the hops are at a minimum, with the most noticeable asset being the strong nutty maltiness. Not a lot going on here to engender repeat visits, beyond a simple, static generality for the style, one that could be interpreted either way, given prolonged exposure, I'm sure.

Really enjoyed this with dinner. Nice dark colour, great toffee taste with nice roasted malted flavours. Very drinkable would order it again and recommend others to give it a try. A good dark ale with nice character and not just another plain english ale.

Iron Horse Brown Ale

The Gahan House, based in Charlottetown, PEI

Appearance - 1/2 finger of yellowish white head. Deep amber-brown, well carbonated. Head dissipated quickly, however it left a whisper of ivory-on-ebony spattering.

Smell - Sweet, hints of caramel and brown sugar. Delicate tones of cinnamon and spice. Some light fragrances of maple as well.

Taste - Starting off, you’re hit with extravagant holiday-esque spices. The caramel smell transfers into the taste as well, with obvious tones of of dark candy. These piquancies are further complimented by the afore-mentioned cinnamon-spice undertones. Decently complex and well-built.

Mouthfeel - Fairly chewy, sits heavily. Aches to be swallowed.

Overview - I’ve had quite a few brown ales in my time, and the Iron Horse is definitely noteworthy. It’s bouquet is well-constructed and reminds me distantly of a holiday season. Three and a Half out of Five Stars.

Very smooth and rich, malty without a noticeable hop present. Definitely English style, not American.

Poured from a 500mL bottle into a pint glass. Purchased at the brewery.

Pours a muddy brown body with little head, lacing and retention.

Aromas are sweet with toffee and caramel. On the tongue is a slightly sweet caramel-toffee, somewhat grainy taste, chocolate and roastyness on the finish. Light, slightly watery body with medium-high carbonation.

Easy drinker, standard brown ale.. Nothing super but not bad.

500ml brown bottle with pry off cap poured in a dimpled mug. Thanks to my buddy Scott for the beer!

Dark brown with ruby red highlights. Off-white head with a thin cap. Some lacing down the sides.

Aroma is malty and nutty with hints of chocolate.

Malty goodness through and through. Hints of nuts, tobacco, chocolate.

Full bodied with minimal carbonation. Smooth drinking with lots of flavour.

If you like a good malty brew, grab one of these. You won't be disappointed!

On tap at The Gahan House as part of the sampler.
Pours a fairly clear dark brown with ruby highlights and a small off white cap.
Aromas of rich caramel and chocolate with little to no hop.
The flavor is a little sweet with caramel and chocolate and just enough earthy hop to balance.
I enjoyed this its a pretty decent brown.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a Dogfish Head Signature Glass. Thanks to my buddy Chris for bringing this back from Prince Edward Island!

A: Deep mahogany brown color. Clear as far as I can tell. Aggressive pour leads to an off white 1 finger head that disappears pretty quickly.

S: Not a big nose but certainly not bad. I can tell that there are a lot of nice flavors laying in wait. From chocolate malts, to some subtle grassy hops to a touch of bready yeast. It's all there, just not all up in yo face.

T: Very nice balance of malt and hops with a big presence of molasses, some honey and a touch of wood flavor somewhere. Certainly not wood aged but somewhere in there it wants to be. Very nice malty beer with lots of subtle nuances dancing about.

M: Nice thick creamy English Brown feel. Continuously reaching for the glass for yet another swig. Perfectly carbonated, nice big finish.

O: The best Gahan offering I've had yet. This is one delicious brown ale and one that I will be seeking out yet again. Bravo, Gahan...nice work!
