The Bahamas is full of breathtaking sights and, if you're a lager lover, High Rock is yet another highlight of the islands. Brilliant and glossy golden in colour, it has a sparkling complexion and impressive and indefinite head retention. Postcard perfect.

Bottling weak lager in green glass bottles is like selling peaches in plastic bags - packaging that can't safeguard the fruit is sure to make it bruise, break, suffocate and go moldy. That smells exactly like what's happened here: green glass can't protect beer from harmful ultraviolet light the way brown glass does. The result is a distinctly skunky smell.

And it was already bad enough the beer have a corn bread-like flavour that could spark a Bobby Flay 'throwdown'. The tastes of grits, corn pudding, corn relish, and creamed corn are almost enough to qualify it as authentic southern comfort food. Hardly any actual malt can be appreciated amidst all this adjunct flavour.

If it weren't for the skunking, this review could have been summed up in three characters: Billy Bee honey. Far from quenching, this lager is intensely sweet and light-bodied; its industrial aura and intentional blandness give it an uncanny resemblance in both taste and texture to the cheapest honey Walmart has to offer.

Brewers in hot, sunny climates are not doing their beer any favour putting it in green glass bottles; it'd be like dairy producers not keeping their milk refrigerated. High Rock Lager could be half-decent but I'll never know, not so long as every sample out there is skunked. It's time the folks at Bahamian Brewery consider a change...

Look: It pours golden and quick clear. It has a white head with low head retention.

Smell: There is some grainy sweetness and a bit of a corn element.

Taste: It is grainy sweet with virtually little hop flavor that might be spicy. It does have a corn element in the flavor.

Feel: It has a medium light body.

Overall, not much in aromas or flavors which is a good beach drink.

12oz green glass bottle. Poured out a crystal clear, straw-yellow color with a small, white head of foam. It left little to no lacing on the glass. It smelled of caramel, corn and floral notes. Sweet caramel taste with cracker, breads and a very mild bitterness.

In the Bahamas. Pours very pale gold. Touch of foam. Lager nose, very mild. Smooth taste, mild, straight lager. Simple island beer, but not too much going on.
