Got this from my beer club, and found out it's near impossible to find in America up till very recently.. My club got this from the overstock of Michael Jackson's beer club warehouse.

Took me a solid ten minutes to get this thing open, the cork would not budge. I resorted to using a vise grip to get it open, and even then it was difficult. Not a good start...

Pours a heavy dark brown with a nice thick mahogany head that leaves strong lacing all around. Smells of roasted barley, cocoa, and fresh espresso...

A great chocolate front end with a obvious nod to heavily roasted barley and a strong overall bitter mesquite flavor. Great notes that finish with an almost spicy malt flavor that lingers.
What's surprising is how refreshing this is, and how well this could work as a session beer if one felt like working through a few glasses of something this intensely smokey.
The mouthfeel here is great with a soft rolling of flavors and a perfect level of spark from the carbonation.

A solid brew all around, if i could find another bottle of this i'll definitely be down for another trip through the murk.

330 ml bottle into pint glass, no bottle dating. Pours nearly pitch black color with a 1 finger dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of dark chocolate, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, coffee, molasses, light herbal, and roast/bready earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted/bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, light molasses, light herbal, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of sharp roasted/earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, light molasses, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice balance, robustness, and complexity of roasted/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; with a crisp malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming presence after the finish. Overall this is an excellent dry stout style. All around great balance and complexity of roast/bready malt and moderate earthy hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

11.2 oz glass was poured into a nonic.

Appearance: A two finger mocha head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a dark brown black color with no clarity or vision of bubbles.

Smell: Milk chocolate, roasted coffee, earthy, and some caramel.

Taste: Same as above with smoke and mild bitterness. Very tasty.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied, a bit dry, tingly bitterness, smoke, and medium carbonation.

Overall: Probably one of the tastiest Irish stouts around. Pretty solid and spot on. These bottles are just a bit hard to find here in Boston.

(bottle with no freshness date - poured into a 12oz Sam Smith's pint-ish glass)

A: silky-glisten-y, khaki-colored head... dark, motor-oil brown liquid... foam stays as a solid cap for a good while, some scattered strands of lace

S: huge punch of dark fruity esters, later most-definitely reminiscent of straight fig.... moderate roasted barley in support and perhaps some mild earthy hops.... over-arching sense of oxidation

T: the fig carries through strong, with a nip of sweetness... decent bit oxidized here?... in-funk-ted.... moderate-plus, long-lasting roastiness and bitterness... a lil acidic bite on the end... the semi-acrid roast and bitter qualities are central to the taste, with just enough malt to round it out

M: right around medium-bodied, but it scrapes dry and leaves a hours-old coffee-like tangy acidity

O: actually not too shabby, but potentially an old bottle and/or somewhat poorly handled/cared-for

Opaque and coal black with a thick, chunky, light tan head resting on top; clinging, foamy rings all down the glass. Milk Duds with roasted grains and a slight sourness in the aroma; baker's chocolate aroma; cocoa. Rich dark malt flavors; nice hop bitterness fading in at the end. Heavy bodied; semi-sweet mouthfeel.

A heavenly, robust stout. Thick and chewy without an overbearing sweetness with a smooth, soothing hop bitterness undertone throughout. I really like the overall character of this beer but also like the unique pull-tab bottle cap! Ah, but it's the beer's flavor and feel the makes this one a keeper. I hope to see this one around on a regular basis.

Listed as 5.7% ABV.

A - Looks great for a stout deep dark black with no escape-able light and just a 1/4 of deep mocha head that settles to a thick lace ring.
S - A touch sour with some chocolate, anise, and molasses. Has sort of a cherry smell so I hope its not infected.
T - Thankfully the flavor is more rich with chalky roasts, mild ash, and a touch of chocolate in the finish. It does have some cherry notes even faint which may indicate infection but minimally its not offensive.
M - Light to medium bodied, slick aftertaste. Very dry.

Overall I am not sure how I got a mildly infected bottle but I enjoyed it the same. It could be the bottle was old marked down from 5 bucks to $3.50 or the kick as ring bottle opener (why can't more beers have this?) Regardless I still enjoyed it immensely
