Poured into a Blanche de Namur small pint glass. Pours a medium orange-copper amber with a big three finger light khaki head with good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma of biscuit and bready malt, a little earthy with hints of aromatic root spices. Flavor is biscuit malt with hints of toast and caramel; a rapidly developing tartness and astingency in the background that takes away form the malty flavors. Light to medium bodied with sharp, peppery carbonation. This seems to be a bit sharper and more tart than the 2012 I had a few years ago, which makes me think it may be slightly compromised. Flavor is still good, I like the Enlgihs style malts used by Foggy Noggin, but this is a bit unbalanced. I like the maltier, more classic styles from this brewery better.

Appearance is a dark shade of coppery amber. Thin head but a fine-grained carbonation that provides a nice creamy tingle on the tongue. Lighter body with a refreshing sudsy mouthfeel.
Tangy with a pleasant cedar and mushroom flavor. Malty but not very sweet. A range of roasted flavors with some fruity hops. There is some bitterness at the finish. It's all pervasively nutty and even what I describe as musty, but in a woodsy way I have always liked. There is not so much of the buttery taste in this example, which makes it maybe more approachable. More hoppy and bitter than the typical Old Ales, but more drinkable as well.
If you're interested in trying this interesting style of beer, this one is a good place to start. It's way out of the usual popular and exuberant American categories, but a style I hope to see more interpretations of. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Special Brews in Lynnwood.

I had this on-tap in a pint glass at Special Brews in Lynnwood, WA.
Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with a moderate haze and a thin layer of ivory foam. An attractive brew.
Smell: bready and a little biscuity with lots of dry malt character. Not particularly hoppy, but it doesn't need to be.
Taste: bready and a little bit tart with a rich malt quality. There's a little bit of prickliness along with a moderate bitterness, with a little bit of earthy hop character. Kind of like a really good amber ale.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a good level of well-integrated carbonation yielding a very good creaminess. I can dig it.
Overall: I generally prefer my old ales on the stronger and fruitier side, but this is still a solid and tasty brew.
