Stopped into JoBoy's on my way to the Sutter's Fall Cask Ale Festival to get some lunch. The road it is on, Main Street, is currently under construction so getting there was pretty fun. Finally got to the rear parking lot and walked through the ridiculously tiny walk way to arrive at the front door.

Upon entering I realized that this place is much bigger than I thought it was. A small seating area at the front of the place, the bar area, and a few dining rooms make up the space. I sat at the bar and was greeted by a very nice bartender. I ordered a 10mo. RIS and it was pretty good. I noticed a few other things on the tap list that I would have liked to try but I had to save room for the festival. I took a look at the menu and I decided on the brisket platter with mac n cheese, baked beans, and corn bread. I thug the BBQ was excellent, as were the beans, but the mac n cheese was good and I didn't much care for the corn bread. Prices were a little high for my liking. I thought the food was about right but the beer prices were a little high.

Overall I really enjoyed my trip to JoBoy's and I will definitely return the next time I am in the area.

This was my first visit to JoBoy's and I was pleasantly surprised. It is located in an old hotel/restaurant building in the heart of Manheim and has a warm, cozy tavern feeling.

The beers were good, 7 on tap, my favorites being Rasberry Summer Ale, Porter, and Manheim Red. I ordered all of them as a sampler and they cost $2 each for a total of $14 for 7 beers, which is about the priciest sampler i have run across recently. Most establishments will offer a deal if you get them all, but not here.

They are known for their southern style barbeque and i got a sample of pork, chicken, and beef barbeque in the form of 3 sliders, which cost about $11. They sure were tasty.

The service was great, though admittedly I was there in the middle of weekday when they weren't too busy. The bartender is very helpful and friendly and took me to the back to see the small Sabco brewing system. Although it makes good beer, it is much undersized for the number of people they get here. Signs on the bar indicated "No Growler Fills". I hear the owners may be looking for a larger place.

I would go back again, just for the barbeque itself, though I hear they can get really busy evenings and weekends.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is wood. Its everywhere. I like wood, so I like the atmosphere. The building is old and feels well worn and loved rather than rundown.

They had 6 beers on-tap which was nice. I tried the Hefe first and was impressed. The IPA was a bit off this visit, but other reviewers seemed to like it. I visited shortly after they opened and enjoyed the stout they had on at the time. There are lots of good beer options in the area, so for me this place is all about BBQ. And its damn good. For $12 Jes got a ridiculously massive pile of pulled pork with two generously sized side dishes. I tried some and it was quite good, with the Memphis style sauce in particular. My $21 rack of ribs was absolutely superb. Fall off the bone tender and delicious. My only complaint about the food is the overly vinegary cole slaw. No problem though, I'll just get something else next time. And there will be a next time.

Overall this is a nice addition to the local beer scene. I'm anxious to try some more of their beer and I'm looking forward to significantly shortening my life span one rack of ribs at a time.

As with other reviewers, it took me a little maneuvering to figure out where to park, & then the skinny walkway was a little foreboding at first. I was honestly a little put-off with the accessibility difficulties, but that vanished when I got inside. Warm, cozy bar & dining area, with corner tables & benches next to the roughly 10-seater bar. Dark wood, very comfortable & intimate.

I liked the beer selection, posted very conspicuously behind the bar. Nice variety, with a good mix of standards & some less ubiquitous offerings (the black IPA & smoked Scotch ale both caught my eye). Ordered a sampler - noticed a few off-flavors with a few of the beers, but minor enough to be overlooked. Again, the Hopblack & Smoked Scottish were real standouts, I'd definitely order them again.

I have some self-imposed limitations with barbecue, as I don't eat beef or pork, but the chicken sandwich & sauce were great. As were the Caroline slaw, baked beans, & pecan pie I ordered. My only critique here is the portion sizes - there was a little too much space on the plate, & it's only a compliment to the food that I wanted more. But the quality is right up there.

Prices were very reasonable & the sample sizes were substantial. Our server was great, a kindly lady who was very attentive, responsive, & friendly - she gets big points in my book.

Great little place overall, I'd definitely go back, & I saw plenty more on the menu I'd love to try.

Stupid turnpike I've gotten to know from end to end, all too well. Mile markers mapped for food of daily bread in a glass, and I'm in the lunching hours. I'm all about the easy off, easy (back) on and this is just that. And 6 miles down the road to Manheim, anyway...

On the strip in town, and you just missed it, but you're going to swing around the block and park out back anyway. Through the tight alleyway and you're up front again, and in. Smallish place, or seemingly so. Off to the right and back some, a straight gray splotchy marble piece topped bar with a wood trim and seating for 10 on backed leather stools. I do love marble bars, they're always nice and cool when I lay my face on them. Brick wall barback of gold, with shelves holding logo'd pint glasses over mirrored panels on center and a signed DogFishHead tin to one side. Wood counter space unit, drawers & cupboard space below, and more glassware hanging from a slot wood piece over the bar. On a thing their side of the bar, little sample paddles of four for when, you know, beer. Baby decanters on the bar with American flags waving from, and a (get your own) popcorn machine on my end that I never got to.

3 square tables behind me sharing a common bench, 2 more across the floor, slight bar counter space past there, and that's pretty much the room. Panel walls of gold over brown below with a trim split. The décor a mix of Nascar (flaggings along the bar and a Stanley tracksuit on a hangerin the corner), and vintage Manheim; old black & white pics of town, a framed Manheim '39 sentinel (newspaper of ancientness), and previous tenant Summy House pieces including a display of their tavern licenses from the late 1800's and a vintage stained glass piece. Baby flatscreen in the corner of the bar and a larger one up front. Lights on spinny fans and recessed over the bar.

Rear room with yellow walls done in like a swirled plaster effect over wood lowers, and wall mounted lamps & Nascar pieces. 3 booths on the far wall and 6 tables riddled about. And through to a larger side room with nearly a dozen tables in rows. The walls are decorated with farm tools & quiltings, and they've got nice glass front cupboards on both ends with diplomas, vintage cameras, glassware and other things to look at.

A single tower with 5 taps and standalone duos to both sides, although for all that, they only have 2 beers on just now. I'm glad they're getting good press and the place is busy but not if it's going to take most of the beer out of the equation that is me. Wait, lemme check, yes, I have time for 2 beers. Patriot Ale, 4.4%, smooth blonde, lightly fruity, hoppy finish; and the Darkside Ale American Stout, 7.5%, sturdy, nice roastiness, and goes all licorice as it warms, in a good way. The better of the two. No guest taps as they now make enough beer in their 1 barrel system out back, except, you know, now. I need to revisit when there's more beer here.

So, they do que, it's true. Having not lunched or cared, I did the smoked sampler platter, which gave you pulled pork, chicken, beef brisket, and a ½ rack of (5) ribs. Ribs were done in a sauce, and fall off the bone wonderful, and the pulled pork was also very good. Good food, they smoke on pecan. BBQ sauce & a vinegar sauce available, I never got to 'em. The sampler came with 2 sides, I opted for the bottomless baked beans & Carolina slaw. Seriously, the slaw was money.

3 weeks later on a revisit, this time there are 5 beers up, so I did a sampler of (duh) 5. The aforementioned Patriot Ale; Manheim Red, 5.2%, a bit murky, caramel sweet maltiness, good hoppiness; Darkside Ale American Porter, 5.75%, creamy, oaty maybe; American IPA, 6.5%, Cascade, Nugget, Citra, it's a solid IPA; Belgian Dubbel, 7.0%, it's a really good dubbel, not too sweet, light in color, starts sweet & finishes dry. The Red & the IPA were good, the Belgian Dubbel was excellent.

Started with a bowl of Boy's blazin' chili. What? Yes, hold the jalos but I'll take the onions & shredded cheese, please, thank you (manners are important). Good heat and fall apart meat chunks of goodness. Came paired with a big chunk of cornbread, which I did eat. And the JoBoy's tacos, 3 of them and your choice of, I did my trio of 1 of each (chicken, pork, beef) in soft flour tortillas with salsa, and I even accepted the guac. Side of tortilla chips and sour cream, too. I was playing soft flour tortilla roulette as I didn't know which was which was which. Most dengerous, this life I lead. The pork one was excellent, really they were all very good.

Very nice folks. Good BBQ, they take it quite seriously and well they should. Owner Jeff was behind the bar, a breather while brewing twice a day. Damn! And I like what I've had, 'specially that dubbel. This'll be one to watch.

What a gem!

Truly amazing genuine NC BBQ in a small PA town - and great brews to boot. This little place right on 72 in Manheim is a treasure!

We had lunch there today - pulled pork and beef brisket. This is real southern BBQ - done the long slow way. You couldn't ask for better.

The beers are also top rate - we had the Dubbel and the Red. Both were well done. The sample of the Porter and IPA showed that this guy sure knows how to brew!

Well done! We will have to come back with friends and family for more great food and beer! It's well worth the hour plus drive for this BBQ and beer.

Went to JoBoys on 7/24/10 with the family and some friends. The place itself was very nice, very large old house with lots of nice woodwork and nice country decor. Very nice atmosphere and a plus for us, it is kid friendly.

Now to the food and beer. The food is AMAZING! I had the mini sliders (pork, beef brisket, chicken) with a side of fries. My husband had the rack of ribs with two sides (collard greens and beans) and the "loaded " fries. Wow, lots of food here. They also have a kids menu that comes with a chocolate chip cookie!
We were with three other couples plus a few kids and there was not one complaint about the food or beer. Everyone left with a full tummy and said they would go back again-soon!

They had five beers to offer that night. The American IPA, Manheim Red, Patriot Ale, Darkside Brown Porter and a German Hefeweizen. All very, very fresh. The IPA was my favorite, it was very citrusy and smooth. Almost had a cask feel to it. I think it was because it was so fresh. The Manheim Red was also very tasty.

The thing that amazed me the most was the brewing system. The owner took us to the "room" where he brews and literally it is as big as my bedroom closet! (No wait, I think my closet is bigger by a few feet)! Wonder why he said he brews every day and some days he brews two times a day! I am thinking as more and more people find out about this place he is going to have to upgrade to keep up with the demand. I told him if I lived a little closer I would be glad to come help in out every once in a while. He said he has quite a few people that show up on a whim and help him brew.

All in all, I think this is a great place to go and have some good "comfort" food as well as some nice beers. Whooo Hoooo!!!!

A mid-Saturday visit with the whole akorsak pack.

A: The brewpub is located at the the Summy House where a long-ago brewpub was once housed. The inside, with the bar up front and dining in the back, is nicely restored. The bar especially seems like a nice place to whittle away a few hours. We were seated in the backroom, where NASCAR decorations run rampant. The bar has a framed selection of liquor license for old bars (possibly a historical trail of Summy House bars). The backroom has a bit of an old world slant, sloping towards the bar, but not enough to make things roll off of the table.

Quality: We were greeted by Jeff Harless on entrance. He brought some popcorn for the akorsak kits and stopped by regularly to see how the beer and food were (both were excellent for the record). Erica, our waitress, was efficient and friendly with the kits too.

Service: See above. Both Jeff and Erica were great. They inadvertently forgot to return my credit card after the meal. They emailed me and stashed it in the safe before we realized and returned. Thanks, Jo, for that one!

Selection: Five beers were one: a blonde, a red, an IPA, a porter and a Scotch ale. Three were better than average and two were average. All were good, especially for such a small system. It also seems like the early problems related to running out of beer are no more.

Food: Barbeque!!! I had the slider sampler, brisket, pork and chicken. They were enhanced by a vinegary Eastern Carolina BBQ sauce that had an awesome bite. The Western Carolina (ketchup-based) BBQ went great with fries. I was bowled over by the BBQ and beans.

If you live in the Central PA area, JoBoy's is a must. A barbeque joint that makes it's own beer? Fantastic!

What a great place in the old Summy House, just off the square in Manheim, PA.

Inviting entrance, bar and tables. Nice lighting. Very friendly owners and wait staff.

They specialize in pit BBQ from their former lives as competition barbequers and it shows. I had the pork BBQ and my friend had the beef briscuit. It was just delicious and tender as can be. The rub was excellent and the sauce is served on the side, which IMHO, it doesn't need. The pepper/vinegar coleslaw was excellent as were their homecut fries.

There were 4 of their own brews on tap. I had a Manheim Red and their IPA. Both were good but I'll give higher marks to the red.

We had a very nice, informative converstation with one of the owners and the whole experience was very enjoyable.

You can park in the back and walk through a covered alley to the front entrance.

Stopped in on Saturday roughly 3:45ish. Was promptly greeted by the owner who told us we had the choice of the late lunch menu or the supper menu would be available in 15 minutes. We ordered some drinks and awaited the 4:00 menu. There is a comfy feel to this place, it is clean and has a home-like feel with the wooden benches, lighting and antique tavern licenses dating back to the 1880's hanging behind glass on the wall. Bar area has around a dozen seats, some tables and booths upfront and more seating to the rear. On tap was 3/4 of their offerings: manheim red, darkside ale and american ipa. The owner was very open and friendly, we talked about the food, the beer, the process of each and a bit of personals/history. He clearly is serious about his BBQ and you can tell when you smell and taste it.

I opted for the BBQ sampler, it came out as a delicious plate of meats: ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork and pulled chicken. Others in the group had pulled pork platters and chili. The owner invited us back to see his brewing apparatus which was a sabco. Having to brew everyday to keep up with the demand is interesting, I'm sure it won't be long until they need to upgrade.

They don't piss around here, when they warn you that something is hot, it is hot. As we were leaving I overheard a conversation at the bar regarding a plate of nachos that included habaneros...yikes.

Overall it was a really good experience. I look forward to going back and trying some of the other offerings on the menu.

I stopped in for a pint on Friday at Joboy's for my second visit. I wasn't able to get a full sample on the opening day April 1st. I ordered the Manheim red after being seated and was able to talk to the owners for a while. I like the beers but I noticed something about them that was similar so I asked the owner and he mentioned they used ringwood yeast. I don't think that in itself is bad per se, but it is a yeast that needs special treatment from what I have heard.

I like the establishment it has a comfortable feel and is clean inside with lots of space and they have about 10 seats for the bar area - there are about 5 tables in the front room near the bar. In the back they have booths and more seating - the place is nicely light without being too bright and they have blues playing on the stereo which seems to fit the southern/barbecue theme. I believe the selection is good with a red, dark and ipa on but have heard about some selections running out which at the time I was there only 3/4 of the tap lines were on. I enjoyed talking with the owners and the rest of the staff seems friendly too.

I find the quality and the food to be very good, they focus on the details and the food is served at the appropriate temperature. I think the portions are large and although everything is fresh they prices are slightly high - I had 2 pints and chili cheese fries for around $20. I think limiting the menu to barbecue is ok, but perhaps a random vegetarian item wouldn't hurt. I was pleased with my visit and hope to return in again to see what else they put on tap.

I've been there twice - once for lunch before they had their serving license and once for dinner a week after the grand opening. I had the beef brisket sandwich the first time, and the pork sandwich the second time. The sandwiches are too expensive in my opinion. And, the pork sandwich that I had was a little thin on meat and was served on what was clearly a store-bought white-bread type of a roll. Not impressive. They only thing the sandwiches come with are a tablespoon sized portion of crunchy coleslaw (fresh and tasty). They were only offering one beer at the time I was there, dark alley imperial stout I think it was called. It was served at something like 60 degrees, and was unremarkable. I may go back, but I'll call ahead and see if they're actually serving beer before I do. They've run completely out of beer several times since they've opened.

had lunch there on 4.22.10. the place is welcoming when you first walk in. I wouldn't say there is a theme per se, but a woody atomsphere and a bit dark.

I sat at the bar at had their Manheim Red, which wasn't bad. That was the only beer on tap. Being a small start up it will be a bit of time before they can keep multiple taps running, understandable.

I ordered a beef brisket sandwich (which comes with slaw) and a side of fries (extra). The sandwich was super delicious, which I expected given their success in bbq competitions. The menu is a bit limited, but hopefully that grows as they grow.

My biggest beef with this place is the pricing. They only offer three beers, yet they are all different prices. I understand different ingredients go into each, but dollar cost average it out and sell them at one price. Until they start brewing some off the wall complex belgian ales, make them all one price.

As for the food, my sandwich was $9. WAY OVERPRICED for what you get. There wasn't that much meat on it and the side of slaw was underportioned. In addition the side of fries cost me $2.75 - for that money I would expect a full basket of fries, instead all I got was not even a handful sitting next to my sandwich. If I am going go pay $9 for a sandwich, it better be hefty and include the fries.

All in all - a decent place. The folks are friendly, but probably won't go running back until some of the value issues get ironed out.

Visited on opening day 4/1/10. In the old Sumney House Hotel on the Manheim Pike in downtown Manheim.

Interior has a homey feel. Lots of wood paneling, wood bar, wood tables and chair...WOOD! A lot like an old country store. Nice, appropriate, background music of bluegrass and American folk music.

They don't even have their official serving license yet so they couldn't sell pints and were offering samples of two (Manheim Red and Darkside Brown) or their initial 4 beers.

The folks were very friendly and seemingly happy to serve us. They talked to us about the BBQ, the beers and even took us back to see the smokers and their brewery---a 1/2 barrel Sabco Brew Magic system.

The BBQ--well....it really is DAMN good! I had the pulled pork sandwich and I have to tell you I am a true Q aficionado and this may have been the moistest, tastiest pulled pork I have EVER had. I barley needed to use the authentic Carolina vinegar sauce. It was accompanied with a zippy pepper slaw and very nice and super (almost pomme fritte like) crispy fries.

They also do beef brisket (next time) and chicken. Numerous side are also available. I am sure I will return to explore the menu more thoroughly.

I am not going to knock them on the beer yet....they really aren't truly up and running yet so. The beers were decent and certainly serviceable but nothing ground breaking. I am looking forward to trying their American IPA which is made with Cascade, Centennial and Citra hops...sounds promising.

Overall I feel that JoBoy's will be a BBQ joint that serves house made beers, not a brewpub that serves BBQ. If this is the outcome I am OK with that. This area could us a quality BBQ joint that doesn't serve BMC swill!
