Presentation: Poured into a pint glass from a growler purchased at Green's off Piney Grove in Columbia, SC.

A: Slightly cloudy, dark amber with a 1 1/2+ finger, fluffy off-white head. Thick lacing is left behind all the way down the glass.

S: Nice mix of hops. Mostly citrus with undertones of pine and mildly sweet malts.

T&M: HOPS abound, up front. Fades to a beautifully balanced malt/hop fest. Citrus and mild pine, just like the smell. This is smooth and just great tasting IPA for the 7.5% ABV.

This IPA is highly drinkable for it's cost and quality. Not a completely original taste, but very high quality. Just about on par with a DIPA, but at a nice economical IPA. The manufacturer representative was at the filling and mentioned that this current batch measured in at 83 IBU's, instead of their original 75 IBU claim on the website.

Orange amber body with a moderate cream white head, which had some staying power before giving way to a nice lace on the glass. Tons of hops mostly of the piney and citric variety. Hints of the sweet malt base that is nicely balanced. Its always nice with a powerful, complex hop aroma is matched in the flavor. This is a wonderful ipa. The malt base is the perfect canvas for the piney and grapefruit hops to tingle the tongue. Clean and crisp. Medium body. Skull Coast hit the mark with this one. Goes down great even with all those hops assaulting your mouth. Great showing at 7%.

Very expressive multi-hop contingency here, and a darn good beer to boot! The pour is copper with a decent creamy head and nice lacing. Aromas abound with grapefruit, pine and citrus hops. The flavor is a well-balanced offering of grapefruit, pine caramel and multiple, multiple hop contingencies. It leaves a wonderful medium embodiment in the finish, and satiates the palate in a crisp way. Very full and complex, this beer satisfies nicely. This brew lingers around for a while, in that "satisfying" way.

Rounding out my top 5 IPAs is our SC local Maelstrom IPA. Ah, gotta love these guys. I really like the not subtle title bestowed on this one. Pours a cloudy copper brew with a huge head. Aroma = hops! It’s not a pungent, stinging blast, but rather a remarkable depth of hop character with a surprisingly fresh quality. It’s pretty close to opening up a baggy of hop flowers and taking a whiff. Huge piney notes come out with scents of citrus and grapefruit. The brew is super smooth by way of flavor. It’s hoppy with plenty of flavor and just a small presence of sweet malt to balance things out a bit. While this is becoming increasingly difficult to find -- due to supply/demand issues -- if you see it on-tap, pull out your credit card and stay awhile.

A: Got this beer on-tap at Oak Barrel Tavern. Had an orange color and a cloudy texture. There was a small amount of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Epic lacing.

S: A nice, super-hoppy aroma. Also had some citrus in it as well.

T: As it was with the smell, the taste had a big hops presence in it, but there was also a piney quality that couldn't be overlooked. Had some citrus thrown in for good measure. A good, solid flavor.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This beer almost has more in common with a DIPA than a regular American IPA. Still, it's very flavorful, well made and easy to drink.

Pours a nice hazy orange/copper color with a frothy off white head. Aroma is very hoppy, with grapefruit, citrus, and tropcial fruit along with a small amount of sweet malts. Flavor is again super hoppy, with loads of grapefruit, and the tropical fruit. Nice use of the 3 C's here with some other additions for the slight fruit. Its a hop bomb for sure, with just a small amount of sweet malts in the taste. The body is medium with a dry mouthfeel. Overall a really nice american west coast IPA on the east coast!

Had this too at Foster's Pub in Mt. Pleasant. Skull Coast had a tap takeover so I got to try them all. Let me start off by saying, DAMN! The appearance is a cloudy dark orange with a serious head and sticky lacing all the way down. This is seriously a graduation drink. You have to earn your way here. I feel like I have climbed the ladder with their others to this. The aroma from this beer is what it says: Northwest hops. They say seven on the sales sheet that was on the bar. I don't know which seven but there was lots of citrus and pine resin going on. There was also a slight bit of fruitiness. The mouthfeel is full and it had a perfect carbonation. Overall, this IPA is straight up WOW! I have one of their beers left to try, but this is F'in awesome! I'm getting another!

Poured from draft to a pint glass.
A: Lovely orange amber cloudy goodness.
S: The smell screams hops. Tons of hops.
T: OMG! I thought I was going to downgrade from a Dogfish Burton Baton to this to stay safe. No such luck... because I want another.
M: After having the DFH Burton Baton this has more mouthfeel.
Overall, like I said above. I can't go back to a Burton Baton but I am going to have to call a cab, because I am going to have to have another Maelstrom.

Originally had on tap in Fullsteam shaker pint at Sam's Quik Shop. I liked it enough to buy a 1/6 keg to sit next to my Gallow's Point Porter, also from Skull Coast. This review is on tap in my favorite beer glass - DFH Chalice while sitting in my favorite chair while listening to my wife babble about our crazy neighbor.

Appearance: Very nice burnt orange with fluffy off-white head. Head sticks around a while and a few quick swirls in the glass produces another 1/2" head. Lacing absolutely coating the glass.

Smell: Floral, fruity hops and sweet malt. Nice aroma.

Taste: Hops smack you right off the bat. Grapefruit, oranges, mangos, and pine. This is a very nice hoppy beer with a huge malt backbone. Mildly sweet finish with the bitter hops lingering. Really nice taste and extremely well-balanced.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied IPA and mouth is near perfect for me.

Overall: Easily my favorite local IPA. It is a big, well-balanced beer that is an every day drinker for me. This will be on rotation in the kegerator and is a welcomed addition. Overall, Skull Coast is one of the best kept secrets in the Carolinas. All of their beers are interesting and delicious. I'm really impressed with their beers overall.

Another local offering that I had the other day. Had it ontap. Orange color with a white head and good lacing. The hop smell what like a punch in the face. But a good punch. The taste very hoppy with a nice malty backbone. I really liked how the hops stuck around for you with this one. It had a nice finish, but the hops were left my tongue tingling a bit which was really nice. You have to be a IPA person for this. Not for the bud and miller crowd. And, like I said about the Stone Arrg. Bastard, you have to be a craft beer drinker to appreciate.

A: First BA review so please excuse me if I get this wrong. I got a pint of Maelstrom at Beef O'Brady's and was blown away. It appears a nice amber color with a big ol head on there.

S: It was a hop bomb type smell. I can see why they call this Maelstrom. It had lots of citrus, grapefruit with pine. Not sure what the hops actually are but I liked the combination.

T: The best thing about this beer is the taste. It's not like a run-of-the-mill IPA. It's got some zing to it. Tons of hops and a really wonderful balance. I like really hoppy beers, so this one hit the spot.

Mf: The gentleman next to me was also having a Maelstrom and he told me that it was Unfiltered, which may be the reason there was plenty of mouthfeel to this. Not thin at all.

Overall: I love this beer! It's completely different than the other IPAs that I've had. And, I'm a huge IPA fan, this was a great surprise to find that it was actually made locally. I'm going to be trying to find their other beers now!
