Growler was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: A one finger mocha head was poured that reduced to a thin layer. It is a pitch black color with no vision of anything. Spotty lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Smoke, roasted, bittersweet chocolate, caramel, ale, and earthy qualities.

Taste: Same as above with mild ash bitterness on the palate.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied, smoke bitterness, and medium carbonation.

Overall: A nice black ale. More pine notes would have been nice, but still content with the beer.

Nice sweet coffee smell to it. Lots of interesting, unexpected flavors. Kind of fruit... maybe? Definitely some light coffee taste, possibly some tea flavors in there. A little ways through I got some sort of menthol/medicinal stuff. I don't know if this really should be called a black IPA, but how can something be a black pale ale anyway. Tasty and interesting.

Near black in color where no light passes even on the edge of the glass. Spotty lace.

Burnt toast and some ash (??, like a fireplace after a fire) to the nose.

Strong darker malt flavors: chocolate and some black patent. Good balance to the hop. The body is solid. Interestingly, there are burnt flavors in the aftertaste. A good dose of yeast flavors. Excellent complexity.
