Had this brew with dinner tonite. It came to me in a pint glass and was a hazy orange color. The surprise was the beer was cold! I thougth cask brews were normally room or cellar temp. The head was bright white and soft and fluffy. Great retention! Always about a cm throughout my drink.
The aroma is one dimensional with piney hops dominating.
First sip reveals a smooth soft carbonation as cask brews should be. Flavor is faint sweet caramel up front but is overtaken by sour citrus hops from middle to finish. This beer is smooth and easy to drink but could use a little more development on the flavor.

Served in a pint glass at the brewery.

Appearance: A copper / amber color, and though admittedly it was filled pretty much to the top, there wasn't a lot of lacing or retention from the foam doing much.

Smell: A solid but not overwhelming sense of hops, good malty dark fruits, and grainy husks and earthiness.

Taste: The hops aren't overly bitter and work really well with the fruitiness of the malt. They both go well with the earthy and fresh graininess and husk flavors from the earthiness. Finish goes from bitter to sweeter and keeps changing throughout, which is nice.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied, which was slightly surprising, with good carbonation overall.

Drinkability: A solid and fresh take on the Cascade style. Had we stayed longer, I could've had at least two more pretty easily.

On tap at the brewpub. Aggressively carbonated yet light mouthfeel, minimum head with lace. Citrus taste is significant. This is perhaps the most drinkable of all their beers. All I can describe is an average American style IPA. Average for the style.

Tried this one at ABC. When brought forth, it had a good glow appearance that was distorted from it's murky composition. It had a nice, thick aroma, well developed hop odor. It's taste was heavy with citrus, but its carbonation was very crisp. Overall, one of ABC's classic IPAs.

L: Pours a nice amber color with a tall and thick white colored head that laces the glass nicely on the way down.
S: Smells of sweet malts, and nice sweet/bitter cascade hops. It's a bit citrisy and a bit piney.
T: Taste is very good for this IPA. The bittersweet citrisy piney hops go really well with the malty base.
M: Very crisp, refreshing, delicious.
D: Very drinkable IPA, liked this one alot.

I think that growlers get a little bit oxidized and lose head and retention. Retention is good though, and the lacing stays for a long time.

Pours a 1 finger head in my 32 oz. mug. Murky brown in color. Smell of pale and caramel malts with cascade hops. I believe I smell crystal malts as the dominant malt. Well balanced nose that is a little faint (probably from the trip.

There is some dry pale malt that comes out on the palate first, balanced by a slight caramel malting. It finishes with a one dimensional cascade hop bitterness. I think this brew could use another hop addition for the malting behind it or that It could use a lighter bodied malt backbone to accentuate the citrusy that comes from cascade hops.

Mouthfeel has a decent cling to the palate, but lacks a crisp and full body. Perhaps this was cask conditioned at one point.

Not a bad beer, needs a lighter maltiness or another hop to compliment the cascade. But that is a small flaw, not a big one.

This beer gets better as it warms, but my criticisms of it remain the same.

Enjoyed on cask at the brewpub. Presented in a pint glass.

Frothy, thick 3/4" head, over a clear dark gold/amber brew. Aroma of pale malts and surprising little hops. Taste has a strong base of pale malts, and is quickly overcome by the flood of Cascade hops that must have been hiding from the nose. Goes down smooth like most of their casks. Mouthfeel and drinkability were excellent. Another ABC cask that I could and would drink this all day if I "had" to.

<edit> - 8 months later, without referencing this review, rated this brew within 0.1 of this review. Apparently this is still as great as it was. Check it out!

The ABC is a pretty nice place. This was the only beer I got to sample during my most recent visit, and I was glad to see it as a cask selection. Served cold. A nice light orange amber color with an inch of puffy off-white head on the top. Smell is a bit subdued, but I can pick up on some bitter hops. Taste is a tad watery for and IPA, but that also might be due to the cask conditioning. Tastes hoppy, yeah, but not as much as I was expecting. Kind of tastes more like an English ESB to me, which is fine. It's definately got a bitter dirty bite to the end of it, which is nice. Mouthfeel is of course very smooth and creamy from the hand pump. Mmmmm. Pretty drinkabe decent beer. I'll have to have it on tap sometime to compare the difference.

Cask at the Brew pub.

Long engine pour yields upside down water fall with fluffy huge head big bubbles , murky amber reddish tan like color, nice lacing.

Nose dcnt hops with cascade light grassy and bit spicy with hint of fruit almost citrusy but not quite, hint of malty sweetness, a nice spicy grassy hop mostly in the background though.

Taste brings a nice cascade flavor, a bit of citrus with light spicy and grassy hops, lighter but decent biterness, light sweet fln uffy malts with a hint of caramel. Finish is drier with little sticky malt, nice ramping btterness and more spicy light citrus hops. Clean profile overall.

Mouth is med bodied, decent carb for cask, nice soft cask like feel.

Overall not bad, very basic recipe that let the hops shine through well. Nice and clean tasty, and decent cask.

"Light amber in color, medium body with a hoppy aroma and finish."

Modest head, but it leaves a coating of lace. Neutral amber color and cloudy.

Fresh hop cone aroma--spicy.

Solid malt start; gives way to a hop bitterness that lasts through the aftertaste. Below average in terms of richness, but it's not that distracting. Of the flight, this was my favorite offering.

Defintely not an IPA fan but this one struck me as something I would order again. Definately not an intense IPA as far as the hops go, but I like a balanced beer personally. Love the fact that they choose not to filter this product, allows other flavors to work off each other.

Pours a hazy murky amber color with a nice crowning of off white head, good lacing on the way down as well as head retention.

Smell is first off of grains not of hops but those come in very quickly. They are subtle, with nice spicy tones mixed with general fruitiness. Gives way to more malted grains.

Taste is wonderful lots of play between the ingredients, hops mingle nicely with malt. Fruits such as lemons and grapefruit mixed with peppercorns and dark brown bread.

Feel is good as well nice consistency, not overly carbonated.

poured a dark orange with murky body. rather flat... probably a mechanical issue.

this beer is unimpressive in the aroma, some hops detectable but not much else, and very light at that.

light body with a real fresh bitterness. very drinkable, especially when washing down a good meal. unfortunately, a little less substance than i usually seek out in my ipa's. not all that people make it out to be.. a disappointment.

Growler purchased at the brewpub. I assume this was the Cascade IPA, it simply had 'IPA' written on the cap.

Pours into a pint a darkish amber with an off-white head that retains as a decent cap, leaving a few spots of lace.

Smell/taste/mouthfeel - Pretty average in all aspects. Light on the hops, mostly herbal/earthy and a bit of grapefruit. Some sweet caramel and bready malts, comes off kinda as a light red ale. Not bad but pretty unexciting. Mouthfeel comes off as a bit limp, could use more carbonation.

Very so-so, I was hoping for a growler fill from the tap, this was pre-filled and sitting in the fridge for what seems like too long.

Sharing this growler with a buddy, szwaya, who brought it back from western mass on his recent trip out there. Much appreciated!

A: Pours a hazy dark amber almost copper color with a thin white head. Dissipates pretty fast leaving a thin rim around the edge of the glass. Spiderweb lacing on the glass.
S: Big cascade hop presence touting big juicy grapefruit notes. Nice caramel malt background rounds out the profile. Juicy hop profile that's like sticking your nose into a bag of recently opened hops.
T/M: Grassy, spicy, and citrus fruit hop profile is lick smackingly wonderful. Leafy presence also invades the senses. Spicy hop profile lasts into the finish and coats the taste buds in the aftertaste. Toasted grain flavor in the aftertaste also. Biscuit malt profile finds it's way to the surface as it's going down the gullet. Floral hop presence also detected, but very subtle. Nice mouthfeel with a solid medium body.
D: A very solid IPA from western Mass. Glad I got the chance to try this offering. Spicy hops tend to horde the mouthfeel, but it's not a bad thing.

I was pleasantly surprised by the two beers I had at this brewery. Poured a slightly hazy copper color with a medium head and a nice amount of lacing. Aroma was slightly sweet smelling and hoppy. Nice rich hoppy flavor with some malt backing and mild fruitiness to it. Hoppy, bitter dry finish. I look forward to going back and trying some others.

Big thanks to Jagger for sending this growler as an extra in a recent growler swap!

This one pours a hazy, cloudy amber orange with a thick off-white head. The smell is a faint piney and citrus hop with a small hint of biscuit malts. The taste is much the same but the hops are showcased here. The first time I had this I got a very overpowering malt presence but I tried it again and the hops are overpowering the malt. The mouthfeel is thin but just what I was looking for in this refreshing IPA. Drinkability is also very good. Overall this was a little light for me. Its more like an overhopped APA to me but still a great offering.

An honest to goodness IPA. When I find one of these it is like catching a leprechaun.

Poured a golden amber out of the glass. Thin head on top that only receded because I wound up drinking it away. The glass is coated nicely in ringed lace.

Nose is malts and hops--more sweet than bitter though.

Flavor is greatly balanced. This is a true IPA for the style. Sweet malts balanced by a potent--bit not pucker my lips and call me sally--amount of hops. Chewy and oily. The hops are not citrus but more of a meringue.

More of a juiciness than a wateriness. Medium body that kind of slidesdown past the cheeks and leaves a slickness behind.

I only have a growler of this beer?

On tap at the brewpub.

Wow. Orange and hazy in color with 3/4 of a white head. Fresh hops. Tasted like raw green cascade hops in the flavor. Hops are present. They were fresh. Nice bitterness. Malty. Nice subtle malt backbone. Nicely balanced flavor. Enjoyable. Wonderful..

Enjoyed on cask at Amherst Brewing Company.

A - Poured into a standard pint glass a slightly murky golden copper hue with a big dense creamy two finger white blanket that left nice side lacing and retention.

S - Aromas are rather faint for cascade hops, some light malt light citrus and faint earthy grass notes.

T - Taste is good representation of cascade hops, light bitter finish light citrus and subtle spiciness very clean.

M - Mouthfeel is pretty on par for a cask beer. Smooth and creamy.

O - Overall I felt this was a solid beer from ABC, glad I got to try it on cask. Super drinkable.

I really liked this one. We had stopped into the Amherst Brewing Co for lunch the day after the Stone night at the M&D. Luckily I had no afte reffects from the night before so was still up for a beer or two. I could have had this all day, (I only ended up having the Honey Pilsner after this one). Anyway...Hazy deep tangerine, full head of foam. The bartender took her time with our pours which paid off. I dug the fresh hop aroma, smooth malt base, and nice dry finish. The beer was balanced. Sheets of lace through-out the glass. Very drinkable. I think the balance and lack of needing to be a hop monster impressed me the most.

Sampled at the brewpub July 2002 and July 2003. Review almost the same, but with taste improving from 4 to 4.5.

This IPA poured a clear, orange-amber color with white foam that clung to the glass. The smell was grassy, "green" floral hops, but the smell faded fast after the pour. The taste was dominated by hops: strong and "chewy" hops with a bitter hop finish but with a good malt balance. The mouthfeel was smooth, dry, and hoppy. The body was medium. This was a good, nicely hopped IPA.

I don't legitimately taste cascade hops in this brew. it hurts things because of its namesake, and im not being critical (i am, but not unnecessarily so). light copper brassy color, inch of white head, ive seen this before. nose of English hops of all things, why is that the case, maybe too much cara malt balance, but its still a hoppy brew, inexplicable. medium body, great carbonation, this beer works, although as a stylistic misfit. its drinkable yet its heavy duty, its hoppy, yet is has a perfect malt balance, its delicate but its not at all. i like it for these reasons, although i think its a bit safe, which i never like from a brewer. safe is bullshit, and this is safe, even though it tastes good.

on cask at ABC on 2/14/08

dull amber, like dark honey. decent head that fades slowly. great lacing.

mild pine scent and trace caramel. again, they serve their beers a bit colder than i'd like.

hop flavor is on the resiny side. there is a gentle hop note, but again, the temp is too cold. bitterness is certainly bold.

some watery thinness, with some type of pucker (can't remember if it's bitterness or acidity). carbonation is mild.

i just wish they wouldn't serve these ice-cold.
