on tap 7/13/07

AP: totally opaque blackness with an totally even, smooth and tight tan colored head that seems to not dissipate at all. The thick creamy head leaves thick lacing on the glass.

nose: Creamy vanilla and chocolate malt, very much like a good oatmeal stout but with a distinct coffee aroma.

flavor: A robust coffee and chocolate malt lover's delight with big complexity and depth...sweet, smooth vanilla, chocolate and subtle red berries flavored coffee with a mildly bitter but subtle hop counter-balance with a sour yeast effect right at the end.

Feel: full bodied for sure, but smooth and not as hefty as most RIS, and the 6% ABV is not felt at all.

DA: This RIS drank more like an Irish Dry stout or oatmeal stout rather than the dank RIS. Pretty easy to drink in light of the lower-end ABV.

Coffee aroma. Really bold rich coffee, taste on tap at the brewpub. Creamy mouthfeel, lace on brandy brown though minimal head. Bitter surpasses malting. One of their best in this place, unfortunately inconsistent. Medium mouthfeel, appropriately carbonated.

I cannot believe this beer is right around the corner and is as fantastic as it is. I was at ABC a couple of weeks ago and this beer was not available, so I'll assume it's one of their newer seasonal offerings.

Black body wonderfully developed half-inch head. Uniformly laced, wondrous beauty. Nose and taste are nutty, slight chocolate body, ending with a touch of bitterness.

An underappreciated brewpub. Wonderfully crafted beers topping out at $3.75. Food isn't too bad either.

On tap at the ABC. Appearance was awesome: very dark colors with a thin, chocolate-like head and eventual lacing. Heavy mocha aromas were sensed explicitly. Really toasty and creamy in the taste department; really decadent and bittersweet. Solid medium body aided the drink wonderfully. Overall, one of the best at ABC.

Served in a pint glass at the brewpub.

Pours a jet black color with a one finger tan head with good retention and thick lacing down the glass. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, light smoke. Roasted malt flavors mix with an espresso bitterness with a smooth chocolate finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, a little too thin. This is a good stout but not very complex, a little boring for a Russian Imperial Stout compared to what else is out there.

Nice charcoal body. Brown chocolate head is very sticky, long-lasting. Big malty aroma with restrained roastiness, thick greasy malts, dark and oaty. At the border between imperial and oatmeal stout, but I would definitely have enjoyed it more without the greasy touch. I truly like the flavor. This is like chewing on oat chunks, not too sweet, not too bitter. Flour and chocolate/coffee flavors. Pretty good. By far the thickest beer I’ve had there, so they could actually give their porter a fuller body, which is a nice thing to know. Low carbonation seems appropriate. Relieving body even.

L: Pours a jet black color with a short but very thick tan colored head that sits on top of the beer and settles very slowly. When it does, it is has very nice lacing down the sides.
S: Smells of deep roasted malts, some chocolate, coffee, and even toffee mixed in the aroma as well.
T: Tastes very good with a sweet and roasty malt base with layers of coffee and chocolate over it. No hint of an alcoholic taste which is really nice.
M: The mouthfeel was very smooth, rich, and warming with the right amount of carbonation.
D: Very drinkable beer, considering it is on the lower side of imperial stouts. Possibly their best beer.

Pours pitch black with a tan one finger head that retains decently anf leaves medium lacing. Smells and tastes of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style and a bit overcarbonated for me also, no alcohol present either. Drinkability is good, great taste, low price, no bad off flavors, no alcohol. Will buy this one as long as I live in the wmass area.

Enjoyed on cask at the brewpub. Presented in a pint glass.

Frothy, thick 3/4" brown head, over a dark, dark brown/black brew. Aroma of dark malts is dominant. Taste has a strong base of dark malts, which stands out over all else. Goes down smooth like most of their casks. Mouthfeel and drinkability were excellent. Scary to think that I could easily be forced to drink this all day. Go ahead, force me, I'll tough it out...

"Dark, rich, hearty and smooth with a chocolatey flavor."

Coating lace from a lasting head throughout the tasting. Near black color--no light passes.

Lots of mocha and chocolate smells, but not sweet.

Rich body, slightly oily. Dark chocolate taste with no sweetness. Light background hop that provides some interest and balance. Dark cherry flavor in the background. This is not an extreme Imperial.

Thanks to aerojones2 for the growler.

The beer pours into a pint glass with a black color and a dark brown head with excellent retention.

Aroma has some slight fruit, some coffee, and a bit of milk, but all in low intensity. There is some unpleasant, vegggie type DMS character going in the nose. One would think a hefty stout could have enough aromatics to cover the flaws up.

A full, creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation is the highlight of this beer. The flavor has some milky, coffee, and chocolate flavors and some fruit notes in a dry finish. DMS character is back from the nose, as well as a grainy flavor that adds a somewhat sour and tannic finish. I have a feeling that this beer is inconsistent. There were some good flavors coming through behind the flaws, so perhaps I had an off batch. This was hard to finish, so I didn't.

My homie Jeff brought over this growler the other night. Thanks!

Poured nicely out of the growler, nearly black. Nice tan foam. Poor retention and inconsistent lacing.

Smells of some boiled vegetables attempting to be hidden by roasted malts. Just not enough stout characteristics here to cover what is clearly an off flavor. Uggh, only gets worse as it warms. Ehh the flavor is the same, you get some roast and chocolate as it warms but really the off flavors are hurting this beer drastically. It has some of what people would call that "homebrew" flavor, boiled vegetables, DMS, just overall nasty. Mouthfeel is pretty ok, I'll give it a little benefit of the doubt since it's coming out of a growler. I really don't want to drink this at all (and we each only drank about half a pint of it before pouring the rest out), but I suppose the alcohol is well integrated for this 6.5% 'imperial' stout.

Pour was a solid black.Had a black coffee look to it with a brown head.First sip I noticed a strong ABV.It had a very creamy mouthfeel. The finish was bitter and dry.A full bodied porter with a smokey nut aroma.Very sweet almost like a milk stout.Overall very good to above average.I would try this again.

I sampled this Imperial Stout at the brewpub and again later from a growler. The color was a typical black stout with some light brown foam that settled but clung. The aroma was roasted malt with some cocoa and coffee overtones. The taste was strong and bitter with chocolate and coffee and roasted malt flavors. Some bitter hops are in the finish. The mouthfeel was full and rich and smooth with a nice light carbonation feel. The aftertaste was malty with some hop bitterness. The drinkability was good. At 6.7% abv this Imperial Stout is on the low end for its type. It is a very good stout, but some purists might argue it is not complex enough for an Imperial.

A - this stout arrives a midnight black with a thin wispy tan head, too dark to note carbonation

S - big roasted malts are the first element I notice, that is quickly followed by some dark chocolate characteristics

T - bitter cocoa powder flavors are up first, followed by some toasted malts, and a new head emerges, a faint background vanilla

M&D - smooth, crisp and quenching, a fine RIS with plenty of flavor without being overcomplicated, would love to see them age some of this in some barrels
