big ass establishment one and a half miles from umass. its a big sprawling venue, long bar 50 yards long and bending, huge pool hall, this is a college bar on first impression. the quality however, is a step above that, but only one step. almost 20 brews on, very impressive, with as many house as guest brews, and some rarities at that, with sierra Nevada beer camp stuff, and gems from smuttynose and harpoon and all, very cool. great great tap list. bartender too is awesome, local cat back and forth to nyc, good insight, not a beer guy per se, but a dope smoker and a classic. generous as anything with the freebees, and a genuinely fun place to hang for awhile. pretty college undergrads abound, but that's not the point here, as sweet as they look, this is about camaraderie. not brutally expensive for what you get, pulled pork chilli is bangin, and overall a place worth visting.

Have been to the old one a couple times, this review is on the new one on University Drive, a great new location
Atmosphere - I think that the new place lost a little bit of the homey feel of the old place. However, it is spacious, very clean and well decorated, beautiful bar and pool area.
Quality - High quality all around
Service - Very good, with a good knowledge of beers and foods
Selection - Mostly German food, not an "all encompassing" selection, but almost all would be able to find something they like
Food - food is always great, I think their German or Pub style food is best.
Value - Awesome Value, good prices on beer and nice meal prices for large portions.
Great place, if visiting Umass or in the area - you must go

I stopped in here on 04AUG12 with older daughter Caitlin after hitting the airshow at Westover. It was fairly easy to find in a mini-stripmall type of setting just out of the busy area of Amherst. Can tell it used to be a gym; not set up as a typical pub.
Through the sizable foyer and past the hostess stand towards the bar. There's a large, bright dining area to the right, fronting the building. The bar is more to the rear, with more dining and pool tables to the left. Save for the front dining area, the rest has low lighting and dark wood; still feels comfy, though. The bar is extensive, running long from front to back along the back right wall. It has one island-U protruding out near the start, then runs about 50' to the back. A nice dark-wooded bar has a well-placed curved front to lean on. There are a few bier towers, and the barback has lots of liquor, mirrors, and bier plaques. More bier posters and pics adorn the other walls as well. A large blackboard lists the current in-house brews as well as the guest offerings. They had about 9-10 ABC biers and another 10 or so guests. And they ran the gamut of styles, too: maibock, hefeweizen, IPA, imperial stout, rye bier... Sweet!
I had some samples of a few, but quaffed the Maibock in quantity. Caitlin had the hefe- and liked it well. Started with a great, big-ass German pretzel, then some wurst and chili for our main meals. Well made and very flavorful! Service was A-1! We were asked if we'd been in before. When replied no, the 'tender laid out the bier option styles and servings available. Didn't suck that she was hot, too!
Well worth the stop! We both lamented the fact that ABC was a bit of a drive from home... Oh well... Prosit!!

One of the best places in the western mass area. Great prices and an very good selection. Their brews are excellent. The Two Sisters Stout in awesome. One of the best I have had. They also offer some rare guest beers. Just had a rare beer week. Great selection. Brewer usually available and very will make himself available for questions. They also have one or two beers on cask. Very good food with a good selection. Huge bar area. Just a great spot. They also offer their beer to go in growlers. Home run.

Had to quickly re-review this place, went to the new location for the first time over the weekend. I was skeptical at first because I knew the building they were moving into and their old location was prime, downtown Amherst.
The first thing I have to say is the new place is absolutely enormous. They have two massive lounges/dining rooms with TVs, the "upstairs" of the old building is now a separate billiards and game room and the bar is probably the biggest I have ever seen. They converted an ugly old gym into a very nicely decorated beer bar, very impressed. Tin brewery signs all over, nice wooden structures, clean new bar and tables, new signs for their own beers. They have also increased the amount of taps which is awesome. They had about 8-10 guest taps, 2 casks, and like 11 of their beers on-tap including 2 vintages, a step up from the old location (especially in the guest department). I know it was "rare beer week" but ABC has always brought in great guest beers for good prices. A few examples include Bourbon County, Angel's Share (both), Older Viscosity, Backwoods Bastard, Brooklyn one-offs, etc. Besides beer they have all of the necessary spirits and a few scotches to try. The food was always good, I didn't try any this time around but have had it many times in the past. Gotta give them some more points for atmosphere, quality and selection. I always liked ABC but now it is one notch up from where it used to be. Value is still awesome, even their vintage house beers were $4 a glass and most of the guest beers came in 4 or 8 oz pours so you could try them without breaking the bank. I had a 4oz BCBS, 4oz Firestone 14 and a pint of the Chocolate Porter for $13.
Old Review: (08/12/11, summary of many visits to old location)
Spent a lot of time here during the college years at UMASS. I loved the downstairs bar and am interested in seeing what they do with the new location. Always a great selection of regulars, seasonal and cask versions of pretty much all their beers, 2-3 at a time. Guest beers are usually solid to above average and they also have a good bottle list. Good cost on growlers to bring home. I have had some of the food but mostly the pub classics like wings, nachos and such, they were always nice. I would recommend this brewpub to anyone as they have a style to fit everyone's tastes.

I'm a long time fan of the ABC. I like the new location on University Drive but I am prejudice and prefer the old location on North Pleasant St - I loved the "vibe" of the old ABC with its brick walls and being located in the center of Amherst.
John the brewer continues to produce good quality house beers. The Cascade IPA is always a favorite but keep an eye out for two seasonal beers; Gone Postal IPA and the Banker's Gold. Both are outstanding and neither lasts long.
The ABC has made a conscious decision to expand their guest tap selections. I'm always impressed with the variety offered. I'm also happy to see the ABC has made an effort to feature, at times, other Massachusetts produced beers.

Headed up here the other night. Wasn't really sure what to expect. The place was huge and open, and had maybe the biggest bar i had ever seen. Had a good selection of thier own beers and maybe half a dozen guest beers. I started off with the Spicy Bloody Mary pale ale, on cask. It was one of the more intresting beers i have ever had. It was very much like a bloody, but difficult to drink the whole pint as the flavor was over powering. My second beer was the two sisters stout which was fantastic. Had a cajun chicken sandwich which was phenomenal. I highly recommend the fries.
I thought it was very reseasonable, I think it was $42 for four beers and dinner for two. Service was decent, one of the bartenders kept giving us parts of frozen drinks, although I stuck with the beer. If i was up in the area i would stop by again.

I went with my friend on a sunday afternoon and there was almost nobody there, which worked in our favor because the bartender was very social and helpful. I had the beer sampler consisting of the honey pilsner, two sisters stout, puffers smoked porter, north pleasant pale ale, massatuckey brown ale, half in the bagpipe, patriots pilsner, and the black dog ipa. They were all decent beers with the exception of the honey pilsner which was fantastic. All of the other beers seemed a little watery. Even the stout was watery which turned me away from it, but overall the beers weren't bad.

The restaurant is kind of dark but good service usually. If I had one comment its check your schedule before you go here, if its end of the school year beware parking and long lines. The restaurant is a favorite of UMass so knowing when the school breaks are helps. That being said ABC has some of the best micro brews I've ever had. I would go and drink there if it was a hole in the wall, the beer is phenomenal. The food is average, they now have an upstairs in addition to the down stairs and seating outside for spring through fall. Parking can be challenging sometimes. They also sell growlers, basically this is a great brew house that serves average to slightly above average food. The food is your typical bar food, hamburgers, meat loaf, shepherds pie, etc., and its usually very good for what it is. Service has always been good, on the bar side it can be challenging to get served in a timely manner if its crowded. The beers they have are usually on a rotation and they usually have at least two specialty beers which go very quickly.

So I stopped by this place on Black Friday around 1PM. It was fairly empty, but there were a few people at the bar. The place was comfortable and fairly well laid out, but not exceptional.
I had two half pints of their beer (Super Stout and Chocolate Peppermint Porter) and a tasting of the ABC/BBC collaboration beer. They were all good, none great. The Chocolate Peppermint Porter stood out among the rest - I really like the sub-style.
The bartender was somewhat knowledgeable about the beer, but was very attentive and friendly. He was very willing to give tasters.
The selection was decent. They had a fairly wide variety of beer with a Triple, a stout and porter on cask, a Belgian IPA, a smoked porter, among others. They had all 4 of the Sierra Nevada 30th beers on tap.
I had the nachos with chili, which was very good. All the food around me looked very good, too. It's certainly bar food, but is very good bar food.
