In May of 2014, our friend and mentor Anders Kissmeyer of Kissmeyer Beer & Brewing visited Hill Farmstead Brewery, along with our dear friend Will Meyers of Cambridge Brewing Co., to brew a special collaborative beer. Inspired by our guests and their journeys, this beer was brewed with the resourcefulness and inventiveness of the Nordic tradition, as well as the creative spirit of its three architects. Farmstead ale brewed with honey, heather, rose hips, rhubarb and wheat.

750ml bottle poured into a Hill Farmstead wine glass.

A~ beautiful glowing copper with yellow undertones. decent head and a bit of lacing.

S~ tons of bready, peppery Belgium saison yeast, tart citrus and what do you know! a ton of honey!

T~ you get everything from the nose just a tad more subtle here. so theres bread, pepper, lemon, lime, grapefruit, fresh cut grass, wheat, spelt?, and of course great honey flavor! ending with a nice dry lemony tartness and some bretty barnyard funk. mmm...!

M~ perfect carbonation! not gonna lie I expected it to gush haha! very refreshing and dry on the finish.

O~ its like a sessionable blend of Arthur and Anna hmm...! the crazy citrus from Arthur and the great honey flavor of Anna just a little lighter all around. overall definitely another great colab. i'd like to try Kissmeyer's version of this at some point. i wish his regulars didn't start getting brewed in the states... they might be better now but i loved when he was still brewing himself in Denmark. anyway this is a perfect 4.25 and theres nothing wrong with that! (1,076 characters)

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Hazy pale orange. Nice white head. Some lacing. Thick collar and nice surface wisps.

Smell - Sharp citrus. Lemony tartness. Citrus hops. Grassy and herbal character. Yeasty aromas.

Taste - Yeasty and tart. Lemon zest tartness. Grassy. Almost a salty flavor in the back end.

Mouthfeel - Well carbonated. Pleasantly tart. Medium body.

Overall - It's not a standout saison for Hill Farmstead and I definitely have no idea what Nordic means, but I enjoy it quite a bit. (520 characters)

Appearance: pours a light straw yellow color. A finger plus of a white head that fades quickly and leaves just the slightest lacing behind. Completely opaque with haze and a small amount of sediment. 3.75/5

Smell: Lots of grassy or straw-like aromas. slightly sweet lemon bread and a nice hint of tart fruits. 4.25/5

Taste: opens up with fresh cut grass, straw and a strong earthiness and mineral taste. lots of lemon and some sweet lemon bread. towards the end a tart tropical fruit/berry mix comes in. 4.5/5

Mouthfeel: fairly light. a good dryness that gets you ready for another sip. Slightly tart. Possibly one of the most refreshing beers that I have had. 4.75/5

Overall: my first Hill Farmstead and surely not my last. Wonderfully balance and complex. great tartness and just the right amount of dryness. One of the best american saisons easily 4.5/5 (860 characters)

750ml

A big thanks goes out to Ryan for this guy! Nordic saison is mildly hazy and bright golden, with an actual glow. The pure white foam is billowing and becomes quickly meringue like as it forms stiff peaks. Lacing is left stuck to the glass like glue while carbonation rushes from the middle of the glass to bolster the head. Just as a saison should look.

Soft orchard fruits, a little indistinct come from the glass and have a touch of a medicinal quality. The real star of the show is an ever rustic hay-like earthiness that's both vibrant and bright. The soft fruitiness is met with a mild sweetness on the backend that rounds out the whole thing. Mouthwatering.

Flavor is very similiar to the nose. The orchard fruits shine a little brighter with musty peach being up front. The medicinal quality follows through middle to end while the hay and wildflowers tend to pop up here and there adding that rustic, old school quality so many saisons are missing these days. Very good example of the style.

The body is light and airy as it should be. Carbonation is lively and active, adding to the feel and wakening the tastebuds. Before the dry finish is a quick flash of soft sweetness. Drinkability is insanely high, especially on a warm muggy night like this one.

I have to give Hill Farmstead credit. They can brew one hell of a saison. They know how to nail that rustic, only slightly wild characteristic that adds so much depth. Nordic Saison is another winner from the fellas up in Vermont. Thanks again, Ryan! (1,523 characters)

Like a cross between Arthur & Anna. The honey is light and adds a touch of sweetness and complexity to a bone dry farmhouse ale. Quenching and light. A beautiful beer to pair with food. The carb is spot on as well as the full body. A bit of a haylike scent on the nose but nothing too noteworthy. Excellent beer. (318 characters)

light yellow in color. lots of tarty sweetness on the nose. all sorts of fruits and sweetness to the taste, along with some tartness. very easy to drink, especially at 7%.

I did not read who made this as it was part of a trade, but WOW was I impressed as this was my first Hill Farmstead beer. Cannot wait until my next. (327 characters)
