Notes/Commercial Description:
Edward (1917-2002) is our grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his five children. In his honor, this American Pale Ale is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Edward’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, with impressions of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Edward.

85 IBU

Pale and Caramel malt; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; House Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

On-tap at the Blackback Pub in Waterbury, VT - served in a Hill Farmstead tulip. Hazy orange complexion with a loose, quarter inch off-white head that dissipates into a consistent skim. Concentric bands of lacing encircle the shoulders of the glass. Nose expresses citrus and floral notes; slightly grassy and delicate with some biscuity aromas towards the back. Taste follows nose; however, more of an earthy/grassy character comes out in the flavor profile with the citrus notes lingering lightly and some hops bittering in the background. There's also a trace of wet cardboard at the finish. Mouthfeel is light and lively with a pleasant, palate cleansing carbonation. Overall, an immensely quaffable American Pale Ale that is a hallmark of the style in my humble opinion.

This was stop two of our Guys Day Out yesterday. This brewery is in the heart of the boondocks. We sampled 4 different beers from Hill Farmstead.

Edward was a nice and smooth APA. I even bought a growler of it and a bottle of Florence. Magnificent beer.

750ml growler poured into a Bruery tulip.

A - Pours with a fruit juice'y haziness and a pale dirty golden color. A three finger cap of dense, tightly bubbled foam lingers for a long time before falling and leaving behind thick webs of sticky lacing on the glass.

S - Smells wonderful - filled with lots of piney hops, plenty of grapefruit and tropical fruits and pineapple. Mild hop bitterness finds its way into the aroma. Not much for malt here...but the hops smell so good, it doesn't matter.

T - The smell doesn't lie. Lots of piney hops, thick and resiny with complementing white grapefruit - sharp, citrusy, juicy. Faint trace of malt underneath...a bit biscuity. Bitterness is mid-level and clean/crisp. This reminds me quite a bit of RR's Blind Pig...not a bad thing to be reminded of...

M - Body is a thinnish medium with an assertive mid/high carbonation level. Crisp and clean bitterness lingers for a long time past the swallow. Balance is good - easy to drink a lot of this one.

O - Another well made hoppy beer from Hill. They really know how to do these beers well. Tons of hop flavor, excellent balance, smooth and easy to quaff a bunch of this. If it was more plentiful, this would probably be in my fridge all of the time.

A- Somewhat of a pale, murky, light-amber colored body with a big, frothy bone white head. Good retention and lots of lacing.

S- Big citrus and piney hops mixed in with some tropical fruit aromas. The hops really come through and shine.

T- Citrus and pine flavors up front. Grapefruit flavors come through in the middle and stay until the finish. Slight caramel malt in the finish.

M- Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Smooth and drinkable with a slight bite towards the end.

O- Very solid pale ale. Good hop presence, good balance, very drinkable.
