Notes/Commercial Description:
Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

170 Theoretical IBU

Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Matthew, I can not thank you enough for this. Not only do you drive all the way to HFS to get me a growler of this, but you also bring it to within 10 miles of my apartment. Thank you.

Pouring a moderately hazy orange with a dense, white head with excellent retention and gorgeous lacing, this is among the nicer DIPA's I've laid eyes on. And the nose! Does it bring to mind Pliny (the Elder) or what?! The nose has such a wonderful Simcoe character, fresh, juicy, tropical fruit along with a beautiful ripe orange character! Ripe apricots, oranges and with some floral characteristics, this smells truly wonderful. The malt character is medium-low, with a little caramel, and some mild bready and cracker-like notes. A little alcohol is noticeable, but never in a detrimental way. One could even argue that the juicy hops almost make some of the fruit character appear candied.

The palate comes close to out-Plinying Pliny. That's not something I would say easily, simply because Elder (IMO) stands apart from almost every other DIPA out there due to the way that it captures both, the delicacy that hops can bring with their power. Abner, in my book, is the only other beer this big that does that. Juicy citrus with a melange of tropical fruit (ripe papayas, ripe mangoes, ripe oranges). A touch sweet on the mid-palate with a blend of citrus juice sweetness (from the hops) and some light caramel malt and honey. Drying on the finish with an exquisite blend of mellow bitterness and ripe, redolent fruit. Bitterness is moderate throughout, in balance with the fruity sweetness that the hops bring. Not particularly resiny either. Medium-light in body, this beer is a little too carbonated (initially at least), and has a wonderful finish. Of particular note is the lack of a green/leafy hop character that many hop-bombs end up having. Absolutely delicious, exceptional stuff, my favorite HFS beer yet.

Had this on-tap at The Reservoir in Waterbury. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Shaun Hill's arrogance, I have to admit this brew is pretty legit.

A: Poured a very cloudy, golden color, with a slight, 1/2 finger head.

S: Floral in spades, with that certain "Dreadnaught-esque" candy-coated alcohol that is absolutely to die for.

T: Very Dreadnaught-esque in its IPA disposition: Fresh Orange juice, grapefruit, and some caramel and butterscotch thrown into the mix.

M: Hell, what do I know here. I guess I'll add that it's lowly carbonated, non-sugary, and damn-near perfect here.

O: This lives up to its hype, for sure.
