Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.
170 Theoretical IBU
Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Thanks go to Jonathan for picking these up from the source less than a week ago and sharing with me. Growler into a snifter, the brew appears a clouded golden orange color. A rich silky froth of off-white to yellowish stained head sits atop with decent powers of retention. As the cap fades, it leaves a webbing pattern of lace sticking all over the glass. A light swirl effortlessly revives the cap back to just shy of a finger's strength.
The aroma is herbal and grassy with a mild spicy to earthy yeast ester and a mild touch of solvent alcohol. There is a bit of some sulfur going on in this along with some cheesy grain and wheat aspects. At times, there is a touch of fruit and citrus hops that nearly get floral as well. As the brew warms up, it gets progressively more intense with the alcohol inclusion.
The taste has a slight amount of residual sugar that is faintly reminiscent of caramel. The sweetness is short-lived before a blast of herbal bitterness that is quite pulpy, resinous and bordering on pine-like. There is some catty elements to this similar to simcoe that mix with cheese flavoring that then gets dissolved by some solvent alcohol. The aftertaste while bitter and herbal includes a bit of straw flavoring just like the rest of the HF hoppy offerings I have tried.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is somewhat crisp but bold and aggressive with the bitterness. The alcohol is noticeable in this one but it integrates quite nicely. Of the hoppy HF offerings I have had lately, I give this one a slight edge over the others for having a bit more distinguishable character. But overall, the hoppy offerings from this brewery are so similar that I have no desire to seek them out anymore.

From brewery - canned October 2/23 - 6 days old.
Uniformly hazy burnt to brownish orange golden colour with a half finger of short lived just slightly off white head.
Nose is floral, some honey like malt; strong citrus notes - orange, red grapefruit - soft tropical fruit (mango mainly) with a hint of vanilla and piney resin. At one point questioned a bit of soapiness.
Sweet citrus on the palate - orange, but also a good whack of pithy grapefruit, some grapefruit peel bitterness coating the back of the mouth admixing with piney resin flavours.
Creamy and smooth, rich full mouthfeel - carbonation brightly pushes throughout the body - pithy bitterness lingers with the juicy sweetness.

Such a well balanced beer. Hill Farmstead doesn't go crazy with one flavor profile and that is embodied here. While labeled a NE IPA, is more caramel colored than hazy and tastes blend west coast and east coast styles, similar to Focal Banger. Definitely hoppy at the start but mellows with a malty, oaty finish. Partly hoppy and partly rustic, Abner is a expertly minimalist IPA. They do all the little things right.

A really great double IPA! Had a pint at The Bench restaurant in Stowe VT. Pours a hazy orange color with a good size white head and good lacing on the glass. Mostly citrus aroma but nicely balanced with hoppy goodness. Mouthfeel is rich, crisp and moderately bitter. An outstanding Double IPA!!
