Notes/Commercial Description:
Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

170 Theoretical IBU

Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

750ml growler thanks to Rschaeffer. I had some growler issues, so I will take that into account when reviewing.

A - Pours a cloudy, medium orange with only a few white bubbles forming at the top that quickly move to the edges.

S - The smell here is great, very citrusy. Mainly grapefruit and oranges.

T - Taste follows along nicely with the smell. Again very citrusy, orange and grapefruit, and a ever so slight honey-carmel taste.

D - Lower carbonation and a touch heavy on the body.

O - Even with the growler issues this is a nice DIPA.

Hill Farmstead Abner, on tap at Armsby Abbey in Woosta, Mass

Appearance: Served in Belgian 50-cl glass with huge 4-finger foamy head that slowly melts away and leaves massive lacing. Color is similar to Galaxy or Edward: hazy orange, deep and dirty and artisanal, like fresh apple cider from the farm.

Smell: Sweetness, citrus, a bit ofpineapple syrup. Some light spice and freshly pollinated flowers. Honey. Fresh, bright, enticing.

Taste: Smooth and easy, what you get first is a wave of boozy sugar-like sweetness. Sort of like rum cake. Tropical punch follows, and some fresh and bursting hops. Nothing extreme despite the ABV. Smooth like Keith S. and well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Did I mention smooth? Medium body, almost full flavor, good carbonation. Could use more strength (thin around the edges) but good. An utter pleasure to drink.

Overall: Exceptionally drinkable, barely a hint of that 8.0%. And always that outrageous, fresh-from-the-farm taste you get with all of Hill’s brews.

Growler courtesy of bring. Thanks a lot Barry. A growler of Double IPA, just the job! Poured into a snifter.

A: Hazy yellowish orange with a soft creamy white head. Some pretty nice retention and scattered lacing.

S: The aroma is pretty explosive, with big apricot, mango, and grapefruit notes. It's moderately floral, with a subtle candied quality. The hops are bright and juicy, and I can't take my nose out of the glass.

T: Massive fruit flavor, with mango, peach, apricot, orange, and grapefruit notes. The fruit is mostly flesh, but there's a touch of rind in there. Alcohol is well masked by the bold hop flavors. Malt provides a slight candied sweetness, but I can't really taste much aside from the hop character. The beer is moderately bitter with very little astringency.

M: Medium body with lower moderate carbonation. The mouthfeel is sticky and a bit odd - it's sort of mealy and granular and it reminds me of the texture you might find on a mango, a pear, or a peach.

Overall: Aside from the mouthfeel, I thought this was stellar. I guess Citra hops were substituted for Centennial in this batch, and they certainly leave their mark. It's ridiculously smooth and drinkable, and the hop aroma and flavor are excellent.
