Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

170 Theoretical IBU

Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

L: A super hazy gold, almost looks like fruit juice, with a creamy white head and excellent lacing.

A: Big Pine, apricot, citrus and a touch of peachy esters. Malt is neutral and clean in the aroma.

T: Smooth bitterness upfront, moves into big juicy and piney hops and a moderate mouthfeel. Hop character takes on flavors of apricot, big piney notes, and citrus. The ester profile from the aroma enhances the fruity character, and the malt sits behind the hops and allows them to come to the front. A dry but creamy finish gives the hop character a nice lingering finish.

Overall, one of the best DIPAs I have ever had, very well balanced and full of big, complex hop flavors. The brewers here in Vermont seem to be creating their own version of IPAs, very similar to west-coast but less bitter and with a more prominent yeast ester contribution. Hill Farmstead is living up to the hype.

Very hazy and dark gold in colour, almost a little orange like an apricot.

Citrus and pine on the nose. Notes of sweet orange and tangerine-like flavours, and maybe some mango. Soft caramel malt throughout. The dry hops add amazing floral and somewhat grassy notes as well.

Tastes much like it smells, and goes down very smooth with little bitterness. Hops are more present than they are on the nose. The malt flavour is much more pronounced and lasts through the end, helping polish off much of the bitterness from the hops and disguising the high ABV.

The body is medium to thick, and has decent carbonation. A slight warming feeling going down is really the only indicator of the alcohol content.

I would be interested to see how this would be with slightly more malts. Had about seven people taste this last night - including a friend who drinks beer like Sam and PBR - and he even enjoyed it if that was any testament to how nearly perfect this beer is.
