Earl (1911-1985) was our grandfather’s brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Stout is crafted from American malted barley, Flaked Oats, English roasted malts, American hops, Organic Guatemalan Coffee, our ale yeast, and water from our well. It is unfiltered and naturally carbonated. A silhouette of coffee and malt - an embodiment of complexity and drinkability, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Earl.

Served in a tulip at 50 degrees. Pours two shades shy of black with a dense, two inch, mocha-colored head embedded with ringlets and pinpricks. Head eventually settles into a fairly consistent 1/8th inch skim with spots and swaths of lacing revealed as the beer recedes. Nose is a bit subdued - I get a hint of smoke and dark malts. Taste is fantastic - roasted coffee, rich chocolate and bitter char. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body (but closer to light) with an even carbonation and a creamy texture. Overall, an exceptional oatmeal stout - abv is a bit high of the style, but it's well-hidden and quite flavorful.

Pour is black with a tight mocha head. Nose is smooth roasted coffee, hint of burnt toffee, with a light vanilla aroma. Taste is more roasty and burnt than the nose, lots of coffee and gets a hint acrid and bitter. Some chocolate malts cling to the back sides of the mouth with notes of vanilla. Body is incredibly soft and creamy with extremely gentle carbonation. Really opens as it warms bringing out more malt depth and richness balancing well with coffee and helping reduce the bitterness.

The beer comes in a black color with a beautiful 1.5 finger fluffy brown head.

The aroma offers brown sugar sweetness, medium roasted coffee, milk chocolate, cocoa, cappuccino, licorice.

The flavor follows with a medium to light roasted coffee with caramel and brown sugar coming through. Then onto a punchier roasted quality and an aggressive bitterness of anise, sambuca, licorice, earthy. The mouthfeel is creamy upfront as it fades onto the bitter finish.

Black body with large white head with great retention and leaves thick lacing on the glass. Nose is coffee bomb, oats, and chocolate. Flavor is exactly the same, but nose is much more impressive and robust. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Creamy and silky body that is slightly thin as it warms up. Everett seems slightly thicker bodied than Earl does. Maybe the coffee thins thing out this stout. Not boozey at all. Really fantastic coffee beer by HF.

Appearance: minimal head, dark brown in color, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: coffee dominates

Taste: big coffee and robust roasted malt with some citrus hops at the end

Mouthfeel: moderate carbonation, medium-heavy bodied, sweet with a bitter finish

Overall: Another Hill Farmstead brew..another beer right at the top of its class. Exceptional for a coffee stout. While this is not my favorite style, the coffee is not too bitter but it is highly present. If I were to reach for a coffee stout, this is where I would go to.

Thanks again to Chris for providing another Hill Farmstead growler.

A - Dark brown beer with a bit of brownish head that left a little bit of lace on the sides.

S - A decent bit of coffee, lots of roast, smells a bit dry actually. Little bit of cocoa and earthy notes.

T - There's a lot of char in this, almost too much. To me it seems a lot like an Irish Dry Stout, or even an Imperial Irish Dry Stout. Some coffee, molasses, but the char kind of kills this one, I'm not a big fan of the taste truthfully.

M - Lower carbonation, medium bodied.

O - Not a huge fan of this beer, it's solid, but not an upper-class brew like I've come to expect from Hill Farmstead. Too much char for me, just didn't care a ton for the flavor profile as much as I thought I would.

A- Black bodied pour from the 500ml to a few pint glasses. One finger light tan head forms and has decent retention. Falls to a small foamy ring leaving spotty lacing all around the glass.

S- Fresh roast coffee off the top above a nice Stout base. Malt complexity is nice and fairly rich. Deep roast grain notes, tons of coffee grounds, toasted nuttiness and even a hint of hops. Nice coffee complexity.

T- Coffee once again takes the show over here. Tons of roasty bean flavor, espresso and just fresh french press coffee. The stout base is mostly roast grains with some nuttiness and toffee feel for me. Hops round it all out with earthy notes.

MF- Moderately thick bodied with fairly high level carbonation. Texture is fairly silky and creamy. Bitterness from the coffee, roast grains and hops lingers on the palate.

Coffee runs the show here but the base stout brings some nice elements as well. Great overall coffee complexity.

A-Black in the glass and while pouring. Two finger brown head that leaves nice lacing.

S-Roasted coffee, oats, vanilla, chocolate and roasted malt.

T-Good deal of coffee, some oats, good deal of vanilla as well. Chocolate as well. Some bitterness.

M-Lighter not much carbonation and somewhat watery.

O-Not a knockout like some other HF beers but Earl is still mighty tasty.

A - Pours black, mocha color head, slight spotty lacing.

S - Slight coffee, roasty malts, toffee, slight cream. A little bit of everything here, which is nice. Wish there was a bit more coffee.

T - Similar to the nose. Slight coffee, roasted beans, malts, some cream. Kind of like a cold cup of coffee.

M - Too thin of a body, slight carbonation, creamy finish.

O - Enjoyable, but the thin body and hints of coffee hurt the overall score of this one. Wishing for more coffee and medium to full body but I guess I can't have everything. Good, not great.

Had this one at the Black Back this past Friday. Apparently this particular keg was extremely foamy and Mr. Hill called Rick (owner of the Black Back) to ask him if he was ok with it....Rick hadn't tapped it prior to him calling so he drew from his experience with the last keg and told him it was fine. Upon tapping and pouring for a day or two he realized that Shaun knew what he was talking about. Rick graciously warned me about the condition of the keg before pouring it and I said I'd be fine with it. He then basically poured me 3 large snifter glasses of foam which eventually receded into 3x 1/3 glasses of beer. A bit of pouring one into the other and viola I had a perfect snifter of brew!

Appearance: Pours (or shall I say settles!) deep dark brown black with a dark brown massive crown. Loads of retention and lace.

Smell: Nice coffee notes over dark malt with caramel and brown sugar notes.

Taste: Same as nose....really nice integration of coffee going on here!

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with loads of carbonation.

Drinkability: Very good!

Another solid HF Brew!

Earl pours black with a moderate sized creamy tan head on top. The foam fades slowly leaving minimal lacing on the glass.

The aroma isn't as strong as I thought it would be. Notes of chocolate and roasted malt dominate. Coffee is present but not very strong. There's also some oatmeal notes in the aroma.

Each sip of this full bodied beer is creamy and smooth with mild carbonation. The flavor is rich with dark flavors of chocolate, roast malt and oatmeal. Some bitter coffee flavor appears in the middle, but it's not very strong. It finishes mildly bitter with some grassy notes. Once gone the roast malt and chocolate lingers on the palate.

This is a very tasty beer with a great mouthfeel. However, I'm not getting a lot of coffee flavor. It is there, but very subtle. My growler was filled 1 week before being served and was chilled the entire time. I don't think the age of my beer made the coffee fade.

On tap at Threepenny Taproom in Montpelier. This was my dessert (after dinner, a Houblon Chouffe, and a Hill Farmstead Edward)

Very dark brown, nearly black in color with a dark beige head that is thick and hangs around for a while. Alas, the loud and annoying middle-aged woman sitting next to me at the bar also stuck around until I was almost done. Puts a damper on the mellowness typically associated with sipping a fine beer in a fine establishment, but I digress...

Smells of roast coffee, with some molasses and chocolate notes.

Taste is heavy with coffee and chocolate, but with very little bitterness. This is one of the smoothest coffee stouts I have ever had. Very nice.

Kind of a medium mouthfeel that is smooth, malty, and almost buttery.

Overall, another hit from Hill Farmstead. I know there is a barrel-aged version of this somewhere - would love to try that too.

Thanks to Kyle for picking this one up for me. 22oz. growler poured into a Brooklyn Brewery snifter. Shared with schen9303.

Pours pitch black with a 1 finger fine mocha head with decent retention. Lacing is stringy and sparse with good stick. Thin oily legs. A good looking beer.

Nose is huge coffee and mocha notes. Like a man made of coffee beans took a crap and it got put in a beer. Incredible. Very aromatic.

Opens chocolate and mocha. Dank coffee beans towards the middle with milk and dark chocolate in the finish. Some fudginess lends a mellow sweetness throughout. Aftertaste of coffee, lactose, and chocolate. Delicious.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Silky and smooth in the mouth and smooth, warm, and silky going down. Messy finish with a lingering aftertaste. Great body and super drinkable. Spot on as always.

Hill Farmstead just can't help but put up winner after winner. Earl is no different. Not the most complex brew but this beer delivers exactly what it intends to. Like smelling and drinking a mocha latte through and through. The body just serves to enhance the experience. One of the best in the style.

Chilled growler into a glass, from a long-ago trade. This is from notes; the growler was consumed fresh.

A: Pours black with edge translucence. Tan head.

S: Smells heavily of coffee, roasted grain, vanilla. The aroma is rounded out by mild wafts of dark chocolate. Earthy hops. It reminded me a little of Velvet Merlin at the time; this was at least a year ago, so maybe the recipe has changed.

T: Roasted coffee beans, roasted malt; they lead the way and set the tone of the beer. The roast is enhanced by the choice of earth hops. It isn't until the finish, which carefully coaxes milk chocolate and vanilla out of the nether, that the beer moves away from the charred flavors into something more balanced.

M: Smooth, silky body; the use of oats is evident, and well-received.

O: I think this is solid, but in this rough area of styles (porter / stout being kind of interchangeable today), I'd give the nod to Twilight of the Idols and Everett in HF's stable.

A: Poured from a growler into a HF glass. Body appears quite thick on the pour, viscous black with a half-finger brown head.

S: Nice malty stout nose, full of chocolate and coffee, with coffee slightly more dominant.

T: Roasted barley malt, chocolatey malt up front. Modest creaminess presumably from the oatmeal. Touch of earthy bitterness and coffee. Nice chocolate finish.

M: Medium-full in heft with good carbonation and a decently creamy feel.

O: Good stuff.

A - Pours a color as black as night with a finger of dense foam that fades quickly to a thin cap and leaving behind sparse lacing on the glass.

S - Some coffee, grassy hops and dark roasted malts. Some alcohol present in the aroma. Overall, the aroma is little on the light side - would enjoy more if there was a bit more intensity.

T - Intense coffee flavor with some sweet creaminess, a bit of malty sweetness, some sweet malt, caramel, green and grassy hops.

M - Thin to medium body. Medium carbonation that is creamy and smooth. A bit sweet overall with a lingering roastiness in the aftertaste.

D - Smooth, coffee roastiness - very tasty. Goes down way too easily. This growler disappeared very quickly.

2L growler to HF stemmed glass.

A- Pours a dark brown that appears pretty much jet black in the glass with about a finger of fairly dark creamy mocha head that has nice retention but slowly recedes to a thin layer leaving light lacing.

S- Roasted malts, rich espresso, dark chocolates, oatmeal cookies. Fairly aromatic with a nice rich pleasant smell like a coffee/oatmeal stout should have.

T- Coffee, roasted malts, bitter dark chocolate, a bit of sweet oatmeal cookies, finishes with bitter chocolate and a rich lingering espresso taste. Chocolate is fairly bitter at first, but smoothens out as the beer warms.

M- Nice full-bodied feel, decent carbonation, very smooth and drinkable.

O- This was a fantastic coffee/oatmeal stout that is exactly what I expected from HF. I could easily drink this for breakfast. It is a little bit on the rich side, but other then that it is very easy to drink. I highly recommend trying this, definitely one of the better oatmeal stouts I've had.

Appearance: It has a nice jet black color to it. It has a nice thick creamy tan head that dies down slowly and leaves nice lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of roasted coffee, rich roasted malts, chocolate, some oats and faint vanilla.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a loads of roasted malts, coffee, an espresso bitterness, some chocolate, oats and very faint vanilla.

Mouthfeel: It has a low carbonation with a very nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by great flavors and aromas. Shaun Hill truly is a world class brewer.

A: Pours black, medium thickness, with a half finger of attractive, light brown head. Very good retention and some dots and streaks of lacing.

S: Medium-roast coffee, caramel, light roasted malt. Delicate aroma.

T: Roasted malt is more in the forefront, with coffee taking more of a backseat, finishing with some bright acidity.

M: Creamy medium body and medium-light carbonation. A little watery.

O: Overall, a tasty, well crafted coffee stout. Highly drinkable, though a tad one dimensional.

A - Deep black with no light and a small tan head. Pours like motor oil.

S - Firm but nice coffee with roasted malt notes and hints of cocoa.

T - Bold coffee flavors with subtler roasted malt flavors. Mostly dry but hints of sweetness. Great from start to finish. I might dial back the coffee a bit but it works.

M - Super creamy texture yet light and airy from the fine carbonation.

O - Very flavorful. Very good.

500ml bottle bought at the brewery a few weeks ago. Bottled 12-2013.

Black beer, dark brown head. A thick ring remains after some time.

Coffee and chocolate seem to lead the way for the scent, with roasted and vanilla backing. Good and bold, pretty straight forward oatmeal stout.

Taste is a slight improvement, some more complexities here. Some extra roasted malt/char presence here which feels slightly astringent at times, coffee still comes out in front though. Chocolate malts, caramel, oats, nutty malts, light vanilla and some hop presence make up the rest.

Smooth, somewhat heavy feel, very 'oatmeal stout'. Carbonation is spot-on.

Good, doesn't blow me away though. The astringency in the taste is a noticeable bother at first, but does seem to almost completely fade with time.

Black body with a big deep brown head almost like a nitro pour from the bottle. Nice light roast on the nose with hints of chocolate and maybe even some maple. Body is right there for an oatmeal stout if not hinting slightly toward a Belgian dry stout. Flavor is very nice and comforting. Coffee balanced with chocolate. Easy drinking for a stout and delivers what it says it will.

Appearance: Near black with some dark brown at the edges when held to direct light. Head is super creamy and dense to start. Head is a medium tan leaning to dark. Drops to a small smooth collar with a few clumps of creamy cap. Moderate carbonation on the pour accompanying a moderately viscous pour. Minimal lacing.

Smell: Super roasted. Roast adds a soft touch of almost burnt malt. Coffee laced throughout. Some small hins of dark fruit. Tons of chocolate and cocoa. Mostly dark chocolate with some baker's cocoa thrown in for good measure. Slightly sweet. A touch of almost soy and meat in there as well...more like a well seasoned grill. A soft hint of citrus from the hops. A touch of rock coupled with some straw. Minerals. Chocolate malt in abundance. A mild hint of oats buried in the back. A slight hint of char and smoke.

Taste: Chocolate malt on steroids. Super chocolaty. Milk chocolate gives way to bitter baker's chocolate and nibs. Super dark chocolate. Oats add a bit of dimension. Small hint of citrus ghosting over the top, but it's very quickly crushed by the assertive malt base. Some generic dark fruit pushes through each sip. Fresh tobacco and a ton of coffee bean. Slightly smoky with a slight hint of grilled meat. Fresh roasted coffee bean. Slight minerality in the back as well. Sweet without crossing in to sugary or cloying. Some husky grain. Warming ups the hoppy backbone throwing a soft floral edge. Ends up a little harsh as it warms jumping the bitter cocoa and deep roasted notes to a distracting and obfuscating level.

Mouthfeel: Creamy medium body with a moderate carbonation. Super smooth, but the carbonation livens it up just a touch. Slight astringency.

Overall: Yet another guy you want around all the time.

It's definitely American. Hoppy and creamy and delicious. Everything blends. Drinks bigger than it actually is and will probably age for 2-3 years with grace.

Pours a very nice super dark brown to almost black with a very thick and creamy dark brown fine head. Nose is sweet, coffee, malt, brown sugar, caramel.

Taste is just like the nose, coffee, chocolate, lotsa brown suga, it's a bit sharp and crisp. Really a good beer with a nice warm and thick mouthfeel. It's got a nice rich mouthfeel that's very tasty.
