Notes/Commercial Description:
Arthur (1922-2005) was our grandfather’s youngest brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Saison is crafted from American malted barley, American and European hops, our distinctive farmhouse yeast and water from our well. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Arthur.

Facesnorth tossing me some more Hill Farmstead! Thanks a bunch, Ryan! Arthur is pale, the goldest of straw golden. A tinge of haze runs through the body while aggressive streams of carbonation rush to the instantly frothy head of pure white. The foam grows to two fingers on the pour, settles at one, and leaves chunky drink lines down the glass. She's purty!

The nose is subtle but complex. There's a surprising amount of spice present, most notably cardamom, but also coriander. Orchard fruits make their presence known, vibrant peach and leathery dried apricot add a ton of depth, both are musty. An undercurrent of wildflowers add comfort. This beer smells like walking over the grounds of an old abandoned farmhouse; earth, flowers growing wild, grasses, even old wood though faint. I'm a fan.

Impressive! The flavor profile is bursting with vibrant fruitiness. The peaches and apricots are flat out juicy, growing in intensity from start to finish. A touch of wildflower mustiness flashes through the middle while a slightly sweet, pale maltiness accentuates the stone fruit. The spice isn't as bold as the aroma suggested but does add depth on the finish, cardamom and coriander again along with minor wood. The flavor is great but one minor complaint is that it flashes through too quickly and disappears. I'd like the juiciness to linger a touch longer.

Active carbonation adds frothiness to the moderately-light body which works well for the style. The bubbles add some prickliness along the tongue and while the finish isn't dry off the bat it slowly becomes so. A soft bitterness lingers. Drinkability is off the charts.

No bells and whistles here folks and none are needed. Arthur is a tremendously well made American saison with all the qualities of the best. Rustic is a good descriptor. It's very outdoorsy with the spiciness, floral and orchard qualities, and soft woodiness. Hill Farmstead nailed this guy! Thanks again, Ryan!
