Notes/Commercial Description:
Arthur (1922-2005) was our grandfather’s youngest brother; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his 13 siblings. In his honor, this Saison is crafted from American malted barley, American and European hops, our distinctive farmhouse yeast and water from our well. Unfiltered and naturally carbonated, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Arthur.

750ml bottle, split, immediately post-Clara

Pale straw-golden beer, thick frothy white head. Crisp, light and refreshing citrus notes, white pepper, a touch earthy and light spice. Another infinitely drinkable and refreshing saison from HF - I prefered Clara to this during this session, but either one would do the trick on a summer afternoon.

Terrific saison. Aroma is tantalizing with a fruit invitation. Cloudy yellow. Understated carbonation allowing for the palate to appreciate the tanginess. Some lace. Slightly pickled lemon taste and that's a good thing. Very good drinkability. Lots of farmhouse in the end of the bottle.

Bottled April 27, 2013. Getting around to tasting this one a bit later.

(4.25) A: Hazy straw coloured with a tall puffy head that gradually recedes while clinging nicely to the glass.

(4.25) S: Straw, cloves, tart grapefruit, sour lemon, white grape, pepper, and sea salt-like. A lot of diverse barnyard aromas that are tart and slightly acidic – Outstanding.

(4.25) T: Lemons, semi-sweet grapefruit, white grape, straw-like qualities, spices, and dry cedar. This is tough to accurately describe with the variety of flavours in this, so I won’t attempt to – it’s delicious.

(4.5) M: Medium bodied with a lively carbonation. Pleasantly dry with a well balanced slick/crisp texture.

(4.25) D: Excellent farmhouse saison. The trip to the brewery is well worth it for their offerings, and worth it alone to pick up more of this.

From Brad. Thanks! Split. Reviewed from notes.

A: Pours out as a yellow-lemon sun with an energetic and expanding white head. Great head retention.

N: Lemon zest and pine/cedar. Forest floors, dried leaves, and log cabins. Lavender and coriander seeds. Green apple. Have to give this one high marks; I really enjoy it.

T: Slightly soured with some bitterness and very little malt. Clean taste for the most part, but then I get a hint of sharp, stomach acid which I really can't stand.

M: dry and pleasing. The beer fills the palate, and then it disappears.

O: This is really nice, but I really wish it didn't have that stomach acid effect because it's a huge turnoff for me. If not for that one flaw, this might be my perfect beer.

Thanks to kmurray8621 for the bottle. Been meaning to drink this one for a little while. Tasted 17 May 2013, reviewed from notes.

Pours mostly clear, medium-pale straw yellow. Three fingers of big, fluffy head that looks like closed-cell foam. Great retention and fantastic lacing, leaving etchings on the glass and a thick cap on the surface of the beer.

Smell is a really nice mix of earthy, musty smells and a little bit of spice. Earthy and deep, yet airy and light at the same time.

Taste is earthy and musty, again with a bit of spice. But here there's a citric acid bitterness that I really like. Just a shade of citrus combined with that little acidic almost-sour burst. Goes through three distinct stages: earthy, then spice, then citrusy bitter.

Feel is medium-bodied, watery-light, with a prickly carbonation that lightens the earthy sense and works well with the spice.

In the lower end of the upper tier of saisons. Musty and earthy. Not stunning, but very good.
