500ml bottle out of my Stone glass.

A- A deep pitch black, quite dark for a porter. Pours with a dark tan/coffee colored head, that quickly reduces to a light froth. Light lacing.

S- Nice roasty malts, and a touch of smokiness. I get a little bit of coffee, and some acidity and spice. Some creamy chocolate notes as well.

T- Smooth and creamy as it enters my mouth, which transitions to a nice robust coffee porter. The vanilla and spices are also evident, but I would argue it could take even more vanilla. The aftertaste is a roasted malt flavor with a hint of smokiness. I also get what tastes like cinnamon and perhaps some nutmeg that lingers in my mouth.

M- As with every Hill Farmstead beer it is perfect. Not one complaint.

O- Overall, this is an extremely nice spiced coffee porter. I hate smokey beers, but this has just the right touch of smokiness to compliment the roasted malt character. It reminds me of Victory at Sea, but has a much different spin on it. It's highlights are really the malt and spices, with the vanilla and coffee somewhat taking a back seat.

500 ml bottle served in a CBS snifter. Fall/Winter 2012 vintage. Big thanks to Ivoutlawjlh for the extra. Thanks Jeremy!

A: Pours a nice obsidian color, very opaque, with a tan head forming on the pour. It recedes slowly to a thick ring and a small wispy film. Sheets of lace are left down the glass.

S: Roasty malts and cinnamon are present up front. Baker chocolate with a light vanilla bean that lingers around in the background. Some coffee cake sweetness as well.

T: Finely roasted malts, some coffee bean, and light cinnamon all up front. Toffee malts, some sweet crumb cake and with a little nuttiness on the finish.

M: Dry and roasted with a medium plus body. Medium carbonation. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel.

O: This was another excellent porter from HF. While enjoy Everett more, this was still a big winner in my book. Nicely hidden ABV and greatly nuanced flavors. Definitely recommend.

poured into a Cascade snifter/tulip hybrid glass.

Appearance: black bodied beer with thinn brown head.

Smell: light roast notes, chocolates, cinnamon, coffee, vanilla. The nose is very balanced.

Taste: Chocolate and mellow sweetness from the vanilla. Nice coffee note thats not overly roasty. Cinnamon on the back end of the beer. The cinnamon note seem to become stronger as the beer warms. Pretty awesome balance in this beer as noticed in the nose.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. It got a little bit of silkiness to the beer as well. Its a bit thinner than Everett and I wish this beer had the same mouthfeel as everett.

Overall: Really awesome beer! As usual HF delivers another beer worth your time. Recomended!

Pours a solid dark brown/black color with a creamy mocha head that persists forever leaving lots of lace on the way down the glass. Smells of chocolate and a hint of roast and coffee with a solid shot of vanilla, a touch of ash and earthy hops. The flavor is rich chocolate, caramel and coffee up front with again a bit of vanilla contrast. Sweet flavor with little to no hop flavor or bitterness. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a creamy velvety smooth mouthfeel. I tried this on tap this weekend and thought the vanilla was a bit too forward, but trying this bottle its seems just right to me. This is a really nice porter, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Big thanks to Dat for looking out on a recent trip to the brewery. enjoyed from a HF wine glass.

a - brew pours an 8 ball black into the glass with some visible tan carbonation jumping to the surface. brew initially poured with a finger plus of rich creamy head but that quickly dissipated to a thin skin of off light tan bubbles. lacing was streaky in large chunks of mini bubbles.

s - really nice roast with a very appropriately balanced amount of baker's chocolate and coffee notes. some vanilla and milky creaminess coats the scent giving it an almost milk stout or sweet stout vibe. not much char that i would expect, but smells pretty outrageous.

t - coffee crossed with chocolate and then roasted. subtle bitterness on the finish. the chocolate is fairly heavy giving this a rich blast of dessert porter flavors.

m - the feel jumped out at me first when i took my initial sip as the char that was missing from the nose is definitely present on the feel, and dialed in at an appropriate amount to give it a porter vibe but not being too burnt.

o - overall, very nice porter. a bit decadent and rich for the style, but enjoyable none-the-less. something in that Hill Farmstead water, i tell ya.

Appearance is dark brown with barely any head.
Nose is dark bitter chocolate, earthy hop character in the middle with a little bit of of vanilla at the back. The coffee is present on the nose but much tamer than I would expect for a coffee porter. The taste features a stronger presence of vanilla, chocolate, a touch of cinnamon on the back. Very nice. Overall, tons of flavor and decent balance, coffee is more backseat than I expected.

Dark brown body with a light mocha cap. Minimal lacing.

First whiff is coffee, vanilla beans after a couple swirls.

Coffee dominates for me but there is a hint of vanilla. Roasty yeah stuff. 7.5%abv is about what it feels like.

Super smooth. Medium low carbonation, medium mouthfeel.

Very good and I can see where the hype lies. Thanks egrace84!

500ml bottle purchased at the brewery. Poured into HF glass, served slightly below cellar temperature.

A- Pours a dark jet black with about a finger's worth of light mocha creamy head that has decent retention but fades to a very thin layer and leaves some spotty lacing. Nice consistent carbonation.

S- Coffee, vanilla, cinnamon, a tiny bit of nutmeg, nice aroma strength. Aromas are extremely well balanced with the coffee and cinnamon blending very well together and neither dominating.

T- Light coffee with creamy vanilla and a hint of subtle cinnamon on the finish. Very well balanced and nice level of spices without anything that dominates too much. Very flavorful.

M- Medium bodied, pretty average body for a porter, nice carbonation for a porter, very easy to drink.

O- This was another fantastic porter from Hill Farmstead. Twilight was very flavorful and extremely well balanced. In my opinion the subtle spices and vanilla were perfect in this beer and it was very easy to drink. Overall I like the chocolate and coffee that come out a little bit more in Everett (the vanilla takes a little bit of that away), but this is also a fantastic porter that I'm glad they are making a regular seasonal offering. I definitely recommend trying it out.

Presentation: 500 mL bottle chilled and poured into my Dogfish Head tulip glass. Picked up from the brewery today.

Appearance: Obviously, near pitch black in color. Doesn't pour a really aggressive head, but the beige head does recede into a nice lacing around the glass.

Aroma: Coffee and chocolate notes really stand out in the aroma. After the initial burst of roasty, porter notes, there is definitely a nice vanilla presence. The vanilla is definitely there but not overdone at all. Some nice cinnamon also peeks through.

Taste: Really nice fresh coffee and milk chocolate notes. Really nice combination of coffee bitterness and sweetness from the chocolate and caramel of the malts. The vanilla is not too strong, but compliments the other flavors very well. Some light cinnamon notes as well. Very complex and extremely drinkable and most importantly, tasty.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with average/low carbonation for the style. Warming throughout.

Overall, probably my favorite non-barrel aged porter ever. Incredibly drinkable and complex. All the additions to this beer (coffee, vanilla, cinnamon) work well together and complement each other. Nothing is too heavy handed and it makes for an incredible porter. Having this released during the winter season was also a great choice as it drinks great in the cold weather.

Huge thanks to jedwards for sending this my way. He's been talking it up for a year now and I just missed it when I was at HF in 1/12. 2012 Fall release, 500ml bottle. Poured at cellar temp into a HF tulip.

A - Pours a translucent brownish-black with a thick, creamy off-white head. Great, full lacing remains. It really looks great for a Porter.

S - Dark malts, smooth and mild coffee, hints of sweet vanilla in the back.

T - Much like the aroma. Malts, mild coffee, vanilla. The coffee is a main flavor, but it seems to come from a mild blend. The vanilla give a good sweetness to the flavor and keeps the bitterness from the coffee away. There is a great balance.

M - Medium body, expected for a Porter.

O - This is a fantastic Porter. It falls short of Birth of Tragedy, but that's to be expected. I can't think of another better Porter that I've had. Overall balance, great but not overwhelming flavors. This is everything I wish all Porters could be.

Thanks go to BA Deuane for sharing this growler over the weekend. I got to have several pours into a snifter. The brew appears black in color with thick mocha colored head. The cap fades slowly producing a full wall of lace. A light swirl revives a finger back to the surface.

The smell is pretty strong with vanilla beans. Almost a sticky feeling to the nostrils before the onset of roasty coffee, charred grain, earthen elements and then citrus hops. Across the back as this brew warms up, it is somewhat reminescent of an oyster stout with its mineral inclusion and roasty elements.

The flavor is super roasty with dark kilned grain and an accenting bitterness of citrus bitter coffee coupled with herbal hops. A pronounced sticky vanilla bean flavor and sweetness persists though the middle of this brews flavor profile. The finish goes back to a bit of that previous mentioned oyster stout feel with plenty of mineral character somewhat earthen and reminescent of cinnamon bark.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It is smooth and easy drinking with lots of pleasant roasty stout quality contrasted by sticky sweet vanilla bean addition. I had no problems finishing my glass and reaching for more. My only complaint is the mineral aspect thy seemed a bit out of place.

Bottle thanks to ilovevermont, poured into a HF stem.

Pour: Completely pitch black with the slightest dark brown edges to the glass. This glass is completely black. A finger and a half of khaki white head forms, that sticks around nicely and leaves solid lacing.

Smell: Dark roasted chocolate, with a significant coffee presence. A light smokiness, followed by some vanilla, but only just.

Taste: Really nice clean dark chocolate. Roasted coffee beans are present throughout, and provide a nice bitterness. Sweet milk chocolate then comes which mellows out any harshness from coffee bitterness. Finishes with an ever so slight touch of cinnamon.

Mouthfeel: Holy amazing. Super velvety and creamy. This beer is amazingly drinkable, yet decadent to savor. Nailed the mouthfeel with this one.

Overall: Another incredible beer from Shaun Hill. Not sure if I prefer this over Everett or not. For now I'll say "yes."

Fall/Winter 2012 vintage. 500ml bottle into a tulip glass. The HF website lists this beer as being brewed with coffee and cinnamon, but the ingredient lists and description on the label has no mention of cinnamon. Recipe change perhaps?

A - Pours a very dark black body. Holding it up to the light lets just a bit shine through to show a very dark brown color. Dense and creamy two finger mocha head forms and dissipates rather slowly into a thin cap with thick edging. Lacing and retention is just insane on this beer. Super sticky and clinging foam.

S - Roasty and smoky with intense espresso beans and rich vanilla. Finish is of sweet milk chocolate and a touch of spice. Excellent aroma, very dark and roasty.

T - Roasted malts lead into a strong vanilla presence. Notes of coffee and sweet milk chocolate intertwine. The intense roastiness of the beer is cut by an almost syrup like level of sweetness. Extremely decadent and delicious but slightly cloying.

M - Creamy and silky with a perfect level of carbonation. Swishing the beer in your mouth causes it to instantly froth up. It finishes surprisingly dry which helps with the intense syrupy sweetness of the beer. The mouthfeel is just perfect here.

O - An exceedingly complex and intense porter. I assume Everett is the base beer due to matching abv's. I do prefer Everett in that its much simpler and basic while perfecting all the qualities that make a world class porter. The addition of ingredients seems to make a great thing a bit less great. Still a world class porter that is exceedingly enjoyable on a cold ass night.

Poured from a growler into a HF tulip.

Pours pretty typical for the style. Very dark, virtually black. Mocha colored head rests nicely on top.

Smell is very roasty. I can catch a hint of bitter chocoalte as well.

Taste is in line with the smell. It's very roasty up front along with a little bitterness.

Considering the smell and color, I would've expected this to be much heavier and thick. It isn't a light beer, but it's certainly not heavy. It's really a smooth beer.

Not my favorite of styles, but I enjoyed this.

The beer is dark brown with a quarter inch of beige head. The aroma is roasty, with a touch of spice. Vanilla presence hits immediately upon the first sip. While vanilla presence is muted in the aroma, it is rather assertive in the flavor. Smooth, silky feel with lingering vanilla, chocolate. Delicious. Another fabulous beer from Hill Farmstead.

Beer pours black with a thin off-white head. Smell is really excellent - roasted malts, coffee and some spice all come together quite nicely. Flavor follows the nose, it has that same awesome porter flavor as Everett, but adds some coffee and spice to the mix, really impressive. Sadly I'm not getting much vanilla, but I can deal. Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with nice carbonation. Overall, this is yet another fantastic beer from Hill Farmstead.

Another nice beer shared by Matt, starrdogg.

It pours a really nice black to dark brown color with a nice tan ring of head and some great lacing left with a swirl. The smell is a great melange of the added flavors of coffee, vanilla bean, and the some kind of astringent malts. The coffee isn't a great quality coffee, almost like a instant coffee almost, and has some spicy notes to it. The taste is very nice with a great vanilla bean flavor added to the coffee flavor and nice malty porter base. Taste pops nicely. The feel is ok, kind of drier than I like in a porter with additions like this and medium in body. Overall a good beer but I don't love it as much as others at the tasting did.

Edit: had this same batch tonight, and the smell is significantly better, maybe with some age the coffee mellows out and everything seems to coalesce very nicely with a bit of age, a nice roasty solid example of a porter aroma. It was noted that the alcohol level is perfect for a chocolate coffee vanilla porter, it's also very nice in subtlety. The feel also seems silkier than last time. Nice! Thanks to Andrew MacWilliams for the bottle!

Yup, it's black alright. Bit of tan head sits on top but fades kind of quickly. Quite a strong vanilla note to start things off, some cinnamon and a nice solid porter to back it all up. Some chocolate aromas and a healthy dose of coffee roasting going on.

Really digging what the vanilla bean and cinnamon have done with this porter. The vanilla is more prominent here than I expected given other vanilla bean aged porters I've had. Cinnamon naturally pairs really well with these flavors and it's a shame you don't see more spiced beers go as dark as this (too many generic winter warmers seem to be boring amber ales with spices added). Anyone that's had Everett knows that HF makes a mean porter so naturally the base beer in this holds up really well. Not as roasty and robust as Everett but I think that gives the other flavors a better chance to shine.

Full-bodied and creamy mouthfeel. Really, this might just be the perfect winter beer.

Mac comes through with the pre-hurricane growler! What better way to ride out Hurricane Sandy than with a fresh growler from Hill Farmstead?

Deep brown body, nearly opaque. Fluffy dark tan head, excellent retention and lace, all of which are par for the course for a Hill Farmstead brew.

Aroma is exceedingly dry, and yields only a hint of cinnamon. Other than that, it smells like a regular robust porter without extra ingredients. Surprisingly minimal roast and spices here; this isn't what I expect from HF.

Fortunately, everything shows up on my palate. Predominantly roasty malt layered with smooth vanilla, leaving a lingering cinnamon flavor in the back of my throat. Coffee is the weakest of the flavors, and I'd like a more coffee-forward profile here.

Pretty sure I prefer Everett to Twilight of the Idols as it stands. I like this combination of flavors moreso in theory than in this particular beer. Perhaps the next batch will be better?

Chilled growler into a glass. I think this was shared by nickd717. From long-ago notes.

A: The growler was a bit cold, so the beer (black body) initially poured flat and eventually generated a tan head that lasted briefly before receding into a thin collar. No lace.

S: This is more chocolate-forward than Everett (which to me is primarily roasty). Vanilla, coffee, roasted grain, and some smoke are noted.

T: Again, chocolate-forward, but roasted grain is stronger here than the nose implied it would be. Coffee and vanilla are also weaker than the nose implied. There is a nice spice kick (cinnamon?); that and a nutty molasses flavor give the beer a wintry feel.

M: Medium-bodied, with low-medium carbonation. It has a little lingering stickiness, but it's not oily.

O: An outstanding porter. I think Everett takes the cake for me, but this is a fine entry in Hill Farmstead's recipe book...

EDIT: In retrospect, uploading this review maybe 2 years later, I realized that this must have been the base beer for Birth of Tragedy. Nice. No wonder that beer turned out to be so exceptional.

A: super dark brown, just about black with a nice finger of creamy mocha head, this looks delicious. The head recedes nicley, not much lacing though.

S: I get sweet milk chocolate, with a touch of dark fruit. first off, then coffee with a bit of creamy vanilla, then as the beer warms I begin to notice the cinnamon giving a vague cinnamon teddy graham note.... A touch of alcohol a well. Loving the aroma, particuarly as it warms.

T: milk chocolate coffe and vanill, reminds me of chocolate milk but mocha, the cinnamon comes in a touch on the end.... Sadly I do not get the teddy Graham's I gt in the nose....

M: heavy medium body with lower carbonation... Mouthfeel is slick and velvety with a dry finish. Very full bodied for a 7.5 abv.

O: a really good porter, don't really know what else to say... A touch of sweetness to it for the style and a hint of dark fruit, but overall deffinatly try this if you get the chance.

A-Looks like chocolate milk right after a violent stir from a spoon. Milk chocolate color with a cluster of large bubbles atop the body. Completely opaque.

S-Nose is not incredibly intense but it displays a perfectly crafted aroma of coffee with cream. Mocha aroma along with some French vanilla. Smells creamy.

T-The flavor is very roasty and delicious. Espresso beans along with both milk and dark chocolate. Bitter coffee notes are balanced by a lactic milky taste. A robustly flavored Porter.

M-Feels like a Stout. Pretty viscous. Full bodied. Carbonation is very soft. Oily and creamy.

O/D-Awesome. Such a treat to try. One of the more imbibable dark brews I have had. Creamed coffee in beer form. Very happy. This brewery cannot do wrong!

A: Black body with a small dark khaki head that quickly faded into a thin layer of film around the side of the glass.

S: Roasted coffee and bitter chocolate

T: A combination of strong coffee and roasted malts dominate the front of the palate. Faint notes of vanilla and cinnamon begin to emerge towards the middle of the mouth. The beer has a nice bitter chocolate finish. Excellent porter.

M: Lightly carbonated. Silky mouthfeel.

O: As previously stated this is an excellent porter. Definitely one of the best I have had to date.

S - Nice scent of chocolate, coffee, and rown sugar.

T - Hearty, robust porter with plenty of flavor. Malt tastes a bit more like an english porter, but the chocolate and coffee flavors are up front and consistent.

M - This one is very smooth for a hearty porter. Feels lighter than you would think.

O - Liked this one alot. Great example of a porter that could pass for a hearty stout.

A: Beautiful chocolate brown body with a dark brown head.

S: Nose is deep, dark, rich chocolate malt. Just scrumptious.

T: Flavor is smooth and rich chocolate with a noticeable spice contribution. Molasses, pumpkin pie, cinammon. Truly a wonderful sipper.

M: Slick and smooth. Even leaves a smooth residue.

O: Very nice porter. I'm sure I didn't get all of the complexity that is in there, but I really enjoyed this brew. One of my favorite porters ever.
