Tried blind alongside fresh Everett with some friends. We all agreed that the barrel aged version was sweeter (esp. caramel and toffee), had more coffee/chocolate notes (a bit on the roasty/herbal hop side), and some okay bourbon. Everett isn't a particular favorite of mine, and neither was this -- but still quite tasty!

Amazing bourbon barrel / character from this beer. Shows what you can do barrel-wise something that isn't chewy thick and has a little bit lower ABV.

2020 vintage. Dark in appearance. Coffee on the nose. I really enjoyed the taste of this one. Roasty, a tad bit of smoke, everything you could ask for. Excellent mouthfeel that left you satisfied and wanting another sip. Compared to Damon I have to say, this is right on par. Glad I still have another one of these!

Vintage 2020- poured into Hill Farmstead wine stem.

Drank barrel aged Everett along side the latest canning of Everett for comparison of what time in the barrel does.

Appearance: black body with medium brown head that pours a large head. Nice lacing found on the glass. Head eventually drops to a thick ring around the glass.

Smell: nothing is popping out as prominent as far as aromas coming from this beer. Milk chocolate, roasted malts, and whiskey barrel notes. It smells inviting and delicious. Anticipation is high based on the smell.

Taste: roast malts, cocoa powder, and a hint of smoke. Oak, vanilla, tobacco, and whiskey. Stellar balancing of flavors between the barrel aging notes and base beer Everett. As elegant as I imagined.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied porter with low but adequate carbonation. Smooth with no boozy barrel heat found here. Appropriate heft in the beer. Its not thin, but its right where you would expect a barrel aged porter to be regarding the beer's body. Not quite silky or creamy, but it's in the ball park for those descriptors. Its got great really texture for sure. Very easy to drink as well.

Overall: I have looked forward to trying this barrel aged porter for a long time. Incredibly well balanced barrel aged porter. It's easy to take down a 500ml bottle yourself. No surprise here that this beer will uphold the upstanding reputation of Hill Farmstead beers. Hill farmstead dark beers in a barrel go for complexity, balance, & nuance over huge massive flavors. Everett is the best porter ever... barrel aged Everett is not necessarily an improvement on Everett, but does add a little more nuance and texture to an already undisputed champ in the beer style of Porter. There is also a little added sweetness with less roast noted to barrel aged Everett compared to Everett. No disappointment to be had when drinking barrel aged Everett.

L: Black with a thick brown head that lasts forever and leaves behind a thick wall of lacing.

S:. Dominated by barrel notes of bourbon, toasted coconut, oak, sherry, and vanilla. Behind that there is some coffee and chocolate as well as a little caramel.

T: Rich bourbony chocolate, coconut, vanilla, and sherry. The bitterness is firm but short lived and the finish is sweet and pleasantly roasty.

F: Full bodied and so creamy that I just let this beer sit in my mouth for ages.

Overall: While I honestly prefer the standard Everett, this is still easily one of the best dark ales of any style I have ever tried. The complexity and smoothness is unparalleled.

Long awaited tick. Dark black body, brown head, fairly standard with slight legs. Deep chocolate, cocoa and roast. Mild espresso, sweet whiskey and a mild warming presence on the finish. Very complex with a lot going on that isn't too sweet or bitter. Mild earthy bitterness tempered by wet oak and mild vanillin, even a touch of dark fruit. Medium fuller bodied, not thick, but not thin either. Similar mouthfeel to the base Everett.

Had both the '14 and '18 vintage side by side. The '14 vintage had gone straight to cardboard/sour fruit/red wine land, so this review only concerns the nearly perfect '18 vintage.

This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This smells like chocolate brownies, espresso, roast, bourbon, oak, vanilla, and cookie dough.

The taste is dynamite. It's so smooth, creamy, and with no hint of booze at all. I was worried since it was a porter, and under 10%, that the barrel might overpower the base Everett. Luckily, none of those fears came true. It's brownie batter, chocolate-covered espresso, and vanilla cream all the way through. There's a touch of bourbon, and some slight spicy oak that melds well with Everett's elegant roast character. It's like the best chocolate truffle you've ever had, in liquid form. The barrel-aging really transforms Everett, which is a world-class beer to begin with.

This is medium bodied, silky, and so creamy, with no booziness, and a light and soft amount of carbonation. There's a lot of drinkability here.

This is god-tier. This is absolutely up there with some of HF's best BA dark beers such as Birth of Tragedy or Genealogy of Morals.
